With the right VU qualifications, graduates can apply to live and work in Australia for up to four years under the Australian Government Post-Study Work Visa arrangements. VU WORK ETHIC

VU'S UNIQUE GRADUATES

Robert Hadded is an alumnus who now hires
VU graduates because of their strong work ethic. Meenah Marchbank supports the high calibre of students that graduate from VU’s
Education programs.

“VU helped breed in us a work ethic that we see in VU graduates today, and we have been employing VU graduates since 2002.

"VU graduates come from a diverse range of backgrounds.
We celebrate this diversity and appreciate the richness it brings. My lecturers taught me more than just the discipline of business and accounting. I learnt to think independently, take pride in my study and bring the best to whatever I do
– traits that all VU graduates I’ve employed possess. It's great that we can now offer VU graduates and current students work experience in our business."

The multicultural graduates from Victoria University allow our students from similar cultural backgrounds to really connect. Under the student visa regulations, most international students can work for a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight
(two weeks) once they have started their course, for the duration of their visa. Masters by Research and PhD students are the exception and can work unlimited hours once studies have commenced. All international students can work an unlimited number of hours during the summer and winter non-teaching periods.

I consider VU graduates for roles because the course selection process helps identify students who are passionate about education. The flexible pathways into VU teaching degrees capture the students who really want to be teachers. "

Find out more on www.immi.gov.au Our Career Development and Employment support staff at
Victoria University also offer career advice and other services to current students, and for up to two years after you graduate.
For more information on student employment services, go to www.vu.edu.au/careers/career-services-for-students

LEARNING FROM THE BEST
Principal Colin Schot believes VU’s education programs prepare graduates with a good grounding in teaching and learning to find success as educators.
"We have successfully employed VU graduates since 2010 and will continue to do so. I’ve found VU graduates to be enthusiastic, committed and well-prepared to enter teaching positions at Warringa Park School.
I value graduates who are able to learn, take on responsibility and show initiative, and VU graduates never fail to demonstrate this.
VU placements allows the school to gain an intimate knowledge of the students skills and the competencies in light of possible future employment opportunities.”

Victoria University
CRICOS Provider No. 00124K

CROWNING THE BEST
Paula Ntalianis has supported the
University’s Work-Integrated-Learning program for over 15 years.
"The program at Victoria University prepares students for real life industry experience.
Over the last 10 years, Crown (entertainment complex) has employed over 30 students, and we’ve had some amazing successes with graduates who have built their careers here.
Students have started in frontline roles and progressed to more specialised roles upon graduation.
My advice to anyone thinking of pursuing a career in tourism and hospitality is to be open-minded, work hard and take every opportunity to learn from others."

Industrial Engineering in South Africa

...wealthof a nation and industrial engineering As a student that ended up studying industrial engineering by chance, I have really had to learn about industrial engineering through (the usual) reading, and vacation work and exposure to other industrial engineers. From the knowledge presented to me from people’s kind words of boredom and the internet’s overloading of information, I have come to understand industrial engineering as this. It is an engineering whereby resources and processes are integrated into cohesive strategies, structures and systems for efficient and effective production of goods and services. It uses specialised knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, behavioural, and economic and management fields and combines them with the principles and methods of engineering analyses and design to find optimal and practical solutions, which contribute to the creation of wealth. I have a vision. I have a vision that industrial engineering can solve many of South Africa’s problems. These problems, or let us rather term these challenges, are attracting new forms of foreign investment, creation and implementation of policies, amongst others to create jobs and grow the economy. The structure in order for this to happen is very important. South Africa at the moment is undergoing a huge change whereby new amendments are being done to all sectors of the economy. There is also a great need to stimulate entrepreneurship. Industrial engineering has the potential to review...

This paper presents an adaptation and adoption by a UK SME engineering service organisation, of lean management, industrial engineering, and automation metods developed within larger organisations. This SME sought to improve the overall performance of one of its core testing processes. An exploratory analysis, based on the lean management concept of “value added” and work measurement technique “time study”, was developed and carried out in order to understand the current performance of a testing process for gas turbine fuel flow dividers. A design for the automation of some operations of the testing process...

I will have to admit that you are going to have some complex authority relationships, especially as you personally will be responsible to the president of the subsidiary, Felix Delgado, as well as to me.” Conway began to make his plans for the project team. The plant building was available and empty in Mexico City, and it was important to get equipment purchased and installed as soon as possible. A plant layout would have to be prepared, but before that could be done there would have to be a manufacturing plan. Therefore, he needed to recruit an industrial engineer, a production planner, and an equipment buyer. They, in turn, would have to build their own staffs....

