...Individual Leadership "A leader is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal" (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 45). An effective leader must possess qualities of honesty, integrity, equality, and can communicate and listen. Other qualities of a leader include the ability to motivate, lead, promote quality performance, and guide toward a common goal while maintaining individual and group satisfaction. Management and leadership roles overlap and frequently used interchangeably, however they are different in that a manager may not be a leader, and a leader may not be in a managerial position. My personal view of leadership is that leadership is ingrained or inherited in a person as well as a learned trait. Gilbert (1975) found that potential leaders were more likely to have inherited traits such as ambition, poise, self-confidence, orderly thinking, sensitivity, flexibility, and dominance. Although the behavioral theorist believes that a leader's personal traits provide only the foundation, leaders develop through "education, training, and life experiences" (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 45). My personal view is that a leader has qualities of both trait and behavioral theories. Positive leadership is vital in every goal-oriented setting, and positive leadership results in positive results. Positive leaders possess good morals, interpersonal skills, assertiveness not aggressiveness, patience, discipline, confidence, and...

...Individual Leadership Styles Nursing leaders and their style of leadership can be the determining factor in the success of a hospital. For a leader to be successful they must find ways to motivate their staff to work at their highest potential and work toward the goals and vision of the hospital. There are many different leadership styles that produce various responses from employees. I have chosen to compare the transactional and the transformational styles of leadership. The transactional leadership model is simply a reward for performance philosophy. If the work is done well the employee receives a reward and if the work is not done well the employee is punished or suffers consequences (Curtis & O’Connell, 2011). I can see parts of this philosophy used in my work setting. For example when the hospital is experiencing a staffing shortage they offer a bonus for those who sign up to work extra shifts. They believe that the monetary bonus will entice staff to sign up for extra shifts to fill the staffing needs. The thought is that people do what you want them to do if you reward them. If work is not completed as it should be workers can either be suspended or written up. The transformational leadership style puts the emphasis on motivation. It is based on the principle that if the employee is excited about the goal or vision of the organization that they will perform at a higher standard to achieve the common goal. This style encourages more interaction (Curtis & O’Connell)...

Through the years I have gained a deeper understanding of my personal strengths, my own set of values, the morals that guide me, and the person that I am. Each of these facets have continued on a forward path of evolution as I survive trials and tribulations, live through personal and professional experiences, and ingest new opportunities. This set of traits that makes up the person I am is reflected in the way I lead others and the perceptions that others have of my leadership skills. In this research paper I have attempted to gain a deeper understanding of my skills in leadership through deep personal reflection as a result of my peers and managers feedback, and the materials learned throughout my organizational leadership course. I also take a look into the traits and practices that I find to be the most beneficial and desirable...

...Individual Leadership Analytical Paper November 25, 2014 Abstract In order for a leader to be effective they must balance their approach to leadership. A leader cannot focus solely on the development of subordinates at the expense of the organization’s goals, and they cannot focus solely upon the organization while neglecting the people within it. In this paper I examine the leadership of one of my previous superiors to attempt to determine if his approach was effective, and why or why not. Introduction Leadership within the United States army is primarily focused upon accomplishment of the organization’s mission. That mission is to fight and win the nation’s wars (U.S. Army). There are many other areas of focus which support the primary mission. Leaders must ensure their subordinate’s well-being, as a sick soldier cannot fight. Leaders must develop their subordinates, as the United States army has been around since the founding of the country and will still be there when the leader is gone. The next generation of leaders must be prepared to take over and continue the army’s mission. Leaders must instill confidence in their subordinates. One area of focus which can sometimes be forgotten at lower levels is the appearance of soldiers. When soldiers look professional, fit, well-equipped, and prepared they inspire confidence in the civilian population. Americans, and others, view professional appearing soldiers as more competent and thus respect them more. ...

Contingent Leaders, a model to follow? 7. Conclusion Introduction This report reviews and examines the theories behind leadership; identifying and analysing the concept of leadership and leaders from an analytical perspective. Some of the key points will focus on areas I have particular disputes with. Areas such as: • What is leadership? • Who is a leader? • Key Theories of Leadership • The Charismatic Leaders and their leadership • Contingent Leaders, a model to follow? These are the key points I will address in this report taking an analytical perspective into the idea of a leader being thought of as caring and developing followers. 2 WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? I believe the actual concept of leadership is intangible; this is due to the reliance on the members of the group the “Leader” has to try and influence to reach its target goal. Therefore Leadership is commonly defined as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts towards goal setting and goal achievement (Buchanan and Huczynski. 1985, 2010). Leadership appears to be a critical ingredient in effectiveness; a process of social persuasion in which one can enlist the aid and support...

...Types of Power Which type of power do you find most effective? Which type of power do you think you have? Do you use it? If so, in what situations? How could you improve your leadership and management skills now that you have a better understanding of the types of power and how they are applied? Remember to always add the "whys" with the "whats." I believe that most of these different types of power can be effective given the situation in which they are used. If I were to choose which of these I would find the most effective in a general setting I would choose charisma power. The reason I would choose charisma power is because of the effect it has on large groups of people. A good example of this would be Obama’s speeches and how his charisma got nearly the entire nation behind him during his first run for presidency. Thinking about the different types of power, I would probably say that I have a rational type of power. I use rational power during normal social settings on a regular basis. Normally when I am at work I use my reasoning and problem-solving skills to influence the situation. Let’s say that me and some of my co-workers have been given an assignment and told we need to have it done by a specific time. One of the co-workers are convinced that we should do it a specific way, but I noticed a problem with the way in which they want to do the assignment. I will approach my co-worker and in the most respective way that I can I will explain to them the flaw that I see...

