Negative and Positive Influences of Technology
Technology is seen in our everyday lives from our homes to our car and even our jobs. In today’s generation teenagers have experienced a whole lifetime with technology. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid” Nicholas carr mentions that today “americans from ages 12 to 24 spend about three hours on the internet.” In This essay I will speak of the negative and positive impacts and or consequences that come from all the time we spend using technology. As we continue to utilize technology more and more, we begin to further away from other things like books. The internet has completely destroyed our way of thinking. With this being said computers and cellphones have “become our maps, clocks, calculator, telephone, our printing press, our typewriter, and even our own radio and TV.” The technology we have has become very powerful. We can now use one certain device for many tasks. For instance, google our own search engine has become our personal helper and “the perfect search engine.” When we need to know certain information or answers to a question google is there to guide us. Nicholas carr explains that with so much technology “people have become machinelike.” We utilize technology for almost everything we do. Computers and cellphones are our go to when we don’t know a word or the answer to a certain math problem. Carr goes on to explaining “Kubrick’s dark prophecy.” As humans we are coming to the point where we “entrust way too much on computers” for our information and answers. It is like our own “intelligence” has “flatten out and turned into artificial intelligence.” We manage to get everything done through technology and avoid doing any of the work ourselves with books and the old fashion way. In “Meet Your iBrain” Gary and Vorgan explain that technology has caused “the brain to react more quickly.” As humans we have become better at “rapid ad incisive spurts” of concentration. Technology helps us become more efficient and betters our skills. Gary and Vorgan also explain that the more we use technology and surf the web, we “develop a better ability to go through large amounts of information.” Essentially we become better at skimming and gaining all the important key points in a paper or article.
