Purpose: To inform my audience about the Susan G Komen Foundation.

I. Introduction: A. Attention Getter: * According to www.thebreastcancersite/greatergood/Ashley Oliver Story. “Sitting in class, my phone rings, it’s the doctor’s office. I jump up anxious to finally rid my mind of worry. From the other end of the phone I hear, “You have breast cancer.” Everything goes dark. Shock followed by a full on panic attack….wait, what? Me? No way, I’m 27…I have 2 kids… Oh no my kids… my husband, I have to tell him… This must be a mistake, dear God please let it be a mistake! This is a small window into my mind when I answered the call no one ever wants to receive. I underwent chemotherapy weekly from March to July and I continue every three weeks until March 2015. Due to unexpected complications I will be having surgery number 4 this week, followed by a few more. I never knew how strong I was until I had to fight for my life, not only my life but the life of my children’s mother, my husband’s wife, my parent’s daughter. * According to the Susan G Komen Foundation (ww5.komen.org) there is a total of 2,360 males and 232,670 females that will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. B. Orienting Material: * In 1982 Nancy Brinker, the sister of Susan G Komen, started the foundation as a promise to her sister as she was dying from breast cancer. Ms. Brinker promised that she would never stop fighting for a cure. The group was launched in Texas. * Susan G Komen Foundation is the largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit with providing real-time help to those facing the disease. * Since its founding in 1982, Komen has funded more than $800 million in research, and has provided $1.7 billion to screening, education, treatment, and psychosocial support. Serves millions in more than 30 countries worldwide. * Susan G. Komen Foundation is the voice for more than 3 million breast cancer survivors and those who love them, working to ensure that breast cancer is a priority among policymakers.

C. Thesis Statement:
As stated on encyclopedia.com 2006 version: The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is the number one leading advocacy group in the fight against breast cancer.

D. Preview: Today I will: 1. Tell you how the Susan G. Komen Foundation serves our community. 2. Tell you who assists with this organization. 3. Explain how Susan G. Komen Foundation is funded. 4. And finally, tell you about the many locations.
Transition: I’ll begin by telling you how the Susan G. Komen Foundation serves our community.

II. Body: A. First point: Services provided 1. Serves for breast cancer research a. Clinical trials—a scientist who operates a research lab spends $50,000 to $500,000 each year on equipment and salaries, and $20,000 per year for materials used in the lab. Cancer cells for just one experiment ranges from $300 to $500, and the specialized solution is as much as $800. b. Young and emerging scientists—per a quote by Dr. George Sledge, Komen Chief Scientific Advisor: “Without Komen funding we would lose the next generation of breast cancer researchers.” c. Bringing the patient voice to research—a volunteer based group who work to reduce the burden of breast cancer in their communities by ensuring that the unique and valuable perspectives of breast cancer patients, survivors, and co-survivors are integrated into the scientific dialogue and decisions, they educate others about research.

2. Services for breast cancer patients, survivors, or co-survivors a. The Komen Breast Care Helpline—offers free breast cancer support and counseling to anyone with questions or concerns (1-877-GO KOMEN or helpline@komen.org). b. National Treatment Assistance Program—help to fund this organization to assist medically underserved individuals undergoing treatment. c. Assistance & Support—funded programs that help those facing financial challenges by providing services such as treatment, transportation, child care, legal aid and more.

3. Serves with support resources a. Message Boards—offer online forums for breast cancer survivors to share their experiences and advice with other breast cancer survivors b. Co-survivor section—has a detailed information and resource area for family and friends c. Family, Friends, and Caregivers forum—offers co-survivors a place to share their own unique experiences and challenges that they face day to day in helping the breast cancer patient d. Fact sheets, booklets, and other educational materials—offers additional information to survivors and co-survivors

4. Serves as an Advocacy a. Protecting federal and state funding for National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, to ensure all women have access to potentially lifesaving breast cancer screening. b. Ensuring continued federal investment in cancer research through the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and Department of Defense, to discover and deliver cures. c. Requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for oral anti-cancer drugs on a basis that is no less favorable than what’s already provided for intravenously-administered chemotherapy, to protect patients from high out-of-pocket costs. d. Expanding Medicaid coverage to ensure the availability of the full range of breast health services to low-income women, including cancer screening, diagnostics, and treatments

Transition: Next, I will talk to you about who assists with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to provide these services. B. Second Point: As I said before, the Susan G Komen Foundation has millions of members who assist as officers, employees, advocates, and volunteers.

