...EXPERIMENT NO: 1 AIM: To study Information Life Cycle Management. THEORY: INFORMATION LIFECYCLE: The information lifecycle is the “change in the value of information” over time. When data is first created, it often has the highest value and is used frequently. As data ages, it is accessed less frequently and is of less value to the organization. Understanding the information lifecycle helps to deploy appropriate storage infrastructure, according to the changing value of information. For example, in a sales order application, the value of the information changes from the time the order is placed until the time that the warranty becomes void (see Figure 1-7). The value of the information is highest when a company receives a new sales order and processes it to deliver the product. After order fulfillment, the customer or order data need not be available for real-time access. The company can transfer this data to less expensive secondary storage with lower accessibility and availability requirements unless or until a warranty claim or another event triggers its need. After the warranty becomes void, the company can archive or dispose of data to create space for other high-value information. Information Lifecycle Management Today’s business requires data to be protected and available 24 × 7. Data centers can accomplish this with the optimal and appropriate use of storage infrastructure. An effective information management policy is required to support...

All three companies have been hugely successful in different aspects of their industry. However, as our society’s technology continues to develop each company has had to make drastic changes to adapt to new and upcoming trends. As discussed in the case study, the perfect example of this necessary adaptation is a trending statistic that predicts a majority of users will begin browsing the internet on mobile devices versus the traditional PC. This probable trend has led to a lively battle of innovation as each company struggles to be number one in the consumer internet experience. Throughout this battle to the top each company has experienced their fair share of issues. Microsoft is perhaps one of the most famous and respected companies in the world. The corporation was founded April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates, an inventor known for creating one of the first user-friendly operating systems for personal computers. Over the decades the company has been a huge success, but not without its failures which often seem to be as of late. What once may have been an internet experience that was easily dominated by Microsoft technology is now saturated with...

...destination, and package arrival times. This data is received by UPS's central computer for processing and the information is then forwarded to one of their distribution centers where logistical planning will occur. UPS drivers are given a handheld Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD) which can immediately record and upload pickup and delivery information and pictures of recipient signature to the UPS network, called UPSnet, for storing and processing. The data being sent from the DIAD is gathered from the scannable label on packages, recipient signatures captured, time card info, satellite feed of traffic patterns and changing schedules. Finally, all this information's outputs will include the UPS intranet available company-wide to distribution centers, customer service centers, etc., and the internet via UPS's website or embedded UPS functions within corporate customer's own websites. What technologies are used by UPS? How are these technologies related to UPS's business strategy? The technologies at UPS include bar code scanning systems, wireless networks, large mainframe computers, handheld computers, the Internet, and various softwares for tracking packages, calculating fees, maintaining customer accounts, and maintaining logistics. ...Journal The Evolution of Information Management By Don Hatcher, Bill Prentice Customers today are demanding better service, lower prices, and higher quality goods. With such a volatile economy in recent years and with so many businesses competing for the same customers, it is imperative for companies to continually improve their customer service or else risk falling victim to their competitors. This is one reason why many organizations are rethinking how they do business. For years, they have accumulated valuable information as a by-product of production while failing to put it to good use. When a company knows its customers’ buying patterns, interests, and demographics, it provides a distinct competitive advantage. This knowledge has become so critical in recent years that the process of managing information has become an industry of its own. How does a company manage its strategic information assets in today’s rapidly changing business environment? What challenges arise out of that task? Are there any preventive measures that can ease the “growing pains” associated with moving from one information paradigm to the next? No matter how simple or convoluted the current information architecture is, evolving companies’ effective use of information can help them achieve a level of sustainable competitive advantage that can be measured on the bottom line. ...In-Class Activity for Ch. 3 Due September 24 2012 1. Evaluate the impact of the iPad using Porter’s competitive forces model. * Traditional Competitors- Apple’s traditional competitors were companies that sold mp3 players, computers, and phones. * New Market entrants-Now their competitors have branched out to businesses that make digital book readers, websites that offer books online, textbook companies, and book/magazine/ and newspaper publishers. * As a substitute product and service- Substitute products and services for Apple would be Kindle, publishers of paperback books, and other e-readers. * Suppliers- Apple may impose high levels of pressure on businesses to raise their prices, lower the quantity of the product they are making, or push them in to having to reduce the availability of their product because they are no longer making the profits they had before the iPad came on the market. 2. What makes the iPad a disruptive technology? Who are likely to be the winners and losers if the iPad becomes a hit? Why? * The iPad is a disruptive technology because it is more expensive than the products it is replacing. It cost more to buy an iPad per megabyte than it does to by a notebook. * It doesn’t necessarily work as well as the products it is replacing. Trying to type a document on an iPad is difficult, and if you truly want to take notes, you need to buy an apple keyboard, which will run you another $100 or so. * Research...

...D., in today’s world Management Information System, a computerized processing system is needed in generating information for the people in the organization to meet the information needed in decision making to achieve the corporate objective of the organization. In any organization, small or big, a major portion of the time goes in data collection, processing, documenting it to the people. Hence, a major portion of the overheads goes into this kind of unproductive work in the organization. Every individual in an organization is continuously looking for some information which is needed to perform his/her task. Hence, the information is people-oriented and it varies with the nature of the people in the organization. The difficulty in handling this multiple requirement of the people is due to a couple of reasons. The information is a processed product to fulfill an imprecise need of the people. It takes time to search the data and may require a difficult processing path. It has a time value and unless processed on time and communicated, it has no value. The scope and the quantum of information is individual-dependent and it is difficult to conceive the information as a well-defined product for the entire organization. Since the people are instrumental in any business transaction, a human error is possible in conducting the same. Since a human error is difficult to control, the difficulty arises in ensuring a hundred percent quality assurance of information in terms of completeness...
