People from all over the world have had to become refugees because of war, natural disasters, and many other hardships. In the novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, ten year old Ha has endured things no child should ever have to deal with. Ha’s experiences are similar to some other refugees’ experiences while fleeing their homes. In the article, ¨Refugee Children in Canada” by Ana Fantino and Alice Colak, they describe some of the things children from Canada have gone through. Even though Ha and her family are refugees from Saigon, Vietnam, the refugee children from Canada also experienced most of the things that Ha went through. In addition, refugees have many struggles and hardships in their transition to a different country, but …show more content…
In a new community, most refugees have lost a family member or something else that they cared about. In the article ¨Refugee Children in Canada¨, Fantino and Colak describe how, ¨some have lost many members of their families and many have lost everything that was familiar to them¨ (590). The authors write about how children have witnessed killings and other traumas. Refugees mourn what they have had to leave behind. Like the refugee children in Canada, Ha thinks about losing her father, ¨Mostly, I wish Father would appear in our doorway and make Mother’s lips curl upward, lifting them from a permanent frown of worries.¨ (Lai 31). Ha does not know if her father is alive or dead, so she wishes and hopes for him to one day return and make her mother happy again. Later, in America, Ha’s mother tells her, ¨Your father is truly gone¨ (Lai 250). Ha no longer has to wonder where he is or if he is alive, but now knows he is dead. War took her father's life, like many other refugee families. All of these refugees have lost something important to them, and mourn what they have lost, but they can still move on with their …show more content…
Even though they have lost so much, refugees can adapt and accept the change in their lives. ¨One key factor in determining success is the... reception by the host community society.¨ (Fantino and Colak 590). The refugees will not be happy or successful if the people in their community do not accept them and where they came form. When people bully and discriminate against refugees, it affects their learning and being able to adapt to their environment. Therefore, the people that are kind to refugees, give them the confidence and reassurance that they are accepted and can start building their life again. Like the refugees from Canada, Ha has used the kindness from her tutor to accept that her now different life, will never be the same as Saigon, but can still be a great one. Ha received pouches of dried papaya, because her tutor knew that she missed her papaya tree from Saigon. Ha did not like the ¨chewy, sugary, waxy, sticky¨ papaya, but later her mother boiled them in water to make them seem fresher, and she says, ¨Not the same, but not bad at all.¨ (Lai 234). Ha now knows that her life will be different know, but that is okay. Another example of Ha accepting difference is when she thinks, ¨I truly learn to fly- kick, not to kick anyone so much as to fly.¨ (Lai 260). This shows Ha has changed because instead of fighting against the change and

...Ha, like many refugees around the world has to face challenges that cause them to feel inside out, such as danger and fear. In the book Inside Out & Back Again, Ha says,(Lai,63) “Everyone knows the ship can sink.” Consequently, the amount of people on the ship is making the amount of danger and fear rise. Still, the author is giving a sense of fear and danger when he writes,(Shapiro) “The Kirk would be headed into hostile territory by itself.” In fact, the Kirk is alone and headed into uncharted waters, and the chances of getting demolished by the communists is going up by the second. A different perspective from Ha was, (Lai,63) “Bodies cram…” My analysis of the quote is, the amount of bodies aboard the ship is making the chances of getting...

Inside Out And Back Again Analysis

...around the world, refugees’ lives have been crushed and heartbroken due to many catastrophic, events. These people when they flee leave behind almost all their possessions in search of a new, fresh life in another country. These asylum seekers flee due to war, persecution, and natural disasters. Abandoning their items and loved ones can be heartbreaking and can turn refugees’ lives “inside out”. Fourchantly, they can turn “back again” by resettling adequately with the support from the people around them; which is the same situation for Hà in Inside Out & Back Again. Back in Hà’s home country of South Vietnam, she used to be the normal, cheerful girl growing up in a time of war. She used to often delicious foods either through special occasions or by her being very cunning and selfish; also, everyday Hà observed her beloved papaya tree that she did not even intend to plant. However, with her mother making the bold, life...

...day, Bruno peeked through his new bedroom’s window and saw what he think was a farm. He then asked his mother if he could play with the children at the farm. At first, his mother agreed to it but when he mentioned that something was strange about the people in the farm, his mother asked him what was it. Bruno answered that the people in the farm are all wearing pajamas. He also mentioned that their servant, named Pavel, is also wearing the odd clothing. That’s when it hit Bruno’s mother about what her son has seen which he shouldn’t have. It was not a farm. It was a Jewish concentration camp. What Is More Important: Our Privacy or National Security?

