Individualized Consideration from the Transformational Leadership chapter is the one concept that is important to me because, it is the degree to which a leader attends to each of his follower's needs, acts as a mentor or coach to the follower, and listens to the follower's concerns. Multifaceted leaders, who apply sound individualized behaviors during feedback sessions, actively participate during discussions and empathize with the needs of the follower. This concept will enable me to improve and provide individual support for my subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
As an air traffic controller with a mind-set for handling high risks on a routine basis, my personality demands I do things by the book. Consequently, I have been conditioning myself in such a way that it makes it slightly difficult to truly offer the concepts of individualized consideration. I approach my peers and subordinates in a very analytical way, just as I would while assessing congested airspace. While that mentality is a valuable asset in handling the stressors of my profession, that same attitude may also manifest as a barrier when communicating effectively as a leader. …show more content…
