The third objective that relates to the book is Objective 5 – “Integrate advocacy skills in the influence of public policy.” The ultimate premise of the book was that there needs to be transparency and accountability in healthcare. Currently the healthcare system is broken and burdening our families, businesses and national debt (Makary, 2012). Through transparency, however, we can empower consumers to make the practice of medicine more honest, address the cost crisis, and make hospitals accountable to the delivery of safer care. Advocacy is an important role nurses must take for their patients. One example Makary (2012) provided was a nurse who will administer a medicine even if she believes it was ordered incorrectly, because that hospital …show more content…
The first issue it addressed was doctors being unaccountable for their mistakes and errors. The author gave the story of Hodad, a physician who was known by the hospital staff to bring “death and destruction” yet who was repeatedly requested by patients who did not know better. The patients who ended up with him as their surgeon had longer recovery times, more procedures, and bad surgical outcomes, yet they still praised him. This doctor was able to continue his improper and overall poor care because the hospital lacked a system of standardization, oversight or ways to measure quality. More importantly, though, Hodad brought the hospital more money through his medical errors. This is just one example of story after story addressed in the book about doctors who made poor decisions, did unnecessary procedures, and harmed patients but were not reprimanded or held accountable because the hospital profited (Makary, …show more content…
It opened my eyes to the incidence of poor practice, high costs, and unaccountable nature of healthcare. Patients should feel empowered to take their care into their own hands, and health care workers should feel supported and encouraged to speak up about improper care. With the rising cost of health care threatening numerous aspects of our individual lives and country as a whole, it is important to address issues that raise costs and explore ways to lower costs. From this knowledge, I can learn to deliver safer patient care, help control the costs of health care, and advocate for changes in healthcare

The nursing practicum and capstone course serves as a closing to an extremely fast paced and exciting program. This is when everything that has been taught up to this point now makes sense and hopefully is shown in discussions, lectures, written assignments, and class participation. January 5, 2006 Personal Leadership Development Plan It has been my experience that health care professionals as well as consumers are becoming more verbal about the inadequacies of the health care system.
