...Online Learning: Characteristics and Approaches to Managing Learning INFT 101 Have you recently decided to go back to college and earn your degree or further your education? Have you thought that maybe online courses may be the right choice for you? Maybe you feel you don’t have the discipline to stay focused and motivated if you take courses the less traditional way and opt to study online. Well, I have read an article that explains the online approach and the learner characteristics and approaches. The curriculum that is offered for distance learners has really grown this past decade. Universities find that distance education really is looked at fondly and more individuals are choosing to further their education by using the online learning tools. The majority of people have said it’s very beneficial to both students and schools. Others will argue that online learning has many disadvantages but the online curriculum has grown tremendously. Online learning definitely has its advantages. The advantage that is most often talked about is convenience. A student can work around their own schedule and can work from almost anywhere that offers computer or internet access. Online learning can also be a little easier on your bank account since the tuition is oftentimes lower since you avoid residential costs as well as the cost to commute. Online learning can also have its downfalls. A student that may be interested in the social aspect of the...

...Shaleigh Williams INFT 101-B60 LUO March 6, 2013 Summary In the article “Adult learning Disorders: Contemporary Issues” the authors discuss a book that is made of 4 different parts: Development, Neurobiology and Specific Learning Disorders, Diagnosis and Assessment, and Life Outcomes. Throughout the article they break down those different parts into what each one actually means. The article “Adult Learning Theory for the Twenty-First Century” discusses the ways that adult learning and all of its theories change and have changed over time and how drastically they have changed. The first part, Development, discusses different theories for understanding different adult learning disorders. Those chapters talk about how some learning disorders may have sex-related differences among the disorders. It also discusses how certain adults with a variety of learning disabilities might have atypical brain development. If a person that is determining a disability uses a model of an atypical brain development, it could possibly help them better understand a need for a very flexible plan of treatment. The second part, Neurobiology and Specific Learning Disorders, explains a case where a graduate student who is high functioning was having a lot of issues keeping up with the extraneous amounts of reading and work even though he is very intelligent because he was not able to absorb the information. It also discusses the problems that adults with nonverbal learning disabilities, especially...

While we do not know how many years we will be granted here on Earth, we do know that everyone has the same 24 hours each day, with 168 hours each week. The busiest person utilizes the same amount of time each day as the least accomplished person who only manages to spend the day on the couch, watching TV or playing computer games! What does your current use of time indicate about you? This activity will help you see how much time you truly have left to “manage” once you determine what time you currently have committed to your daily activities and tasks. Learning Styles Responce Draft

...LaNesha Cameron October 24, 2013 INFT 101 “We have two ears and one Mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” (Epictetus, 2009)There are a multitude of different learning styles. Auditory learning focuses on many aspects and learning strategies. These strategies include learning by listening to other, listening to feedback, the adoration to ask questions and listen for explanations, and the ability to discuss text when mastering difficult information. Through the Learning Styles Assessment I was surprised to discover that I am an auditory learner. I would have thought myself to be a visual learner. Although listening plays a big part in my ability to learn and comprehend information I also think that it is important to have a visual image, whether it is physical or imaginative. As listening and having a visual image are important so are the strategies that are suggested for this learning style. Learning by listening to others via speech, lecture, and informative recordings have been proven to be successful strategies. This is by far my favorite along with listening to feedback. Feedback is the modification of a person’s performance used as a foundation for improvement. This technique is often in the form of an interview, one on one conferences, and oral surveys. Another one of my favorite strategies is the Q&A method. It has all to do with asking questions and listening to explanations. This method can be found in mentoring...