...has two dimensions, each a measure of sociability. Group The group dimension describes how strongly people are bonded together. At one end there are distinct and separated individuals, perhaps with common reason to be together though with less of a sense of unity and connection. At the other end, people have a connected sense of identity, relating more deeply and personally to one another. They spend more time together and have stable relationships. When people group together, then laws are more easily defined and policed. For society to survive when bonds are weaker and central control is less possible, individuals must necessarily display self-restraint. In management, low group does not manage resources, whilst high group does. Grid The grid dimension describes how different people are in the group and how they take on different roles. At one end of this spectrum people are relatively homogeneous in their abilities, work and activity and can easily interchange roles. This makes them less dependent on one another. At the other end, there are distinct roles and positions within the group with specialization and different accountability. There are also different degrees of entitlement, depending on position and there may well be a different balance of exchange between and across individuals. This makes it advantageous to share and organize together. In management, low group does not manage needs, whilst high grid does. The model The model is a two-by-two table...

...Groups and Team Andrea Branch MGT/307 October 20, 2011 University of Phoenix Groups and Team “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Vince Lonbardi. When I was in high school activities my coach or mentor would always say this before we would get started. It holds some truth, for us as a society to survive then the individuals who commit to a group effort is the one’s leading the way. The objective is to discuss one situation where I was part of a group and one situation where I was a team member. What to expect? Well, throughout this discussion the purpose of forming the group and or team will be exposed. What type of group or team was formed will also be included. The chosen leadership and how it came about, the expertise / interest that brought every individual together to form the said group or team. ...Organizational Behavior is the study of the functioning and performance of individuals, groups, and teams within organizations as well as of organizations as a whole. Based on scientific research and empirical data, organizational behavior theorists attempt to understand, predict, and influence behavior at all levels within the organization (internet). Learning about Organizational Behavior can help you develop a better work- related understanding of yourself and others; it is a knowledge platform that can expand your potential for career success in the dynamic, shifting and complex new workplaces of today and tomorrow (textbook). Problems that I have encountered at work are the lack of leadership, and communication. The lack of leadership is that our supervisor or person in charge at night does very little to motivate others in working as a team and getting things done as needed. Most of the time we find ourselves without a leader or our leader showing up late to guide us in our projects. We find ourselves figuring things out on our own most of the time, which most of the time makes us wonder why the person in charge at night is in charge at all. There is little communication with the person in charge, regularly we have to walk around looking for the individual if we have a question because he doesn’t answer his radio when called. Most of the time we end up finding his radio in a different location than the individual. This creates a problem for us because we have administration looking...

Both managers and employees expect to be consulted and information is shared frequently. At the same time, communication is informal, direct and participative. b. Uncertainty Avoidance Australia scores a very intermediate 51 on this dimension. Ambiguity brings with it anxiety and different cultures have learnt to deal with this anxiety in different ways. c. Individualism Australia has a score of 90 on this dimension, which is a highly Individualist culture. This translates into a loosely-knit society in which the expectation is that people look after themselves and their immediate families. In the business world, employees are expected to be self-reliant and display initiative. Also, within the exchange-based world of work, hiring and promotion decisions are based on merit or evidence of what one has done or can do. d. Masculinity Australia scores 61 on this dimension and is considered a “Masculine” society. Behavior in school, work, and play are based on the shared values that people should “strive to be the best they can be” and that “the winner takes all”. Australians are proud of their successes and achievements in life, and it offers a basis for hiring and promotion decisions in the workplace. ...peacemaking Taria Gale Psy 400 October 18, 2015 Robin Harris Elements of Conflict resolution and peacemaking The conflict has been around since the beginning of time. There are conflicts amongst individual, states, cities, countries and families, but there is always a mention or motivation to make peace from the conflict at some point. A relationship or an organization without conflict is probably apathetic (Myers, 2010). Conflict signifies involvement, commitment, and caring (Myers, 2010). If the conflict is understood and recognized, it can end oppression and stimulate renewed and improved human relations (Myers, 2010). Without conflict, people seldom face and resolve their problem (Myers, 2010). Competition the act or process of trying to get or win something (such as a prize or a higher level of success) that someone else is also trying to get or win. The act or process of competing: actions that are done by people, companies, etc., that are competing against each other the competition: a person or group that you are trying to succeed against a person or group that you are competing with ("Competition," 2015). According to Staniland (2012) “One of the most underexplored phenomena in the study of civil war is ‘‘ethnic defection. Ethnic defection is ’’—‘‘a process whereby individuals join organizations explicitly opposed to the national aspirations of the ethnic group with which they identify and end up fighting against their co-ethnics’’ (Kalyvas 2008, 3) (p. 17).
