Instrumental conditioning is a process of learning that consists of reinforcement and punishment that is used to either increase or decrease the probability of a behavior that might occur in the future. Instrumental conditioning is a process that permits change in behavior depending on the individual’s environment. Children seem to have a difficult time learning the concept of punishment and reward. All behaviors are guided by consequences. Task such as tying your shoe or brushing your teeth twice a day or some of the first situations using instrumental conditioning in our youth. Learning simple task such as tying your show and brushing your teeth can be an easy or difficult process for a child. Instrumental learning is learning, according to Terry (2009), the connection, or piecing together the link between the behavior and its consequence.
Describe your selected learning situation
The learning situation that I will discuss is my evolution of making macaroni and cheese. Growing up the youngest of four girls I never had the chance to really cook for my family because it was always done for me. As a child I always wanted to participate in holiday dinners and I finally got the chance to when I was thirteen. My job was to make the macaroni and cheese for Thanksgiving. The goal of making macaroni and cheese is to make it tasty with the right amount of cheese. Doing a good job making the macaroni can be taught and influenced by reward and punishment in the learning process. The taste of the macaroni is an important part of task and in order to make it taste right the individual must follow steps to prepare it right. The first step in the process is to gather the ingredients which consist of butter, macaroni pasta and the desired cheese and milk. The second step is to boil the macaroni and drain the macaroni. The third step is to mix the melted butter with the cheese

Santucci 2 Introduction This paper proposes a new approach, or a new paradigm if you will, to instrumental instruction that combines the foundational principles of language, singing, and psychophysics (awareness of physiology and psychology). I argue that instrumental pedagogy and methodology should necessarily introduce, or in some cases reintroduce, the basic skills in question, using disciplines at every level of instruction. Below, I introduce the skills in question. Those same skills are often the offending skills when taken as parts instead of a whole and when ill-instructed. I introduce the skills using flute pedagogy as a demonstrative example, and discuss why their combined and concurrent application can develop instrumental students more holistically. I see deficiency in current instrumental instruction methods because they seem opposite to the human experience. We are all exposed to language and singing from birth, and on some level we gain awareness of physiology and psychology. Yet the fact that our early lives combine these experience naturally seems lost on traditional instrumental pedagogy.
