...DATE: 11 November 2013 SUBJECT: Donations for Fallen Heroes Monument in Virginia As the marketing director and for a military veteran’s foundation I take great honor in representing our military here in Virginia. When providing marketing communications to our sponsors and military families to discuss getting sponsorship or donations to our organization it is important to look at demographics and psychographics in order to be able to target the correct audience. Demographics and psychographics affect the way consumers buy in to products. The demographics I am appealing to for our organization is location and age. There are a lot of Virginia residents that are have an affiliation with the military either by having served, serving now or as a retiree. Building this monument for Virginia residents gives them a symbol of something meaningful that honors their families and it is right outside their front door. Another demographic would be age. I am appealing to the age range of 15 years old and up. Fifteen year olds are in high school and some of them may be a part of their Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at their school. Some may be in the class just to get a credit but most times their parents or a family member served or is currently serving in the military. When dealing with psychographics I would try to appeal to people and corporations that have some of the same values and beliefs as the military. I would look for integrity, customer service, and respect for...

...Service Learning is the cornerstone class that links academic studies at the College of Muscogee Nation (CMN) with the student and the communities. Each will strengthen the other as we learn to use cultural and historical facts and traditions to face social problems, meet human needs, promote civic responsibility and provide a basis for future citizen support. My service project is using volunteerism to improve the quality of life for the children in the Okmulgee area by applying the Muscogee traditions and culture taught to us through the curriculum of College of Muscogee Nation and our ancestors. The first goal of this service learning project is to improve the quality of life for the children of the low-income Okmulgee community residents. A historical assessment of the Okmulgee area provides a picture of drastic change and a people trying to make genuine progress in face of pressure beyond their control. This area, like the United States, has experienced drastic changes in the last fifty years including loss of manufacturing plants such as the Peanut Plant, Phillips 66 Refinery, Americana Window Glass, Ingersoll-Rand, and Ball Brothers Glass. The 2013 U.S. Census Bureau lists the population of Okmulgee as 12, 373 with 25.5% below poverty level. The per capita income for the 12 months (in 2013 dollars) is 16, 981 compared to the national per capita of $24,208. According to Oklahoma Unemployment records the unemployment rate in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma was 4.1% in April...

...laws, or customs, and natural moral duties. That however, does not restrict the individuals within the community to have their own ethical believes. According to Boylan, “Community membership is both a great enabler of personal liberty and a hindrance one personal liberty. One cannot have the one without the other,” (Boylan, 2009). The focus of this paper is to create a general profile of a community chosen by the team. The community chosen is the Passaic Park community located in Passaic NJ. The type of people living in this community is orthodox Jews; the females are mostly stay at home moms, while the men work mostly in corporate America, and business owners. They donate a lot of money within their own community to build their own schools, a place of worship, and to politicians that will favor their way of life. The members of the community interact at place of worship, at different Jewish festivals such as Rosh Hashanah, and many different other gatherings. They buy their grocery from their own community members that own business in that community, because it has to be kosher, and are afraid of buying from outsiders who might not be selling the right product. How would you describe the responsibility of the individuals to the community? What are the community’s responsibilities to the individuals? The individuals of this community can be described as deontological. This is describe as a “moral theory that emphasizes one’s duty to do a particular action just because the...

The company decided that the digital aspect would be a separate business unit within the NYT. They needed their employees to embrace a growing strategy rather than a century-old newspaper company. Even though the company grew online, advertisements continued to decline. The NYT decided to launch an online subscription since they were attracted to user charges. This subscription had an annual premium where an individual would have access to any...