...Yosselin Gonzalez Professor Gautam 25 April 2016 Unfair Punishments In “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson speaks about a game that is played every year that ends in death. Over the years this small town got accustomed to playing the lottery. It is a game of fun to the women, the men, and the children even if it ends in death. “The Lottery takes the classic theme of man’s inhumanity to man and gives it an additional twist: the randomness inherent in brutality. It anticipates the way we would come to understand the twentieth century’s unique lessons about the capacity of ordinary citizens to do evil” (Franklin). “The Lottery is definitely compared to the twentieth century due to the fact that they have a tradition to play a tragic game every year. Also their is no upper hand to stop this game everyone plays it and feels no remorse. “Trifles” is a play about a woman who gets accused of murdering her husband. “Though the play is celebrated as an early feminist drama, it stands on its own as an engrossing story. In the tale, two women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, gradually uncover the motive for a murder, while their male counterparts are blinded by ignorance and insensitivity” (Jaworowski). The Attorney, Sheriff, a neighbor, and two of the men’s wives accompanied them to searched Mrs. Wrights house to see if they can find clues on why she would have murdered John Wright. The men enter the house with eyes of legal investigators while the two women enter the house with trying to understand...

New Edge Technology

...I sighed when I first saw the Samsung Galaxy S7 – it looks just like its predecessor, and yet again I was going to have to dig deep inside to find out whether the new features mean the new phone is worth the extra money it will cost if you choose it over 2015's Galaxy S6. I don't know why phone manufacturers back themselves into a corner like this – giving the public a reason to criticise their new device when it actually does pack some decent upgrades. If you look beyond the design similarities, Samsung has fixed nearly everything that was disappointing about the S6. The dropped waterproofing is back once again, with an IP68 rating. The battery has been boosted from 2550mAh to 3000mAh with little change in the dimensions. The microSD expandable memory is back. And you know what? The Galaxy S7 feels like a completely different phone in the hand thanks to the subtle curve on the back, taken from the Note 5. Imagine the sides from the S6 Edge's screen used on the rear, and you'll have an idea of what I mean. However, there's nothing that will stop people seeing the Galaxy S7 as a phone that's nothing more than the Galaxy S6S, a handset with the same feature set that comes with a microSD slot – and to a degree, they'd be right. It's now waterproof – well, I say now, but in reality this was already added into the Galaxy S5 before being stripped off to allow for the redesigned Galaxy S6. It's impressive to see a phone that's this well-crafted being able to be dunked...

Corporate Strategy Analysis

...Corporate Strategy Analysis Discussion Shelby Little MGT/230 May 4, 2015 Ronald Sprague Corporate Strategy Analysis Discussion This week the team discussed corporate strategies for the four corporations. We learned what makes these CEO’s the miracle workers they are. I have listed some of the things we discussed and some we did not. Coca Cola This week we discussed how Coca Cola’s CEO was very smart to keep the company a beverage only company. Unlike Pepsico, who has branched out into snacks and fast food, Coca Cola has chosen to merge with other beverage companies. Mr. Isdell chose to find a core group of individuals who wanted to be part of the rebranding of Coca Cola. He made these leaders owners in the corporation. He chose to develop coalitions from the inside out and follow through with them. His stance on productivity was very straightforward and he stood by it. He had an executive talent pool and used these persons as models for the future leaders in the corporation. All of these ideas moved Coca Cola in the forward direction again and has helped make it the company it is today. Xerox Anne Mulcahy became CEO as a suggestion by a former CEO. She had been with the company for many years and held several positions. She made several changes and made cuts without ever affecting the research and development department. Xerox was on the brink of disaster when Anne took over as CEO and she managed to pull them back from the brink and turn a profit. She came...

Real Time Hand Tracking for Human Computer Interaction

...Real-Time Hand Tracking for HumanComputer Interaction Ayush Tripathi, Kanishk Puri, Nilesh Srivastava, Prateek Dham (Students) Mrs S.S Dhotre(Professor) Computer Science Department Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering Pune, Maharashtra(India) Abstract- The proposed work is part of a project that aims for the control of a mouse based on hand gesture recognition. This goal implies the restriction of real-time response and unconstrained environments. This is basically a vision based skincolour segmentation method for moving hand in real time application [3]. This algorithm is based on three main steps: hand segmentation, hand tracking and gesture recognition from hand features. For the hand segmentation step we use the colour cue due to the characteristic colour values of human [1]. The hands are recognized by the computer using the skin colour as one of the basic features for the hand recognition. The important feature is the accurate segmentation of hands [3]. I. Introduction Nowadays, the majority of the human-computer interaction (HCI) is based on mechanical devices such as keyboards, mouse, joysticks or gamepads. In recent years there has been a growing interest in a class of methods based on computational vision due to its ability to recognise human gestures in a natural way .These methods use as input the images acquired from a camera or from a stereo pair of cameras. The main goal of these algorithms is to measure the hand configuration...

