Informational interviews are a key networking tool for students. Learning on how an informational interview works should be an integral part of your networking and career exploration. An informational interview involves talking with professionals that are currently working in the field, and it helps you build a better understanding of their daily occupations and industry. Furthermore, it helps you build a big network of contacts from an early age. I had the pleasure of conducting 2 informational interviews. The first one was with Miss.N, she’s currently working as a manager at Motors. The second informational interview was with Mr.R, currently working for H as a of Sales. The key six learning points/observations I learned from this incredible experience were.

1) Job openings are sometimes not publicly advertised, but information is rather expressed by word of mouth.
2) The company that you select needs to fit your personality and aspirations.
3) Informational interviews are a way to build a relationship and expand your network, not necessarily a way to get a job.
4) An informational interview will help you have a better understanding of a particular industry and career.
5) The interviewees have lots of knowledge and were in your shoes a few years ago.
6) Always follow-up with a thank you note.

During my first informational interview I came into the realization that most job openings were not publicly advertised, but they were rather spread by word of mouth. After further research I found out that only about 15% of all available jobs are ever publicly advertised. The majority of jobs openings are hidden to the public and are only available through networking. This is when I discovered that networking was by far the most effective tool to find a job.

Also, the company that you select to work for needs to fit your personality and future dreams. To build a successful career you usually need to stay at one place for at least 2 years. If you make the wrong decision of working for a company that you don’t really fit in, it can be devastating for your future success. As Miss.H stated “do you want to be a fish in a pond or a fish in an ocean” it all depends on you.

You shouldn’t conduct an informational interview thinking that its a way of finding a job, indeed it could land you a job. But you should go with the mentality of building a social relationship with your interviewee and expanding your working network. “It is not just what you know; it is also about who you know.” An informational interview is not the same as a job interview, but it is probably the most effective form of networking and the biggest aid in landing your dream job.

The interviewee will usually be a professional in the industry or field you want to be in. This person has the experience and knows the best ways to break into the career field. With his knowledge the interviewee will help you develop a better understanding about a particular industry or job. But most importantly if the informational interview is conducted properly it will help you develop a very strong ally inside your dream company.

The most valuable learning point of this experience was the importance of a thank-you letter. The thank-you letter is a really effective way to keep in touch with the interviewee and be remembered for a longer period of time. It was also a good way of letting them know how helpful they were to you and further strengthened the relationship. When I write a thank-you letter I usually quote something they said to show them that what they shared had a great impact on me.
