Chances are, you know someone with glasses or contacts. Many of you probably use vision correction yourself. In fact, three out of four people in the United States have vision correction (“Vision Impact Institute...” Essilor). This means that at least three out of four people see an optometrist. Optometrists are doctors of optometry and are commonly known as eye doctors. These doctors treat and diagnose problems with eye health and vision. Doctors of Optometry see a variety of patients and have many responsibilities throughout the day; this job requires extra schooling but seems to be well worth it. Special testing, instruments, and eye charts are things they do everyday to evaluate eyes. Doctors of Optometry have not always been around, though. The roots of medicine start in the prehistoric times, when people thought diseases were from super natural powers. Optometry is specialized field in medicine, and in three thousand B.C., ancient egyptians first introduced specialized fields. Diviners also studied the individual characteristics of the eye in the past. In the nineteenth century, curious Europeans started to test and measure the eye. In 1897, the National Association of Optometrists was created. Minnesota was the first state to pass laws regulating the practice of optometry, in 1901. Optometry has evolved over the years, and this special career requires specific schooling. In high school, future optometrists will need to attain good grades while making sure they complete the required credits. Students entering this field should work especially hard in math and science.
