Individual Learning Styles and Influence on Teaching A learning style is a description of a preference and learning styles are a range of preferences that account for differences in the way an individual learns best, or prefers to learn. The VARK questionnaire is one tool used to help learners identify their preferred learning styles. Thinking about the way one learns is a great step to understanding and improving learning. As a teacher, knowing one’s own learning styles and those learning styles of the student or target audience can be a valuable tool to improve the learning curve and creating the best quality education for your audience (Fleming & Baume, 2006).
Summary of Learning Style and List of preferred Learning Strategies Using the VARK questionnaire, each letter represents a type of learning style. V stands for visual and includes preferences for learning such as charts, diagrams graphs, maps and plans. A stands for aural and examples of this preference include discussions, stories, guest speakers, and chat. R stands for read/write and examples of this preference include lists, notes, and text in all formats whether in print or online. K stands for kinesthetic and examples of this preference include senses, practical exercises, examples, cases, and trial and error. Most participants of the VARK are multi-modal, meaning there is more than one preference of learning involved and one should keep in mind that the results of this questionnaire indicate preferences, not necessarily strengths (Fleming, 2011). An individual with Kinesthetic and Aural learning preferences would prefer to learn with senses, practical exercises, examples, cases, trial and error, discussions, stories, guest

Individual Learning Style

...Individual Learning Style Life is constant learning, including lessons that vary regardless of our preferences. The way we like to learn is unique for everybody and depends on a person’s learning style. Learning styles depict on four different ways of learning and according to the VARK guide, they are Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic. In this essay I will present my learning styles, preferred learning strategies and show a comparison between preferred and identified strategies. Also, I will review how individual learning styles and strategies impact teaching and learning. The VARK questionnaire results show that I have “Multimodal” learning style. It appears that the multimodal style is equilibrium for all four learning styles. Multiple preferences are unique when it comes to that they give you a possibility to choose between all four approaches to our learning and four intercommunications with others. By matching multiple modes to meaningful people that surround us, we create a positive attitude. However, people that wish to cause irritation may choose a mode that is different from the other person’s mode. As my kinesthetic strategy prevails in my learning style, I can consider it significant and preferred in my learning process. Fundamentally kinesthetic learning means that the learner has a demand to be vigorously doing something in order for the process of learning to be productive. It is difficult for these people to concentrate and learn when they are sitting...

Individual Learning Styles and Competencies

...Individual Learning Preferences 1) Describe your strongest dimension on the personality spectrum. According to the personality spectrum, I am cataloged as an organizer and also a thinker, which describes me pretty much in my practical and controlled panning manners. I tend to be organized in my studies and very dependable. Everything I do is systematic, meaning one step at a time in an organized manner. My only negative aspect is that I can become predictable sometimes in my activities but conservative none the less. I am also very detailed on my life and also very disciplined when it comes to serious matters such as economic situations. Organizing is fundamental for all my actions and I can’t really think of another way of doing things. 2) Describe how each practice activity reinforced or contradicted something about yourself The first practice revealed to me something that I didn’t really consider, that I can type and express more confidently with my right hand then my left hand; so that puts a different perspective regarding learning what is really my style and knowing my competencies. This reinforced my learning and expressing methods but declared me as predictable since I’m better “with my right hand than my left”. The second activity guided me to select the correct response to the activity on question. Selecting which input I considered to be correct for the assignment. The third activity describes a situation which we must point what is “Kristen’s” learning...

...Running head: INDIVIDUAL LEARNING STYLES VARK Assignment: Individual Learning Styles June 15, 2014 VARK Assignment: Individual Learning Styles As a student in Grand Canyon University’s nursing 429V class, one of the assignments for the class was to complete the VARK Questionnaire. VARK is an acronym for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetics and was used first to describe learning preferences by Neil Fleming. This questionnaire assists the student in evaluating their learning style and preferences, and assists those who are having difficulty learning to know what else may help them to learn. The questionnaire demonstrated the learning preference of multimodal for this student, and the opportunity presents itself to explore what is identified by the questionnaire is in reality how the individual’s learning occurs. Learning Preferences The learning preference identified for this student was the multimodal preference. This refers to the learning style in which several preferences are very strong when scoring the VARK questionnaire, and the participant can choose between several of the four preferences to use at any time. Approximately 55% of people have this type of learning preference. This student’s strong preferences were, in order of significance, aural/auditory, kinesthetic/tactile, read/write and then visual. Aural/auditory refers to “mode that is spoken or heard; and means that lectures, email, group discussions, radio, mobile phones, talking...

