Communication between healthcare providers, and patients and patients’ families, is one of the most important aspects on the healthcare field. Pierre Elias, who is a medical student at Duke University School of Medicine and served as a TEDMED research scholar, and with the thoughts and guidance of the physician Bob Wachter, wrote an article entitled “Insensible Losses: When The Medical Community Forgets The Family” reporting a case of a patient whose health suddenly deteriorates, and he had to deliver difficult news to a family whom no one has time for. Healthcare providers often focus on patients’ conditions, when they are transferring them from site to site, or from unite to another, and they give little focus on updating the families. Nonetheless, he argues that in order to improve the healthcare field, and to prevent the occurrence of what happened to Laura and Steve’s case, the joint commission should take an action. They should put new policies, educational efforts, and, most of all, a change in culture, he states that “Updating such resources to include family debriefing is much needed. Most importantly, we need to instill a culture that both champions the needs of families in crisis and ensures that people witnessing an error in the making are empowered to speak up before it is too late”(Elias, 1). Speaking personally, as I am seeking to become a healthcare provider, I agree that putting more communication courses for healthcare providers curriculums, would have a good impact on all people involved in any situation.
