Information Technology’s Effect on Society

Information technology’s effect on society

Technology has really changed American society for the better. For instance,

technology has benefited our lives in the areas of business, and education. If America and

the rest of the world did not have technology, getting business and trading done could

take days or even weeks; education would not be as interesting without the help of

computers.

There are many ways technology has benefited business. The first way technology

has helped is through better reporting functions. Businesses that have locations all over

the globe use technology to bring about better communication services and software

modules that communicate to a home base through the Internet. This lets companies

move into new markets without giving up the needs of communication or financial

reporting. Speaking of financial reporting, technology has also benefited this area by

creating a central center accounting to record and put in place financial transactions

instead of sending multiple auditors to places all over the world. Technology in the

workplace also increases worker productivity. It allows the workers to provide data entry

functions or review automated reports. Also technology helps people who work in

customer service, accounting, and administrative positions. Instead of having to manually

get all their information, computers help these employees analyze and document

electronic sources so that it is delivered on time. And finally technology benefits

businesses because it allows for greater mobility. It allows employees to use personal

electronic devices to make sales displays and process orders and customer information all

from the comforts of home. These technological devices have reduced the lead time

businesses spend on accepting and sending out goods and services, thereby giving these

companies an instant competitive advantage.

Information Technology’s Effect on Society

...Information Technology’s Effect on Society Consider for a moment what our society would be like without the advent of information technology? What if we didn’t have the answers to life’s most pressing questions at our fingertips, if we didn’t know what our friends were thinking at any given time of the day? Do you think we would be able to survive in the same manner as people did a few decades ago? These plastic masterpieces known as computers have made such a tremendous impact on our daily lives that the mere thought of not having them strikes fear in our hearts. We have become so accustomed to them dominating our lives; we take for granted the fact that we do not even have to leave the privacy of our homes to run the simplest errands. We no longer have to stand in lines to pay our bills. This can be done with the click of a mouse button. We can shop for anything from a pair of shoes to a much larger purchase like a car. Choose the best price, brand, or color, enter your credit card information, and you are done. Busy, active people no longer have to go off to college and leave home in the pursuit of higher education. Information technology now allows them the ability to have it all; continue earning their weekly/ monthly salary, play their roles within the family, and earn their degrees as the kids drift off to sleep. You may even take it a step further by searching for a job and working at home all while staying connected to the world around you. Security...

Nicholas Carr The Shallows Analysis

...Since the beginning of computers and the internet, society has become very dependent upon them, wasting many hours browsing and suffering the different sources of the world wide web. According to Nicholas Carr, “The price we pay to assume technology’s power is alienation. The toll can be particularly high with our intellectual technologies. The tools of the mind amplify and in turn numb the most intimate, the most human, of natural capacities- those for reason perception, memory, emotion”(211). What Carr is saying is that the internet causes the brain to be affected more than any other form of technology. With the invention of the printing press, books has had a major impact on the mind, but between that time and the invention of the internet, no other device has had the effect that the internet has. As society becomes more dependent upon the internet, researchers have discovered that the brain has changed the way a person reads, focuses, and performs certain activities, also the internet being the easiest place to gain any information it makes it number source...

...nowadays our society has enjoyed the benefits of having modern technology. We are blessed with modern tools, which could perform to what seemed to be an impossible task in the past like retrieving information in a matter of seconds. However, this often comes with unforseen and undesirable consequences defeating the very objective in the first place. To my mind, modern technology is a bane than a boon. It cannot be denied that the technological improvement brings forth to us some advantages. Firstly, it helps man communicate local or oversea by writing email, telephone or mobile. A student , for instance, who is studying abroad can talk to his family by chatting and web cam rather than waiting for a hand - writing letters. Secondly, the modern tools also support man in business and studying. It makes better condition to fulfill tasks faster and more convenient. For example, a student spend less time searching information and documents by clicking mouse on google rather than is stuck with many books in library. A business man can deal with his job by using laptop and internet whereas he can still enjoy holiday with his family. Nevertheless, for every solution technology provides twice as many problems are likely to cause. The modern technology is to some extent underlying causes of negative things in our society. It's Internet that provides an accessible medium for bad elements such as pornography, crimes and so on. the teenagers who are not conscious enough tend to imitate...