...According to Gulbahar and Alper (2011), learning styles are referred to as the ways people “receive and process information” or the means of “perceiving, processing, storing, and recalling attempts in the learning process”, whereas learning preference is “the choice the individual makes for one learning situation or condition over another” (Cahill & Madigan, 1984). Learning styles and learning preferences tend to increase the quality of learning, and no single preferred learning style works for everyone. There are basically five different learning preferences: visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic, and mixture or multimodal (VARK Learning Styles, 2015), and different strategies can be applied to each learning preference. Individual with visual preference learns best when information is presented in maps, diagrams, charts, and graphs. Individual with aural preference learns best from lectures, tapes, discussion, and speaking, and individual with read/write preference learns best when information is in words, whereas individual with kinesthetic learns best with experience, examples, practice and application. Individual with mixtures is multi-dimensional, and one style is insufficient (VARK Learning Styles, 2015). An individual can particularly be strong in one preference, for example, read/write preference. With this individual learning can be best accomplished by using printed words such as lists, dictionaries, handouts, textbooks, and notes. Learning strategies for this preference can...

...questionnaire assesses a persons’ learning style. Learning style refers to the way a person gathers, processes, organizes and thinks about information ("Learning styles," n.d.). The acronym VARK refers to visual, auditory, read/write and kinesthetic (Fleming & Baum, 2006). VARK is utilized by students and teachers to assist in determining which learning technique or combinations of techniques are used by the person being tested. This tool will allow a person to identify and understand ones strengths and weaknesses which can lead to strategies to help strengthen any identified weaknesses. There are a multiple of learning environments which a student must adapt to. These various environments require a person to implement different learning styles for their own success. The results of the VARK questionnaire will capitulate number results for each learning style and indicate how an individual functions in each kind of learning style. Usually the results will reveal one or two types of learning styles in which the person excels (Bednarik,R., & Franti,P., 2004). Here are the results from an individual that recently took the VARK online assessment. Visual=3, Aural=6, Read/Write=2, Kinesthetic=6. As seen, the score of the test reveals an equality on kinesthetic and aural styles of learning, and an inadequacy in read/write (Fleming & Baum, 2006). This assessment shows the individual where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Understanding ones’ learning preference can be helpful...

...Running head: V.A.R.K. LEARNING STYLE ANALYSIS V.A.R.K. Learning Style Analysis Grand Canyon University Family-Centered Health Promotion: NRS 429v Melanie Escobar, RN MSN March 11, 2012 V.A.R.K. Learning Style Analysis Introduction From the time of birth, individuals are constantly learning. Individual learning styles vary from person to person. It is essential to the education of the individual to learn the particular style of learning that best serves them. One particular analysis tool is the visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic or V.A.R.K. tool (VARK, 2011). This tool allows the individual to identify their particular learning style which will better prepare them throughout their education. My Learning Style Upon completion of the online questionnaire with scores of visual: ten, aural: two, read/write: fourteen, and kinesthetic: eight, it was determined that this student’s learning preference is multimodal. It is estimated that 60 percent of individuals belong to this class of learning styles (VARK, 2011). Being aware of one’s learning style will better equip the individual with an understanding of how to communicate and how to assimilate information which will enhance learning (Mestre, 2010, p.814). The read/write category concentrates on what is in the written word. The individual absorbs more information from books, handouts, notes or anything that can be physically seen. Visual learners concentrate on graphs, diagrams, power point presentations, and pictures...

Communication and Collaboration Strategy

...people with different learning styles and personalities effectively communicate and collaborate on various tasks and assignments? The way that a person learns new skills and abilities depends on his or her learning style and personality. Identifying one’s learning style is important so he or she can expand his or her learning knowledge base and identify his or her strengths and weaknesses. An individuals’ unique learning style relates to how an individual learns and processes the information he or she is given, and dictates how he or she studies and works within a group. The results from the learning pathways assessment revealed that my learning style is intrapersonal and musical. The skills and abilities related to the learning style of intrapersonal and musical are the ability to understand my own thoughts and behaviors, and the ability to think and reason on higher levels. Additionally with the learning style of musical I possess the ability to understand and develop meanings of sounds and patterns. Each learning style people develop have different attributes used to develop better understanding of the world around them. For example, another learning style an individual can possess is logical-mathematical intelligence. An individual with logical-mathematical intelligence has the skills and abilities to solve problems and possess logical reasoning skills (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007). Moreover, people who possess the logical-mathematical learning styles can indentify patterns...