...Cameron Roney Lifespan Development Eight Stages of Man Interview General question on childhood: I interviewed a seventy year old woman named Virginia that I met while doing my community service. I asked her to think about her first ten years of life and to describe times that she can remember being cared for. She said that it was her grandmother that did most of the caretaking for her, especially when she was sick. She recalled one time when she had a really bad sinus infection that her grandmother helped her through. When I asked her if she could think of any time she was not very well cared for, the only time she could think of is when her father would come home bombed, which sparked some intense arguments in the family. She recalled feeling very lost during these times. Fun times in her childhood consisted of time with her family since she did not have any friends as a child. Specifically, she remembered having a lot of fun planting pumpkin seeds with her family. Trust vs. Mistrust: I asked her to describe her relationship with her parents. She said they were very close, and she went hunting with her father often. She got a lot of adult attention. She considered herself to be pretty self reliant and optimistic despite her loneliness. She feels that her seclusion from children her age was a big factor in developing her independence and self reliance. She was trustful of her parents and family, and trustful in herself to deal with most problems that arose...

...referenced, along with 935,081 online reference searches. There are 247,000 library card holders out of a district population of 430,999” (Jocolibrary.org, 2015). That’s pretty amazing statistics considering the availability of media at most people’s fingertips. One would think that there wasn’t much need to travel to a library. Apparently though, this community thinks so. The library wasn’t always what it is today. The library started in the 1950s. There was no set building that housed the books and employees. Actually there were no real employees. Community members who loved books and wanted to share that love, ran volunteer libraries out of their homes, out of their places of business such as barbershops, shopping centers, schools, and even a plumbing company. There was even a traveling bookmobile to reach those that could not get to the stationary makeshift libraries. What did it take to go from books tucked away in a plumbing company to the great expanse of the Johnson County Library that we see today? Hard work and a great passion for what these volunteers were doing is what created the first Johnson County Library. Having a mission, a vision, a set of rock strong values and the knowledge that it takes more than an organization by itself to succeed is what made it such an attribute to the communities it serves. The mission of the...

...every moment. So when we think of heroes, our instant assumption is of someone on television, who does something for the community. I am not questioning the work of these famous figures, but do they work harder because of social influence? If they do not participate in the community, will they be hated? I find this next hero worth mentioning considering the countless hours she has invested working hard while no one was watching her. At the age of 9 years old, Kathleen Rossi, founder of the non-profit organization Kathleen’s Kurls, has made such an impact on families who have been struck by cancer because of her “why” and “how”. Who is Kathleen Rossi? She is now a 6th grade student at Spanish River Christian School and she is my neighbor. Kathleen swims competitively here at Saint Andrews, roller blades, cheerleads, and is in her Christmas Play. She enjoys life just like every other 11 year old girl would do, but what I find incredible is her drive to make a change in the community. She is different than the average 11 year old because she wants to see a change and she is taking the initiative to do it. Most people have an idea to change something in the world, but do not really follow through. Kathleen wants to do as much as she can to help the community of cancer patients. Her mission is to bring our community of children together to serve and give back to families less fortunate and affected with a serious illness, as well as inspire hope strength and encouragement. But why...

...OKE STEPHEN SSP12/13/H/0831 CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is typically described as self-regulation that is part of a corporation's business model and strategic plan. In a perfect world, CSR means that a business monitors itself to make sure it adheres to legal, ethical, environmental, and international standards across its operations. The more visible aspect of CSR is a corporation's willingness to promote and support community, national, and global causes. Corporations do this through corporate philanthropy, cause-related marketing, and sponsorships. CSR aspires to honor people, planet, profits...in that order. Corporate initiative to assess and take responsibility for the company's effects on the environment and impact on social welfare. The term generally applies to company efforts that go beyond what may be required by regulators or environmental protection groups. Corporate social responsibility may also be referred to as "corporate citizenship" and can involve incurring short-term costs that do not provide an immediate financial benefit to the company, but instead promote positive social and environmental change. Companies have a lot of power in the community and in the national economy. They control a lot of assets, and may have billions in cash at their disposal for socially conscious investments and programs. Some companies may engage in "greenwashing", or feigning interest in corporate responsibility, but many large...

