Instructional Design and Process Flow for First-Line Supervisors at Thomas Company

SYSTEMATIC DESIGN APPROACH
The flow of processes of instructional design is based on the ADDIE model. The first step in the process is to analyze needs. Instructional Design cannot be carried out properly without first knowing the needs of the target audience. (Addie, n.d.) The design continues with design of the program, implementation of the program, and evaluation. There are paths included for stakeholders to provide feedback regarding changes in training needs and for the instructional design team to update with changes as needed.

FUNCTIONALITY AND RATIONALE
Human Resources gathers data at the beginning of the year and provides necessary information to the Division Managers, who process the data and determine needs for the new year. Gathering feedback from the Division Managers provides an opportunity to insure that training needs will be met by the Instructional Design team. There are multiple opportunities given for feedback, as instructional design is always a fluid process that never ends. (ADDIE: An Introduction, n.d.)
If there is no communication regarding data and needs between Human Resources (based at headquarters), and the Divisions, there could be a lack of continuity and consistency in training. Headquarters should be responsible for all training information that is to be learned company-wide. Each Division may have its own needs that must be addressed at the Division level; but, for a large company, it makes sense to consolidate as much common training as possible for the sake of costs. One way that costs may be cut is by eliminating Instructional Design positions at the Division level to a minimum number of positions while maintaining the bulk of the Instructional Design team at headquarters.

...------------------------------------------------- I strive to teach my high school students the value of criticism, especially when it comes to improving their writing. To do so, I model how criticism continues to help me become a better writer. Earlier this year, for example, I shared a draft of one of my education feature articles, which included detailed feedback from an editor at a prominent media company. I asked my classes for advice on how to address several edits, dealing with sources, transitions, terminology, and structure. A few days later, I directed my budding writers to the much-improved final draft.