Bullying And Stereotypes

...Bullying is one of the biggest problems in today’s society. Unfortunately, regardless of countless efforts to stop this, it is still a major issue. So far, researchers have identified four main types of bullying: physical, verbal, relational, and cyber (Brank 214). With technology’s rapid advancement, cyber bullying has reached a new level of prevalence in today’s age. People are bullied for various reasons, including: deviations between the victim and society serve as a basis for this “youth-on-youth victimization”. Due to the stereotypes of gay men and women, as well as homophobia in society, homosexuals are often victims of “stereotype threat” which occurs when a person a person is at risk of appearing to confirm a negative connotation...

Technology's Impact

...Technology’s Impact on society Humanity has evolved from the essence that separates humans from beasts. The ability to use the mind for reason. Reason is the ability to analyze, create, deduce, and formulate. It is reason that enables human beings to strive to invent; it is through invention that mankind has developed society and created a better world. We could say that technology is the sum total of instrumentally useful culturally-transmissible information. Technology is a word used to collectively describe or portray the advancements, abilities, creations, undertakings, views, and knowledge of a singular group of persons: we as human-kind. When there is talk about the relationships between technology and humanity, it is evident that we have to deal with the interrelations between some very complex phenomena. Technology, science, society or systems of societies, and systems of rights of a universal nature. The discovery and development of a large number of powerful energy sources-coal, petroleum, electricity etc. have enabled humanity to conquer the barriers of nature. All this has facilitates the growth of fast modes of transport, which in turn has transformed the world into a global village. In the “old days”, we used phones for talking to each other. That was it. Not for texting. Not for browsing the web. And not for playing Angry Birds (a nightmare, I know). In the past, technology was a bonus, not a necessity. We did not rely on technology to get from...

Technology

...Technology’s Affects on Communication The role technology plays in society has changed significantly in just the past few years. Communication technologies such as the Internet, cell phones, and tablets, have initiated a revolution in telecommunications. Although the ways humans communicate have expanded, the use of such technology has had negative effects on the nature of social interactions. In my personal opinion, technology decreases social skills due to the fact that it reduces the quality of communication, limits face-to-face interaction, and causes social isolation. Between the usage of smart phones and other technological advancements, the quality of communication is negatively affected. Multitasking, although seemingly beneficial, causes the users to never give their full attention towards another person. Many people are too busy looking at their phones to even make eye contact with the people they are talking with. The complexity of human interaction has decreased to a very basic level. Instead of having genuine conversation, many choose to simply relay information using text messages. In addition to the decrease in the quality of communication, technology causes a reduction in face-to-face interaction. This is due to the fact that face-to-face interaction is rarely needed anymore. Information can be transferred in ways that are much faster than a traditional conversation. Technology causes people to spend their time doing different things rather than holding...

Scientists and engineers all over the world are striving to create simple solutions to some of the largest problems around the globe. Although technology greatly aids humanity it also presents humanity with new hardships that often come with learning how to navigate the new advancements. Information Technology’s Effects on Personal Relationships

...Information Technology’s Effects on Personal Relationships In today’s society, why would we necessarily see each other in person when we have cell phones, tablets, desktop or laptop computers? Additionally, how about productivity software and software games for gaming consoles and of course, the computers. When you look around almost everywhere in public and in countless homes today, how much more evidence does someone need to realize that our world as we know it has been bombarded with information technology. By all appearances, information technology is headed toward replacing personal and social interactions or close to it. It is somewhat disturbing how many people go to restaurants now days with others and spend more time on their cell phone than speak with the people they are at the table with. How many of us have witnessed a group of friends sitting around and seemingly paying more attention to their iPods, cell phones or the like ? The family dinner hour has turned into eating when you can or eat when you want to. Of course not every household is like this but, how many really are? Now let us talk about the behaviors that are caused by information technology. Who hasn’t been in a public place where someone is talking on their phone? Is it just me, or is there a rudeness involved in many of these situations? Yes there are expectations of people we run across where we are out and about but, some people are just plain out rude...

