...and internal environmental factors that have strategic implications for Apple’s future. This paper will further explain how Apple’s strategy stands up against industry rivalry. In closing we will provide recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of the company’s strategy or to change its strategic approach for better results. Key Strategic Challenges facing Apple Computer Apple Computer, INC. We will describe the key strategic challenges facing Apple Computer. We will start with services which contribute minimally to Apple’s revenue but provide enormous influence. Content pricing power- Jobs told Mossberg that digital content can be sold when it’s priced for volume. The success of iTune’s .99 per song pricing demonstrates this but doing so also destroyed the music industry’s business model. Without album pricing, musician royalties and major labels CD revenue have dried up. Regression to the mean- As companies grow, their courage and capacity to “Think Different” abates. ...follows determination and courage in business. Apple Inc. is one of global giants that has proved this correct – it has completely taken a U-turn in the IT business. Renowned around the world for innovation and quality finishing of its products, Apple Inc.’s humble start as a computer manufacturer has not deterred it from ruling the world of technology and entertainment in a market where giant names like IBM and Microsoft also thrive. The financial position of Apple has become very strong over the past three years. Growing 15% from 2007 to 2008 and 20% from 2008 to 2009, Apple Inc. has maintained a steady and rapid pace that few other companies as innovative as Apple can match (Annual Report, 2009, p.19). The launch of the iTunes music store, that later expanded into a comprehensive online store for videos, books and audios, was a different business model altogether that reaped success within the first week of its launch. However, the subsequent events that occurred in the market and the various risks that are associated with Apple Inc.’s strategy for iTunes are some of the reasons that warrant a revision of the operational strategy, partially, if not altogether. The issue of digital rights management (DRM) and software piracy propped up and Apple has ever since paid out to artists and record companies more than it has pocketed itself. There are several lessons that Apple can learn from the launch of iTunes. The decrease in music sales online is an important one that...

Is the strategy evolving?   Leading the industry in innovation has been the main strategy at Apple.   The new products that Apple has introduced over the past decade have kept them out front of their competitors. Engineering

...Overview The smartphone industry consists of all companies that manufacture and sell smartphones to consumers. This industry is a massive, fast paced environment where products are constantly updating and changing. It is characterized by quickly evolving technology and designs, short product life cycles, aggressive pricing, rapid imitation of product and technological advancements, and highly price-sensitive consumers (Aviram, 2010)between the ages of 18-49, who have at least some college education and make $50,000 or more annually [see Appendix A]. The Problems The nature of the smartphone industry carries with it the continuous problems of short product lifecycles, rapid technological advancements, a decreasing new user market base, a large presence of imitations and substitutions, and numerous barriers of entry – such as stiff competition and strong brand loyalty. These problems require companies to be constantly and consistently ahead of current trends and consumer demands in order to produce the “latest” products in a timely manner. The Objectives In order to combat the problem of rapid technological changes, companies need to focus their attention on innovation, research and development, and become so attuned to consumer characteristics and values that they can predict their wants and needs ahead of the consumer. When addressing the issue of the declining new user market base, companies can produce smartphones geared toward the demographics of those who aren’t in the current...

Apple's Challenges

...Key Strategic Challenges facing Apple Computer C. Meyer (2011) commented in his article by saying “It’s hard to get headlines with 5% market share. When your market capitalization passes Microsoft, everyone watches. For a firm that highly values control and secrecy, Apple now stands center-stage with the flood lights shining bright.” Although many are quick to focus on a company’s weaknesses, most winners lose their step by over relying on their strengths. Apple’s success has been fueled by a very distinctive point-of-view embodied in elegantly designed “insanely great products” that deliver a superior experience to users. Apple has wrung more out of secrecy and anticipation of its next products than most companies achieve through advertising. As the recent Gizmodo pre-release scoop of the iPhone 4 demonstrates, this gets harder to do the bigger you are. According to Meyer (2010), he examined seven challenges facing Apple leaders. 1) Security- With just 5% market share in the PC market, malware and virus writers have mostly ignored the Mac. However, Apple’s iPhone success now makes them a target that coincides with the explosion of mobile security concerns overall. Lacking strong experience in the enterprise computing where security is paramount, it’s reasonable to expect more problems such as the recent AT&T email address breach on the iPad. 2) High control- Several years ago, Steve Jobs said Apple wasn’t going to do a phone because it had to be sold...
