Information Systems and Software Application

Introduction

There are various types of information systems, such as: transaction processing systems, office systems, decision support systems, knowledge management systems, database management systems, and office information systems. Information systems are information technologies, which are typically designed to enable humans to perform tasks that the human brain is not well suited to process, such as: handling large amounts of information, performing complex calculations, and controlling many simultaneous processes. I currently use the following information systems at work: Human Resource Management System, Marketing Information System, and Accounting Information System.

Human Resource Management System

In my current position I am a Project Manager with the Marketing Department. My responsibilities consist of dealing with these systems daily. For example, I process payroll for my department using components of Human Resource Management System (HRMS). The process consists of gathering data on employee time and attendance, and calculating their hours prior to submitting them to the payroll department. Through using the HRSM system it allows me to analyze and screen job applicants, and assist with the hire of new employees.

Marketing Information System

I am responsible for assisting the Director of Marketing by using the Marketing Information System to address the operational needs through customer management system that focus on the day-to-day processing of customer relations, determining the best location for production and distribution marketing material. The system also allows me to identify the best advertising channels, and the development of

...Software Applications and Information Systems Introduction When reviewing process maps for any mid-size to large scale business, the reviewer will find a complex system of interconnected steps tied to the various organizations within the business. This transactional information needs to be communicated correctly between each of the existing organizations information systems. Enterprise Resource Planning Established businesses have tailored their information systems to meet the growing needs of the business. In these cases, separate information systems may have been installed to meet the objectives of each of the organizations. What businesses have realized, is the information system standalone systems did not communicate effectively (if at all). (Rainer & Turban, 2011). Consequently, the individual information systems are acting as silos, containing information that cannot be shared from one information system to another. Eventually, businesses need to fill the communication gaps that exist. Linking these separate information systems creates a challenge for the business. There are a few well known software suppliers that provide flexible business suites that are able to integrate the disjointed information systems under one complete system solution. Oracle and SAP are the most popular suppliers of such systems. Within the business suite these systems are known...

This day in age, it is essential that these resources be taken advantage of by the vast majority of employees in a company. Three departments that benefit an extraordinary amount from information systems and software applications are human resources, management and marketing. Human resource departments use information systems and software applications to manage employees within a company. Multiple software applications can be used by a single department and an example of this would be the human resource department using one application to monitor employee turnover and another application to screen job applicants (Rainer & Turban, 2008). The ability to manage these two job functions through software applications make the jobs of employees in the human resource department easier and increase the overall effectiveness of the entire company. The applications allow human resources to hire the best employees for the job openings and effectively manage all of the data that they compile.