Psychology of Child Development

...Television and Child Development By Gabriel Pitaro For my book report I chose the book Television and Child Development by Judith Van Evra. In her writing Van Evra delves into the increased presence of media and technology amongst children in todays society and the effects it is having on their development. She breaks it down into four different categories, physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. Throughout the book Evra explores the ways in which media actually effects children as well as the other variables that come into play in the development of a child. By doing all of this research her goal is to find ways to maximize technology’s potential for improving development while neutralizing the negative effects as much as possible. Her research spans well beyond television, observing the effects video games, DVDs, cell phones and the Internet have on children as well. Overall I found it to be a very compelling book that had many strong connections to the material we learned in this course. Evra begins her book by reviewing previous findings and theories about psychology and child development. Many of the theories she covers are ones that we have also reviewed in our course. She discusses Bandura and his theory of model behavior as it applies to television. Bandura conducted a study where two groups of children would watch an adult act aggressively towards a doll before being given a chance to interact with the doll themselves. For one group, the adult was...

...part of their life, but are rather dependent on them. There is legitimacy in arguing that modern technology including the internet and smartphones are essential components for effective integration and advancement; however, the internet itself came to be in an age where internet and smartphones ceased to exist. Hence, such modern revolutions simply enhance efficiency but do not necessarily determine/limit progress or potential achievement. Technology can be an effective tool when used properly; however, the 21st –century human being’s over-dependency on technology has negative consequences as it is analogous to drug addiction: both are addictive, are hazardous to one’s health, and cause isolation. Within today’s technology-driven society, consumers are finding the notion of constant technology use appealing. The Mariam-Webster dictionary defines the word ‘Addict’ as “to devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively” (Mariam-Webster). Both technology and drugs provide endless stimuli opportunities which stimulate the production of dopamine, thus creating a satisfying experience. Therefore both technology and drugs have potential to create addictive consumers. Psychologists...

What Does It Mean to Be Human in an Age of Modern Technology?

...and humanistic nature of our society. Most all do agree that technology has certainly played a role in humanity’s social and behavioral progress throughout history. However, to what extent technology really drives the development of our social and behavioral changes can elicit a heated discussion. Humans are driven, curious creatures that seek to solve problems and have a need for social interactions. As well they desire some form of system of belief (though not necessarily religious in nature) and aspire to be part of something collective or feel a sense of purpose to life. Countless studies provide that human behavior arises out of the interaction between individuals and their environment. Although environments do influence human behavior, many contend the basic tenets of humanity such as compassion, the need to have connected relationships and the desire to improve upon our lives have not changed in the face of technology. However, it is clear that human attitudes and expectations today are certainly very different than even several generations ago. Much of which, is a direct result of technological exposure and availability. Without question, technology and humanity have a tremendous influence and effect on each other. Some advocate technology and humanity have become entirely interdependent and interconnected. James Burke and Robert Ornstein’s book, The Axemaker’s Gift, discusses how humanity has used technology to shape our society for the last 120,000 years. Their...

...Issues related to technology’s presence in our lives "The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do". (B. F. Skinner) Technology advancements has been both a blessing and a curse, the benefits of faster, simpler and better has caused society to not only be physically lazy but mentally lazy as well. Society tends to rely on technology probably more than they should, remote control vacuums, talking refrigerators, and controlling appliances from miles away has taken away just small chunks of brain power, but as technology continues to evolve, those chunks keep adding up and soon humans won’t need to use their brains for much of anything. While technological developments have made life amazingly easier, simpler and anything is just a mouse's click away, it has brought several negative health impacts, psychological problems and stress in daily life. Furthermore, the presence of technology in the world today has created many benefits and issues in almost every facet of life. For instance, in Business, companies are much more productive due to the various advancements in communication. Company provided cell phones, email and instant messenger are just a few of the ways that colleagues, bosses and customers can communicate, allowing instant access and quicker results. One of the newer advancements that I have used recently is called “Telepresence”, which is real-time video conferencing that has the effect of people literally being in the room together when...