...that individuals need through all aspects of their lives. However, these skills may also be the most difficult skills to master. Communication and collaboration with individuals are difficult skills because of the variety of learning styles and personality types that each individual may have. Understanding different learning styles and personality types can aid in communication and collaboration. By knowing about learning styles and personality types, an individual can adjust communication to a form best received by the other individual. The first step in mastering these skills is to understand learning styles. According to Keys to College Studying, there are eight different learning styles or multiple intelligences. Three of these, and the three that I have heard about most often, are Verbal/Linguistic, Visual/Spatial, and Bodily/Kinesthetic. Verbal/Linguistic learners have the ability to communicate through language. Their strengths include listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Visual/Spatial learners understand spatial relationships and can perceive and create images that assist with their understanding. Bodily/kinesthetic learners have the ability to take in information through bodily sensation. These three learning styles include the people whom learn best by hearing the material, seeing the material, or learning by doing. Each learning style brings its own challenge concerning communication and collaborating with individuals who have different learning styles. I...

...is only complete when an individual can reproduce the knowledge gained from educational institutions, self-study and observance. Retention of knowledge depends on the way students have gained the knowledge; learning style varies from person to person. One method that may be highly appealing to a particular student may not be appealing to another student. So learning style is a very subjective matter and there are different ways to categorize learning styles, this paper focus on VARK learning analysis quiz and learning styles as well as the implication of understanding an individual’s learning style. VARK abbreviation stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. VARK model is one of the most prevalent learning style analyzing tools. Neil Fleming developed it in 1987, to help students and others learn more about their individual learning preferences (Fleming & Mills, 2011). This methodology was the first organized arrangement of questions with ideal responses that could be used to identify students, teachers, and employers learning styles. Under Neil Fleming’s model, learners are identified according to their preferred learning style that are visual learning (images, films, pictorial representation), auditory learning (audio tapes, conversation, speeches), reading and writing (taking notes, manuals, creating list), or kinesthetic learning (movement, experiments, hands-on activities). Visual Learners are those categories of individuals who learn the best from visual...

...Investigation into My Learning Style Ben Thiel COLL100 American Military University Professor Corey Tutor Investigation into My Learning Style Throughout life the term “learning style” is used, each individual has a different assumption of the definition mostly the individual takes on a personal stance and states, “I’m an auditory learner, if you say it once I will remember,” whereas others refer to themselves as most commonly visual or kinesthetic students. However, for one to limit themselves to possessing one type of learning style is quite a limitation. I have always considered my learning style to be predominately visual learner. According to Felder & Soloman, (n.d.) there are multiple learning styles aside from the traditional visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Felder & Soloman (n.d) present eight different learning styles which include; active, reflective, sensing, intuitive, visual, verbal, sequential, and global. Although these styles tend to pull from the traditional three; their definitions give more depth to the characteristics associated with one’s preferred learning style. Felder & Soloman developed a personal questionnaire which allows an individual to answer a series of forty-four questions. Results are given to the individual based on their responses; the scales range from one to eleven in one direction or the other these values compare two learning styles. The numerical value represents the individual’s preference for one learning style verse the opposing...

...Family-Centered Health Promotion November 10, 2015 VARK Analysis Each individual learns or teaches subjects in their own unique way. VARK is a questionnaire that guides one’s learning and teaching style by suggesting the strategies to use (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). It consists of 16 questions that will show if an individual learns or educates more efficiently by (V)isual (i.e. pictures, videos, charts/graphs, diagrams, symbols), (A)ural (i.e. listening to lectures/tutorials, discussing topics with others/self), (R)ead/write (i.e. writing notes/essays, reading books/manuals) or (K)inesthetic/tactile (i.e. hands-on experience, field trips, experiments) sensory mode (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). If a modality isn’t obvious, such a person falls in the category of multimodal. After answering the questionnaire, the learning preference that came up was multimodal style. Multimodal Style When an individual, such as myself, is a multimodal learner, not one single learning modality stands out, rather, the individual employs strategies from all four modalities. There are two types of multimodal learners (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). Type one uses strategies depending on the situation (Introduction to VARK | VARK, n.d.). For example, “if learning music, auditory learning styles would be preferable; if learning art, visual; if learning to build something, tactile.” (What Is Your Learning Style? Visual, Auditory or Tactile, n.d.). Type two uses all four strategies...