...Review and Discussion Questions What is the difference between OM and OR/MS? Between OM and IE? Operations management is the design, operation and improvement of the systems that create and deliver the firms primary products and services. Operations research and management science is the application of quantitative methods to decision making in all fields. Operations managers use operations research in their decision making and deal with the same issues as Industrial Engineers. OR/MS is applied mathematics while IE is a discipline of engineering. What factors account for the resurgence of interest in OM today? * Effectively consolidating the operations resulting from mergers. * Developing flexible supply chains to enable mass customization of products and services * Managing global supplier, production, and distribution networks. * Increased commodization of suppliers * Achieving the service factory * Enhancing value-added services * Making efficient use of internet technology * Achieving good service from service firms. Can a factory be fast, dependable, and flexible; produce high quality products and still provide poor customer service from a customer’s perspective? Yes, although the company may be producing a fast, flexible high quality product the factory from the customer’s perspective can still provide poor customer service because they are not meeting the customers’ demands or the customers’ demands are not driving strategy development...

Analysis and Optimization of the Manufacturing Processes Within a Truss Manufacturing Company Through the Application of Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Occupational Safety Principles and Techniques

...ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES WITHIN A TRUSS MANUFACTURING COMPANY THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING, AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES by ROSMARDY FLORES NARANJO ABSTRACT In spite of remarkable improvements in recent decades, the construction industry and areas related continue to be one of the industries with the poorest safety records. Low statistics in environmental improvements can be also noticed. Organizations that have implemented improvements have integrated big efforts of owners, contractors, subcontractors, and designers. The truss industry is not an exception to this problematic. This industry, which is related directly to the home building industry and has boomed in recent decades, seems to have a lack of controls and regulations. Many of these problems may be linked, for example, to the lack of interest from management to improve and regulate such important areas as occupational safety and environmental hygiene. While past studies on occupational safety, environmental control, and quality control have been conducted in different areas of the construction industry, the truss industry and the owner’s impact on construction safety have not been previously investigated. This paper presents the results of a study within a truss manufacturing company, which was evaluated and studied in the areas of occupational safety, environmental control, and quality control. Data were obtained...

Namrata Singh, TNN/Mar14, 2013, 9.34 PM 1st Mumbai: People productivity is the key to Indian manufacturing competitiveness says a report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In most global people productivity surveys, not only does people productivity of Indian manufacturing sector lags developed nations such as US and Japan but also lags in most manufacturing sectors to China. While earlier, many explained this to differences are not only rapidly shrinking, but they do not fully explain the significant gaps in productivity that exists. Skill gap and engagement gap are the two critical factors that explain lower productivity leads to improved skills and better working environment- thus paving the way for higher investments and faster economic growth therefore it is critical for the Indian manufacturing sector to work toward enhancing people productivity to achieve the goals it has set for itself,” the report says. The subject gains importance in the backdrop of a slowdown in western economic countries & China, as well as cost increases in China. Indian manufacturing sector stands at the cusp of a tremendous opportunity. After reading the case study answer the following questions: a) What...

...handling costs. Finally, I will conclude that an outstanding and effective layout strategy will give a firm a competitive advantage. Layout strategy is a critical part of an operations manager’s strategy decision. In this paper, I will identify and define the different types of layout, explain how to attain a good layout to have a productive process and how to balance production or service flow in many various service or product oriented industries. The proper strategic importances of layout decisions, the types of layout, layout design considerations and superior layouts to consider are points that I will discuss. There are many variables of layout that contain wide ranges of considerations in determining an optimal layout. There are engineering quality standards and budgetary decisions to consider when modernizing layout, improving safety, energy efficiency as well as reducing environmental impacts. The purpose and strategic importance of a layout...

Management Something to Do

...C H A P T E R Operations and Productivity 1 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. The text suggests four reasons to study OM. We want to understand (1) how people organize themselves for productive enterprise, (2) how goods and services are produced, (3) what operations managers do, and (4) this costly part of our economy and most enterprises. 2. Possible responses include: Adam Smith (work specialization/ division of labor), Charles Babbage (work specialization/ division of labor), Frederick W. Taylor (scientific management), Walter Shewart (statistical sampling and quality control), Henry Ford (moving assembly line), Charles Sorensen (moving assembly line), Frank and Lillian Gilbreth (motion study), Eli Whitney (standardization). 3. See references in the answer to question 2. 4. The actual charts will differ, depending on the specific organization the student chooses to describe. The important thing is for students to recognize that all organizations require, to a greater or lesser extent, (a) the three primary functions of operations, finance/accounting, and marketing; and (b) that the emphasis or detailed breakdown of these functions is dependent on the specific competitive strategy employed by the firm. 5. The answer to this question may be similar to that for question 4. Here, however, the student should be encouraged to utilize a more detailed knowledge of a past employer and indicate on the chart additional information such as the number of persons employed to perform the...
