SUBJECT: Choices of Media Options to Promote the Program

Because of its lack of publicity, Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce needs to promote itself. This report’s purpose is to recommend various media options that can give positive exposure for the program. It will present advantages and disadvantages of three media options: newspaper, television, and social media. This report is significant because our program is not being promoted to prospective students.

The report begins by explaining the significance of the need. Next, three alternatives are described and a recommendation is specified based on my findings.

Significance of Need: Exposure to Prospective Students

Bachelor of Commerce is an increasing choice of program for high school graduates and undecided individuals. However, we’re not exposing much of Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce to prospective students. After the school’s transformation to university status three years ago, we have not taken the opportunity to promote our program. This will not aid us in being more attractive than our biggest competition, the University of Alberta. The University of Alberta uses mainly social media to promote itself and has taken opportunities to publish as much about their program:

* YouTube BSAVoice’s Channel (2011). * Facebook University of Alberta School of Business (2010). * Twitter UAlberta Business (2012). * LinkedIn Alberta School of Business (2012).

The University of Alberta’s School of Business is usually the first choice of students because it’s a reputable university. But according to CBC News, Grant MacEwan as the new university will focus on teaching, unlike institutions such as the University of Alberta and University of Calgary, which conduct research as well as teach students (“Grant MacEwan now a university”, 2009). We have an advantage over our competition thus we should emphasize this to the public. Below, I will discuss three media options that we can use to promote Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce.

Alternative 1: Newspaper

Often, we will see schools or specific programs promoting themselves in a newspaper. We can follow this and start promoting our program in the major newspapers: The Edmonton Sun and The Edmonton Journal.

Advantages

Although Grant MacEwan promotes itself in numerous newspapers, our program doesn’t. Newspapers have the advantage of giving us the choice of the size and incorporating all necessary information in the ad space. We can include program details, employment opportunities, benefits of taking the program at our school, and average tuition fees. Exposure is unlimited because readers can return to it over time. As well, it reaches a wide range of local readers.

Disadvantages

Most of our target audience doesn’t look at the newspaper. Because of the Internet, newspaper readership is declining. The ad space is costly, with an average of $3.53 per newspaper. Also, our promotion will have to compete with the others in the newspaper that could be more appealing. Therefore, it’s not the most effective media option.

Alternative 2: Television

Companies and schools use television to advertise through commercials. We can have a 30-second segment on Global and CTV. We can include students’ testimonials, program details, what a typical student does, and how our program differs from other schools’.

Advantages

Television is the most widely used medium in promoting. It has a wider range of audience because every household in the city has at least one television. Canadians watch approximately 28.5 hours of television (“Canadians’ television viewing appetite on the rise”, 2012) per week. If a memorable commercial is aired about Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce, then it’s likely that individuals will remember. As opposed to print media, television can deliver visual and sound advertising to the public. This captivates the audience more effectively.

Disadvantages

The effects of television depend on the creativity of the commercial. If it’s not as appealing as other commercials, then individuals will not be attracted. It’ll also be difficult to decide how and what information to include in a 30-second segment. It has to have a clear and direct message to show how our program is suitable for the audience. It is expensive, as the average cost for a commercial is $4,000 a month (Bitti, 2012).

Alternative 3: Social Media

Social media has been an increasing medium for promoting, since Internet use is on the rise. More school programs are using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube to publish and interact with students, parents, and prospective students. We should follow this trend and join these social media.

Advantages

People all over the world have been using the Internet to do any type of activity. According to Global News, 62 per cent of Canadians use social media sites nearly every day (“Albertans most likely to use social media during disaster”, 2012). It’s the fastest medium for information to be transferred around. As opposed to television and newspaper, it is inexpensive and it could also be free to join. It gives an opportunity to interact and provide information. It is easy and fast to add or remove information; we can add daily, so that we can constantly update people about our program. This will enable us to succeed in enhancing our image and exposure.

Disadvantages

Although more people are using the Internet, it’s not accessible for those who cannot afford a cellphone, tablet, or computer. As well, people usually go on social media to socialize and not to look at promotional ads. Therefore, everything we post has to catch the eyes of individuals immediately. Our program has to continually modify to maintain competitive advantage, and it could be time consuming.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Promoting the program is essential in retaining students. It takes time and effort to create and maintain the promotional ads to the public’s taste. Comparing all three alternatives, the most effective and cost-efficient is social media. Although the newspaper and television reach a wide audience, they don’t target our desired audience. Conversely, the two alternatives are more expensive to implement. If our goal is to enhance our image, we should look into social media. Social media will capture most of our target audience. We’ll have the ability to interact with individuals, so it can give us positive exposure. We can modify our profiles or add information and videos when necessary. Although it will be difficult to reach out at first, over time more people will notice and our popularity will increase in the social media.

Therefore, I recommend that we promote Grant MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce by creating accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. As well, we should post videos about our program’s activities on YouTube.

If anyone has worked in corporate America, teams are likely to be incorporated into that organizational culture. For example, Aflac has several teams based on divisions and departments.