...VARK Learning Analysis December 27, 2014 Everyone learns differently not all learners are the same, each individual has a unique and complex system of thinking and learning. But knowing personal preferred learning style can increase the chance of success in school or at work and can enhance self-esteem. “Learning style varies with the personality style”. (Barman, A; Jaafar, R; & Rahim, A; 2009, p.257). Studies have shown that researchers have found various styles of learning but the most famous modal was created by Neil Fleming, an educator, who designed VARK Learning Style which increase the ability of students to improve their learning to be a successful to achieve their goals in school and in carrier which provide them an opportunity for better understand their students through VARK learning assessment. VARK learning modal identifies four basic learning styles. VARK stand for visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic. Visual style help learners by remembering things, such as facts they see with their naked eye and to remember it more lastingly. Visual style play a vital role in our everyday lives, it also helps learners to learn more effectively. Aural learning style provide an opportunity for the learner to hear attentively by utilizing his/her hearing skills and write the notes easily. ...of Individual Learning Styles Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V-101120 01/17/2015 According to Gorge Evans “Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way” (Brainy Quote, 2015). This quote depicts that every individual possesses different learning style and strategies which help in education success. It is realized that in order to accomplish learning and teaching goals a particular learning styles and strategies must be adopted. A school of learning styles has coined many learning strategies that learners and teachers exploit to attain success. There are visual, auditory, read/write and kinesthetic (VARK) developed by Neil Fleming in 1987. The combination of these learning styles was generated for this writer, according to the VARK questionnaire ( www.education.com). Learning Style Summary A quote by Benjamin Franklin states that “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn” summarizes everything about the learning style this individual possesses (Brainy Quote, 2015). The VARK analysis establishes the writers learning style as being first visual and gives it a score of twelve. A visual learner absorbs information by seeing it and committing it to memory. People with visual learning styles tend to like reading, they are detailed oriented and has intense perception of colors and shapes. The second learning style is Kinesthetic and was awarded a score of eleven (VARK, 2015). Individuals with kinesthetic learning style...

...Jasell Wilson-Ferguson Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V-0500 June 14, 2015 VARK Analysis Paper Not all learners are the same. Each individual has a complex system and unique way of thinking and learning. Nurses encounter a population that is broad and diverse across the board. Nurses must be able to adapt and decipher the best ways of connecting with the client, to facilitate learning and understanding of needed knowledge and/or skills. Learning styles are different and unique ways used by individuals as they prepare to learn and recall information (Ranganath, 2015). A tool that can be used to assess and assist with figuring out the preferred learning style for a student and/or client, is the VARK questionnaire. This is a system that was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987. The VARK questionnaire consists of 16 questions with four options to choose from for each question. More than one option may be chosen. The questionnaire is then scored V, A, R, K. Based on the scoring, the questionnaire decipher a student’s preferred learning style. The VARK system addresses learning styles, and gives strategies that promote learning more effectively. VARK identifies four predominant learning styles; (V) visual, (A) aural, (R) reading/writing, and (K) kinesthetic. When used in various combinations, the learner’s preferred learning style is described as multimodal (VARK, 2015). As described by Fleming, a visual learner is someone who learns by using symbolism, different...

To understand your individual learning style Neil Fleming as a questionnaire for understanding learning styles. The VARK-Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic questionnaire was developed to be used as tool to better understand learning styles and how to apply to learning. VARK focuses on the sensory modality dimension of learning; the way that information is taken And processed by the leaner: visual, aural, read/write, or kinesthetic (Sinclaire, Spring 2012). Visual learners favor information presented in diagrams, illustration, powerpoints and handouts. Also the visual learner is more likely to take additional notes during lectures. Learning by seeing the information being presented. Aural learners learn through listening. During Aural learning the student learns best hearing lectures, tutorials and discussions. Autditory learners understand the underlying meaning of speech through active listening. Read/Write learners favor printed information. They learn best through reading and writing.
