...Innovation, Creativity and Design Goals and objectives are important to a successful strategy of any business. Innovation, creativity, and design are tools that enable us to build an idea or product able to generate income for an organization. Understanding which attribute is most important is difficult without first defining each one to realize how they interact with one another. Definitions “Creativity is the act of generating an idea and is done by an individual, not a team,” (Von Stamm, 2008). In addition to this understanding, Von Stamm further states, “Creativity alone, to come up with ideas, is not enough. In order to reap the benefits, one needs to do something with it” (p. 3). Innovation is left described as creativity plus the successful execution in the marketplace of the idea. Govindarajan (2010) takes that definition even further by stating, “Innovation is creativity multiplied by execution. Multiplication is used rather than sum because, if either creativity or execution has a score of zero, then the capacity for innovation is zero” (para. 2). When defining innovation, one could use Von Stamm’s description or Govidarajan’s account; either way creativity clearly comes first. It is becoming clear, however, that creativity is useless without the innovation to bring the idea to life. The third attribute is design, which simply put, is the process used to execute the original idea. This basic level of understanding of the three attributes is important to the success...

...Innovation, Creativity, and Design Jerry Vaval Prof. Dr. Milena Loubeau Week 1 Being an employee of a very large and historical organization practicing innovation is something I focus on to make a difference in my organization. This paper will briefly define, compare, and contrast innovation, creativity, and design. On the "Merriam-Webster" (2014) website one of the definitions for innovation is “the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods”. Webster defines design as “to plan and make something for specific use or purpose”. Creativity is defined as “the ability to create” according to Webster. These coined terms are heard in the boardrooms, in the staff meetings, and in the marketing and advertising campaigns, so it is important to understand their meaning. Creativity Creativity is coming up with ideas and is the essential building block of innovation. Use of force or mandate does not allow for creativity, as creativity is usually a product of intuition. Following the creation of a new idea, the implementation takes place. Design Design can be defined as “the conscious decision-making process by which information is transformed into an outcome, be it tangible or intangible” (Stamm, 2003, p. 12). Essentially, design is taking the idea from the creativity stage and making it become reality. The successful implementation of a creative design then becomes innovation. Innovation Once the idea has been made, and the process by which to implement the idea has been designed, then the product or service has arrived at innovation. Stamm’s defines innovation as “the art of making new connections, and continuously challenging the statues quo – without changing for change sake” (2003, p. 7). Stamm further mentions that innovation is a state of mind...