Adult Learning and Gaming Engagement

...Game Engagement Theory and Adult Learning Jesika A. Johnson INFT 101 9/9/2013 Throughout the article, authors provide information to debate if the theory of game engagement, when applied to learning, can be an effective tool. There are different types of theories developed to prove whether the application of gaming for learning is useful or not even suitable. To quote Benyon, Turner, and Turner (2005), engagement is described as being concerned with all the qualities of an experience that really pull people in. Now, these experiences are not limited to the world of gaming but to all aspects of a person’s life; embracing challenge and imagination. In using imagination and game engagement, a person can feel “a sense of authenticity, adaptation and immersion to create an experience of flow” (Benyon 2005). Flow is a theory developed to prove that there are elements in engagement that increase how “enjoyable, engaging, and immersive that experience is” (Whitton 2011). While some argue that this theory is effective, there has also been research to discredit the benefits of game engagement to learning. This research proves that game engagement has an impact on a person including difficulty navigating throughout, boredom and frustration; although this isn’t true of all people who attempt game engagement with learning. As the article provides more than enough information to make ones’ own debate, there is clearly more research to be provided in determining whether all learners...

Learning Styles Essay

...Understanding Kinesthetic Learning Breanna Waller September 26, 2013 INFT 101 As I was making my way through the Learning Styles Assessment, I knew right off the bat which learning style I would learn more towards. Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic are the three more prominent learning styles. Auditory learning is when someone uses as much auditory learning as possible. For instance, reading out loud to get a better understanding. Visual learners usually sit closer to the front of the classroom and make things more colorful to stand out. Being a Kinesthetic learner, I understand that being able to move around is almost necessary to stay focused. Learning more about each learning style, I have been able to identify that I am a kinesthetic learner because it is essential to be able to practice what it is I have learned and be active and constantly apart of what is going on in order to gain a better comprehension of my studies. After going through the Learning Styles Assessment, it is clear that I am a kinesthetic learner. It definitely matches my personality. I think going through this assessment to be able to get a clearer understanding of how my learning style works was really great. Comparing my results to have I know I already learn what interesting to say the least. I noticed there were many similarities and there were also different ways to learn that may be more helpful. I have noticed that during my time with online learning, I have to be seated in an...

The Meaning of Life

...Jeremy Halladay INFT 101 6 March 2014 Academic Honesty Academic honesty has been an ever growing problem within the education community. It starts from grade school and continues on through the rest of the student’s lives as well as the work place. No more than ever before has there been more pressure to perform at a higher level in school and some students will go to extreme lengths to just get a decent grade. As you well know academic honesty is a big thing when completing assignments and test in college. But honesty comes down to the core of who we are, from are family’s to are work place. It creates an invisible untrustworthy factor between the student and professor. It basically comes down to cheating, which means to use another person’s ideas or answers for your own. It’s also known as intellectual theft. Academic honesty is not a victimless crime, and you may wonder why, but it has many factors. Taking credit for something that isn’t yours or stealing it can actually put you in jail. Students these days have a lot of pressure on them, which causes them to resort to desperate measures. Some other reasons is because they lack the knowledge or skill for the course or they are just plain lazy. One last thing is that they didn’t even know they were cheating at all because they didn’t use proper citation. One thing I have learned from this article is that, I didn’t know it was as widespread as I initially thought, which really surprised me. The conclusions of the article...

Learning Styles

...Katy Frerich October 25, 2013 INFT 101 – C08 Learners acquire knowledge in many different ways. To be a strong learner is to take ownership in understanding and take responsibility for your specific style. We know that knowledge is power. To become a successful learner is to understand your individual learning style and use it accordingly. There are many tools available to help learners determine which learning style is most useful for their success. There are three different types of basic styles: visual, auditory or kinesthetic. In researching and learning about the three main learning styles, it is clear that I am a strong kinesthetic learner with tendencies towards a visual learner. I learn best when I understand the importance of the material presented, by touching, doodling and highlighting my materials. These results resonate well with me and I actually find it very intriguing based on my childhood. I was raised in a deaf family. My house was silent and we of course used our hands and body language to communicate. My visual senses and hands on approach to life has been completely enlightened by this culture that I grew up in and I believe it molded the way that I prefer to learn. Kinesthetic learners take in education “by doing”, feeling, sensing and touching. This style of learner likes to jump in to the activity to take it all in, typically unable to sit still, likes to fidget and move around. Kinesthetic learners do best when able to actually do...
