...Cynthia Martinez Professor Holden English 1A 28 April 2014 Climate Change Over the years, there has been scientific evidence that shows the dangerous effects of climate change. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, they define climate change as the change in global climate patterns that are increasingly apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. The evidence of climate change has become more apparent and has increased its affects throughout the years and cannot go unnoticed any longer. This controversial issue is very important to take a stand on creating a better future for the world and get U.S. leaders to start the change in slowing down climate change while preparing for the worse. Since Earths formation 4.5 billion years ago we have experienced many different climates that range from sudden warming and cooling periods throughout decades. The world is constantly changing various examples are that seas have risen or fallen meters, jungles have spread or shrunk, and ice caps have melted all who have corresponded to the natural climate cycle (“Climate Change”). There have been global climate changes that have broken records from the past 1,000 years. These changes have happened from the use of atmospheric greenhouse gases and fossil fuels. ...Communication Release to Employees I would call a mandatory employee meeting to address the other employees of the mine and inform them of the incident face to face as a group. It would go as follows, it is with a heavy heart that I come to you today to inform you of the tragic events that have stricken our family. On the fifth of August, 33 men were trapped in a mine collapse. They are approximately 300 meters below the surface. We have not been able to establish any line of communication with them yet, but we are hopeful that will change very soon. We have rescue crews working diligently, as we speak, to locate the exact location of the collapse in order to assess the condition of the miners, and to establish a means of communication. We do not know the condition of the men in the mine as of this moment, but we are hoping to find the men alive and well and be able to bring a safe end to this tragedy quickly. Please refrain from going to the site so the rescue crews are able to do their work. Any information obtained will be relayed to you in a timely manner. Stay calm and keep these men in your prayers. Thank you for your cooperation. Communication Release to family members I would not consider any other means of communication other than face to face to inform the family members of this tragedy. The Art of Public Speaking

...on how to avoid common public speaking mistakes, that even experienced speakers sometimes make, and tips on how to master the art of storytelling. The three main types of speeches are the informative, the persuasive, and the special occasion. Before deciding which best suits their purposes, however, speakers should first establish their objective in delivering the speech. Once speakers have the objective clearly established, they are then equipped to make the most suitable choice regarding what type of speech to deliver; however, before making this decision, they must have a clear understanding of the three main types of speeches. As the word “informative” implies, an informative speech “informs” those in attendance by providing them with information. Therefore, the speaker is a teacher, and his or her purpose is to educate the audience regarding a topic; and that topic may be an object, an event, a concept, or a process. Note: Given their visual nature, most informative speeches are more successful if the speaker uses visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations, flip charts, graphs, models, etc. A persuasive speech usually challenges an audience’s beliefs and/or tries to move those in attendance to change existing viewpoints or at least recognize the validity of opposing...

Course Reflection

...after my school counselor told me that I needed to take a Speech Communication class. Knowing that it was a pre requisite to graduate, I know that I had no other choice but to tough it out. The next several weeks, I thought would be some “agonizing” weeks, turned out to be some of the most fruitful times I had at National University. Public speaking has always been one of my weaknesses, but taking this class has provided me with many tools to add to my tool bag to be successful in public speaking. One of the lessons I have learned is knowing the basics of communication is important in building the foundation of a good speech. So, when we are preparing for a speech, we have to know our audience. Another part of the basics of communication that is just as important is knowing how ethics ties into communications. When speaking to an audience you must build trust based on factual information. If you give factual information and not false information your audience will be more likely to receive your message. Another important lesson I have learned is, how important Speech preparation is. It can either make or break your speech. So, come unprepared, you are almost guaranteed to fail in delivering an effective speech. If you prepare properly, your speech will come out almost naturally. The first part of speech preparation is to know what type of speech you are going to give. Is it to persuade inform, or entertain? Based on the three types of speeches, knowing...

...Traditional On Campus Class Welcome to the Traditional On Campus version of Speech 103 Oral Communication! I look forward to getting to know each of you. Over the years, I have learned that many of you dread taking this class (don’t worry I felt the same way when I had to take this class) but I hope that you will find your worries to be unfounded. I work very hard to try to create a comfortable learning environment, primarily because I need you to participate in order for this class to work. This is a participatory-based class where we will all work together to help each other improve our communication skills. Consequently, you will play an active role in your own learning as well as active role in the learning of the other students in this class. Research has shown that when you are an active participant in a class you increase how much you remember as well as how much you can recall after the semester has ended. However, I have found that when you are an active participant in my class you will look forward to coming to each class session and your fears of public speaking will soon decrease. Since this class is participatory, you will find that you will put a lot of thought and effort into this class. Much learning will occur both in class and out side of class. However, while this class is demanding, I hope that you will both enjoy this experience and learn a great deal about communication, how you communicate, and how to be a better...
