A. Complete a Project Design 1. Literature Review a. Physics of Paper Airplanes (www.exampleessays.com essay)
This paper is about the things needed to make a paper airplane fly. There are many things that contribute to a planes ability to fly. Some such things are weight, velocity, lift, and drag. Weight is relevant because the weight is directly related to gravity. In order to make the plane fly better it stands to reason that it needs to be lighter so that the pull of gravity will not be as great. Velocity is the initial push the plane gets when it is released. The greater push it is given the longer it will stay in flight. Velocity is directly affected by drag, which is the friction in the air that it is flying through. The lift is what keeps the plane flying and is created when flow is present. Flow is a current of air that is either flowing with or against the airplane, and this direction affects how far the airplane will fly (www.exampleessays.com, 2012).
This paper is relevant to my experiment because in order to create a proper testing area, it is important to know what effects the environment will have on the plane. In addition to that it puts the question as to would it really matter what kind of paper was used for the plane? Would that slight difference in weight of varying types of paper really make a difference in a controlled environment on how far the paper airplane would fly? My hope is to find an answer to that question with my experiment.

This paper also covers what affects the paper airplanes flight length. In this paper, lift is the main topic discussed and goes in depth to provide information on how lift works. It also covers air drag, density, and pressure. There are formulas to determine exactly what amount of drag, density, pressure, or force is applied or felt during the flight of the airplane. The items discussed in this paper are more advanced than what will be included in my experiment but it provides a great deal of information to base my experiment on as well as factors that will alter the results (www.123helpme.com, 2012).
This paper is relevant to my experiment because it provides information to better plan my experiment to eliminate more factors that will affect my results. As with the paper listed above, my hope is to use this information to better plan and execute my experiment to find if the slight difference in paper weight of the paper airplane would affect how far the plane would go.

Find a place with no interference from the environment to do the experiment (in this case, a hallway/room that is 20 feet long). v. Use the tape measure and masking tape and create a start line and from that point mark each foot with a piece of tape. vi. Have your helper stand by the testing area with the tape and have them ready to mark where the airplane lands when it is thrown. vii. Perform the experiment, having the same person throw each time, and have the helper mark each contact point when the planes are thrown. viii. Measure marks using the markings on the floor and the tape measure for the areas in-between each foot. ix. Draw a conclusion based on the data collected. d. Reasoning
I chose this design plan because it contained the amount of interference with the results and it would gather the information needed in as concise a manner as possible. By gathering the materials in advance and by making the planes and marking out the testing area in advance it allows more time to concentrate on the actually testing and recording of data. By planning this way, the hope is to gather the most accurate data in the most efficient way with little to no corruption. e. Sequence of events used to collect data
For the sequence of events, I plan to follow my design plan. By gathering the materials, then building the airplanes, then marking out the testing area, and finally doing the tests and recording the data, I hope to achieve the most accurate results in the most efficient way. The data collected would then be recorded in a chart for later evaluation. f. Tools, Technologies, and measurement units used to collect data
The tools are pretty basic for this particular experiment. Papers, tape measure, masking tape, extra person, paper airplane book, pencil, and paper are all things that almost everyone has and can use. For this experiment the unit of measurement will be inches. 3. Explain and Identify the dependent, independent, and controlled variables
The dependent variable is the distance the paper airplane will fly. The independent variable is the paper type and the force. By using different types of paper I will be altering the weight of the plane and therefore will be altering the outcome of the flight. The force will be as controlled as possible but there is still the chance that it will be slightly different with each flight of the plan because there is no way for me to measure the force of each throw. The controlled variables are the force by which the plane is thrown and the air current in the house. For this experiment, I chose to work indoors where I could control the amount of wind resisitance or push by turning off any central air and fans and leaving the windows closed. For the force to be the same, one person did all the throwing so that the force could be as constant as possible. 4. Explain what you will do to reduce the threats to internal validity
To reduce the threats of internal validity, I will be controlling as much of the situation as I can. I will have the testing area closed off with only the one who is helping me and me in the room. I will have no outside wind effects because all windows, door s, and vents will be closed. I will control the force as much as I can by only having one person throwing the plane from the very same spot each time with marks on the plane as to where the thrower shall hold the plane each time. 5. Hypothesis
I believe that the paper type for the paper airplanes will affect the flight of the planes, but only slightly. I chose two very different types of paper in the hopes of seeing the greatest difference in flight lengths. I do believe that the weight of the paper will affect how far the planes fly because the amount of gravity will be greater the heavier the paper is. This extra weight will make it harder for the plane to fly as far as the lighter plane. B. Explain the process of data collection
Attached you will find pictures of the airplanes used for the testing.
For the testing, we set up the area according to the design plan. We shut all windows and doors, turned off the central air, and made sure that no one entered or exited the testing area as we were testing. We then proceeded to perform the test. We threw each airplane three times so that we had an average flight distance to prevent altered data because of a throw that was slightly different in force. Each of those flight distances was recorded on the chart and an average was found.

C. Explain the results of the experiment
There was a slight difference in the distance that the airplanes flew based on the different weight of the paper. The heavier paper, or poster board, caused the gravitational effect on the airplane to be greater which caused the flight to be shorter. The lighter paper, or construction paper, had less gravitational effect on the airplane and therefore allowed the plane to fly a greater distance. This is shown in the graph below. The plane made of construction paper flew on average almost twelve inches further than the plane made of poster board.

D. Provide a conclusion 1. Discussion of whether your results confirm your hypothesis
My hypothesis was right, the increase in weight did in fact cause a shorter flight for the airplane. The average flight of the lighter plane made from construction paper went about twelve inches further than that of the poster board plane. 2. Explanation of why experimental design in a key factor in the success of the scientific inquiry
The design of the experiment is critical for the success of the experiment. If you take the time to plan out the whole experiment, taking time to think about variables, you can create an environment that will almost completely eliminate corruption of the experiment. With proper planning, the experiment will run smoothly and there will be no need to run for alternative things to complete the experiment which would leave room for errors, inconsistencies, and changes in the testing area. 3. Explanation of how your investigation can be replicated by someone else and discuss how the replication of an experiment is an evaluation of validity
By using the same design plan and steps, anyone can perform the same experiment. The results would show the same results, no matter whether the same person did the experiment or if someone else did. By doing the same experiment over and over again, and having the results come out the same, it gives validity to the results and makes them more believable. E. Bibliography

It is made up of dried corn kernels that have the ability to pop when activated by heat, yielding a soft, but crunchy snack. Popcorn can be made over the stove or in a microwavable bag. When the corn kernel is brought to a heat temperature of a boiling point, steam is formed from the water inside the kernel, this causes an intense pressure inside the kernel. Because the outside of the kernel is strong, it’s able to hold and capture the steam inside, which then quickly explodes and turns inside out. This is where we get the soft, but crunchy snack. Literature Review There are many brands of popcorn readily available at the grocery stores. There have been quite a few experiments done to test which one is the best in terms of producing the most amount of popped kernels. Sean Boyd did an experiment, titled “The Jawbreakers of the Popcorn Industry,” where he tested a total of 5 different brands of popcorn to see which one would produce the most kernels. He performed the experiment 3 times on each brand and it was successful. His hypothesis was incorrect, but it yielded an answer that Oroville popcorn was not the best popcorn, but that another brand was. Data types are used to store various types of data which is managed by program.
