The History of Style, Decoration and Architecture

Find 5 images of different house or buildings styles from around the world that have been prevalent in the past few centuries.

Your main objective is to develop an understanding of the different Architectural and Design periods that have influenced Architecture and Design over the past three hundred years.

You need to identify the historical influences and characteristic features (exterior only) that are evident in these images.

You also need to identify the materials used.

Our Architecture and Design of today, is influenced by Architecture and Design of the past: Contemporary styles can be replicas of past styles, contain elements and features of past styles; or they can be an eclectic mix of past and contemporary styles.

Being able to recognise these influences and features will help you understand the source of design so that you can speak “design” language to your clients and create your own designs with whatever elements and features you like.

It will give you the freedom to be creative.

You might identify a building that was built during the Georgian era, or was built later but contains Georgian (neoclassical) features: a pediment, façade with columns; symmetrical windows...

You might identify a building that was built during the Art Deco period in 1922; or a building that has Art Deco features like Egyptian motifs and geometric ornamentation...

Some buildings look exactly like a Gothic building from the Middle Ages but it could have been built in the late 1800s. For this building, you would say in the title. “Gothic style influence”; and then you can identify its Gothic features – it might have vertical spires, lancet windows...

Module 2 has included all the main styles to assist you in identifying influences and features.

It has been written in chronological order to help you access the information.

For references, look at examples of buildings from particular eras, each containing their style influences, and Architectural and Design features.

Debunking Television's Portrayal of Interior Design

...to Interior Design April 3, 2014 Esma Dengiz Article Response The article Student Perceptions: Debunking Television’s Portrayal of Interior Design by Lisa K. Waxman and Stephanie Clemons addresses the common misconceptions society, and design students have towards the true meaning of being an interior designer and the discipline interior design. Both Waxman and Clemons take a unique perspective when analyzing this issue. This article shares an interesting perspective that involves exposing the noticeable truth that affect students that come into the interior design study. Instead of arguing against the preconceived idea that design-related television suggest, both Waxman and Clemons pose an argument that implies to live with the perceptions but to dig deeper and get an education that really teaches what interior design truly is. My reaction to the article would be in total agreement to the authors’ findings. Starting with their first argument when they talk about how even though twenty-some years have passed since they got their degree in Interior Design and are now professors in the discipline, they still deem necessary to give to people an explanation of what they really do. Personally I can relate to that. Coming from engineering school and an architectural program I never found myself in the position of explaining people what the field of study was really about because it’s rather common knowledge to know what architecture really is. Transferring to an Interior Design...

Better Living Through Interior Design

...BETTER LIVING THROUGH INTERIOR DESIGN In today’s hectic world, it is often the little things that keep our lives from getting too stressful. Often, the most important space in a person’s life is in their home. Therefore, it can be argued that how a person designs their home can be a direct reflection on how happy they are in life. Before determining the type of design to incorporate into one’s home, many will consult a professional for advice. An interior designer has received education and training on how to best incorporate a client’s personality into their environment. It is an interior designer’s job to improve the psychological well being of their clients. This is achieved by respecting their client’s “social, physical and psychological needs and applying them in a safe and ecologically sensitive manner that promotes the health, safety and welfare of the clients” (Ball, 2002). The interior designer will take the client’s ideas and draft a simple outline of the design needed. This outline will include a budget breakdown so the client is aware of the monetary cost of their desired design inspiration. When considering a design style, an interior designer will begin each project or room as a blank slate. Regardless of how the room or area is currently decorated, the designer must be able to visualize the client’s ideas. It is the job of the interior designer to do simple and basic redesigns that can be easily changed, without the need of an architect, such...

It goes without saying that your actions and the way you portray yourself resembles your personality, for example, if you are an unorganised person the chances are your home will be messy. This also reflects on the way we decorate our homes because ‘everyone wants to create the perfect home, and often the way you decorate it is an extension of your attitude and feelings’ (www.hunters.com, 2018). However, individuals have not always portrayed their homes with such pride, considering the diversity between rich and poor in the 1900’s which made a huge impact on the lower classes capability to decorate their homes.