Depositors' money is invested in selected investment establishments spread across a diverse range of investment portfolios based strictly on Syariah principles to preserve the purity and integrity of profits derived which is free from "riba"elements and to avoid trading in prohibited ‘haram' products. The fund board was established in 1962 as a modest proposal to aid the Malayan rural economy and to enable the Muslims to perform 'Hajj', one of the tenets of their faith. Today TH is one of the greatest cooperative success stories in Malaysia. Its basic principles, structured by the Royal Professor Ungku Aziz who was then an economic lecturer and later became the Vice Chancellor of the University Malaya, remain unchanged, but the institution has developed beyond imagination. In the early days, Islamic community in Malaysia resorted to rather unsystematic and traditional methods when it comes to saving their money for the purpose of performing the holy pilgrimage. Most believed that money kept under the pillow at home is a guaranteed way to preserve its integrity and free of ‘riba' practices. Another critical focus relates to the selling off their land and property for the same purpose. Such unsafe and imprudent ways create a freeze on asset liquidation and hinders the growth of the nation's economic resiliency. Pilgrims returning...

"I am the real George Zimmerman," declares the website, set up over the weekend. "On Sunday February 26th, I was involved in a life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage. As a result of the incident and subsequent media coverage, I have been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life. This website's sole purpose is to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries." Zimmerman's "life altering event" was the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an act that the neighborhood watch volunteer told Sanford, Florida, police was an act of self defense. Zimmerman has not been charged with a crime in Martin's death, a fact that has provoked demonstrations and calls that he be prosecuted for killing the teen. ...elements that make human life possible is water. Around the globe, everyday 780 million people still have to live without clean water and 2.5 billion people still do not have a toilet. In some the developing country regions, water crisis becomes bigger and bigger of a problem, due to the scarcity of water, and access to clean water. Even though water is a recyclable resource, only 2.53 percent of earth’s water is fresh. Therefore for due to lack of community effort, and technology, people around the world are struggling every day to get access to clean, drinkable water. DIARRHEA One of the leading causes of diarrhea is due to the consumption of unsafe water. Diarrhea is also the second leading cause of death for children under five years old, killing one in five, 90% of them are from developing countries. The number of death is more than malaria, AIDS, and measles combined. Even though this may seem to be an easy fix, over 37% of the earth’s population does not have access to proper sanitation, and 1.1 billion still perform open defecation. However, diarrhea can be simply prevented by higher levels of access to safe water, proper sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition. • 3.4 million people die each year due to water related illness. • Every 21 seconds, a child dies from diarrhea. • Each day, additional 2,350 children die from malnutrition, poor sanitation and hygiene. • Almost 1.5 million children under five die from diarrhea around the world WOMEN In many third world...

...Leveraging Philanthropy Monetary Waqf for Micro Finance[1] By Dr. Muhammad Anas Zarka [2] Paper Presented to a Symposium Towards an Islamic Micro-Finance April 14, 2007 ISLAMIC FINANCE PROJECT Islamic Legal Studies Program HARVARD LAW SCHOOL ABSTRACT The paper proposes a Monetary Waqf ( MW ) of a variable size, whose major assets are monetary, to provide micro finance to the productive poor. MW depends, as usual in any waqf, on initial permanent donations whose expected income covers the administrative and maintenance needs of MW. A novel feature in the proposed waqf is the mobilization of temporary funds extended to MW as interest-free loans, on call or for a fixed term. MW guarantees repayment to providers of funds, and uses the funds to provide micro-finance to the productive poor in various Shariah Compliant modes, at terms that sustain the waqf but are most favorable to recipients. To strengthen its guarantee, MW must have two tiers of philanthropic guarantors: Guarantors of liquidity, and Guarantors of Losses . Guarantors of Losses help insulate fund providers from risk of default by microfinance recipients. This helps to attract to MW temporary funds many times larger than the guarantee commitments. Payments to make up the losses can be counted by these Guarantors towards their annual zakat obligations. Monetary Waqf in the context of Islam’s economic goals Islamic Shari'ah...