1. Employees- personnel hired to perform specialized duties in fields such as a. Key leaders—President and CEO (Judith A Salerno, M.D.,M.S.), Nancy G Brinker (Founder and Chair of Global Strategy), Linda Custard (Chair of the Board of Directors) b. Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer—Norm Bowling c. General Counsel (Ellen Willmott) d. Board of Directors e. Affiliate Network (VP Miguel Perez)

2. Mission Team—composed of the best and brightest researchers, clinicians, advocates and other experts who help guide and implement the mission. a. Scientific Advisory Board—helps to prioritize the global research investment. b. Komen Scholars—advisory group of 60 distinguished leaders in breast cancer research and advocacy. They contribute to the programs activities and events in many ways, most notably the scientific peer review process. This group also acts as the ambassadors in communities around the U.S. and the world. c. Advocates in Science Steering Committee—comprised of seven advocates who have demonstrated their dedication and leadership in breast cancer advocacy. This committee works closely with the Komen staff to develop the strategy of the AIS program, expand its community of members and leverage the benefits of effective breast cancer research.

3. Affiliate Network Team Leaders—made up of survivors, volunteers, businesses, and celebrities dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. This is the nation’s largest private funder of community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening/treatment programs.
Transition: Now that I have explained who we are, I will tell how the Susan G. Komen Foundation is funded. C. Third Point: The Susan G. Komen Foundation receives its operating funds primarily from affiliates, donations and fundraising. 1. Affiliates—The foundation has more than 100 affiliates, which retained up to 75% of the funds they raised for local education and screening a. American Airlines b. Ford c. New Balance d. 3. Fundraising A. Race for the Cure—a series of 5K runs and fitness walks raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. a. In 1983 first race in Dallas, TX with 800 runners b. In 2014 more than 1.6 million participants, 13 international races in 8 countries, with more than 150 races globally c. Would not be possible without the help of nearly 100,000 volunteers. B. Rally for the Cure—Is a grassroots program that works to educate women about breast cancer and to remind them to get their annual screening through volunteer organized golf, tennis, and social activities a. Since 1996 Rally has enlisted over 35,000 volunteer Ambassadors to champion breast cancer awareness b. The Ambassadors have helped to educate over two million people about the importance of early detection c. As of 2014 Rally events have generated over $73 million for Susan G. Komen Foundation C. Celebrities—Celebrities either make a monetary donation to Susan G. Komen Foundation, or they help with things such as concerts. a. Jason Aldean—Just this year, Mr. Aldean had a concert on October 11, 2014 and raised over $600,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Jason Aldean says, “It isn’t about raising money to help find a cure, it’s also about celebrating everyone who is going through treatment now and those who’ve been able to beat the disease.” Aldean started doing this after a family friend died of breast cancer. b. Angelina Jolie—gives a monetary donation each year. c. Courtney Cox—donated a pair of jeans for auction and also provides monetary donations d. Bob Saget—volunteered and walked in a Race for the Cure, and also provides monetary donations.
Transition: These Susan G. Komen Foundation funds help provide services in many locations. D. Fourth Point: The Susan G. Komen Foundation has many locations that help with the services. 1. United States headquarters is located in Dallas, Texas 2. Internationally located in Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Europe 3. Every state has an affiliate site for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Transition: The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is the number one leading advocacy group in the fight against breast cancer. III. Conclusion: A. The Susan G. Komen Foundation serves the community in a variety of different ways, by funding research, educating, being an advocate, and by offering the correct places to ask for help/support as being the survivor, co-survivor, or family and friends of a survivor in the time of need B. Remember Ashley Oliver from the beginning, Ashley said, “There have been times during my battle I have shown courage and times I’ve shown weakness. Times I wanted to give up and times nothing could stop me. The love around me has kept me going. Going into this, I told myself that failure was not an option. I deserve this life and nothing, especially not cancer, is going to keep me from raising my children and living my life.”