...Theme Analysis Prompt Are you pleased or satisfied of where you are from? Or would you change it? In the story, “Dark They Were and Golden Eyed” by Ray Bradbury, a character named Harry Bittering adapted to the lifestyle of becoming a Martian, or in other words, he changed his culture. In the article, ‘I Am From” by Alicia Bareno, Alicia is possibly an immigrant who refuses to forget her culture. In each of these texts, the characters or authors themself either lose a culture or holds onto one. Changing or keeping a culture changes who you are, inside and out. Changing a culture affects you because it determines what you look like and what you act like. ”Mr. Bittering gazed at the Earth settlement far way in the low valley. ‘Such odd, such ridiculous houses the Earth people built.” This quote from the text indicates that Mr. Bittering (and his family) are no longer accepting their culture they had when they were on Earth, that he is not even referring to himself. Because Mr. Bittering and his family drew away from their original culture, it has changed what they act and look like. “The town’s empty, but we found native life in the hills, sir. Dark people. Yellow eyes. Very friendly. We talked a bit, not much. They learn English fast. I’m sure our relations will be most friendly with them, sir.” Because the Bittering family was willing to lose their culture they became Martians. The story acts as a metaphor, because people are willing to give up a culture, they will become...

Cross-Cultural Management: An Overview

...Introduction: Back ground of cross cultural management: To understand what cross-cultural management is, it's good to examine the terms separately: cross-culture and management. Cross-culture might simply be understood literally, from one culture to another. Cross-culture could be a development born by market globalization; company goes out of their country to another to try and do business, brings their culture with the businesses to another culture, which means cross-culture. Every country has its own culture, it's perhaps almost like another one, and however they are not a similar. Culture is totally different by its contents and forms, 100 percent of which is what you'll be able to see, like language, behavior, and food and dressing, 90% make the most that is what you cannot see, like beliefs, values, and ways of thinking [Pu jing (2010)]. Cross-culture shows within the variations of the 10 visible and 90%invisible culture content. International organizations are a decent example of cross-culture; they are doing business internationally, anytime they enter into a new country, cross-culture happens with it. The first to introduce the term “intercultural communication” was Edward T. Hall who characterized it as "correspondence between two people of distinctive societies". The expression "Intercultural business correspondence" in the of world business is another presented term which may be characterized as the correspondence that happens inside of associations whereby there...

The Faithful Bull

...A Labovian Analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s The Faithful Bull Ernest Hemingway and his love of bullfighting require no formal introduction, however his short story, The Faithful Bull, is less well known. It is essentially a fable having been written for the child of a friend and published in 1951. Twenty-one years later, the famous linguist, William Labov laid out a framework outlining the progression of oral narratives in a six-part structure. The advantage of this Labovian method of analysis is that it can also be applied to literary narratives in general, not just to oral versions of personal experience. Using Hemingway’s 700-word fable, written in his inexorable, economic style and applying Labov’s six-part model (abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, result, coda), I intend to confirm the suitability of this form of analysis for the short story. The abstract of the narrative announces the initiation of a narrative and can, in effect, report the entire sequence of events, outlining the story. An abstract is not however an essential part of a narrative and can be omitted. A true explanatory abstract has no place in The Faithful Bull, it being a short story, but it does have a title. This three-word title does actually tell us very briefly what the story is about; a specific bull who is faithful and in this way, the title fulfils the norms of an abstract, albeit in a very transient way. It stimulates the addressees’ curiosity and focuses their...

The Broken Heart Analysis

...“The Broken Heart” Analysis In John Donne’s poem, “The Broken Heart”, Donne shows the predacious nature of love and the true faintness of the heart through the use of metaphors. This poem sets a mood of despair and sorrow; moods that reveal the regret of love. It opens the reader’s eyes to realize just how vulnerable the heart can be when dealing with love. Donne associates love with the negative; he portrays it as some evil entity that overtakes people without warning and, if not careful, destroys them from the inside, out. In the first stanza of Donne’s poem, he describes how long the oh-so-terrible phenomenon of love lasts. He compares it to the plague and claims it has stuck with him for an entire year. He states that anyone who claims to have only been in love an hour, or a short duration at all, “is stark mad.” Donne makes a clear point that love simply cannot decay so soon. He compares the duration of love to a flask of powder burning in one day. I assume that it would take quite some time to use an entire flask of powder given the context of the text [small amounts of gun powder was used in the 1700’s and 1800’s for guns each time they were to be fired, and unless one of the soldiers chambered every round as fast as a sub-machine gun, it is very unlikely that they would have gone through an entire flask in one day]. Stanza two reveals Donne’s ideas about the characteristics of love and the heart. He says that once the heart has fallen into the hands of love, it...
