Among the issues being discussed is the company’s discontinuation of depreciation on productive assets that it had used previously, but it was not currently using. The case permits a technical examination of depreciation and impairment accounting issues with consideration of the FASB’s asset/liability measurement approach, fair value accounting, use of the FASB Codification, and comparisons to International Financial Reporting Standards. The case requirements are divided into basic requirements, which would be appropriate for intermediate level students; and advanced requirements, which would be more appropriate for accounting seniors, as well as M.B.A. and fifth-year accounting students. Keywords: accounting for long-lived assets; depreciation; impairment. INTRODUCTION ristin Murphy recently joined the audit team of one of the more interesting clients in her accounting firm’s practice. An important issue has arisen for this client on a topic that she has not encountered in her four years with the firm. Following is some background on the client and the accounting issue under consideration. K BIOSCIENCE...

...Diamond Foods, Inc.: Anatomy and Motivations of Earnings Manipulation Mahendra R. Gujarathi ABSTRACT: Diamond Foods is America’s largest walnut processor specializing in processing, marketing, and distributing nuts and snack products. This real-world case presents financial reporting issues around the commodities cost shifting strategy used by Diamond’s management to falsify earnings. By delaying the recognition of a portion of the cost of walnuts acquired into later accounting periods, Diamond Foods materially underreported the cost of sales and overstated earnings in fiscal 2010 and 2011. The primary learning goal of the case is to help students understand the anatomy and motivations of earnings manipulation. Specifically, students will have the opportunity to (1) apply the FASB’s Conceptual Framework to a real-world context, (2) determine the nature of errors and compute their numerical effects on financial statements, (3) understand motivations for earnings management and actions needed for managing earnings of future years, (4) explain the anatomy of financial reporting fraud by reconstructing journal entries, (5) prepare comparative financial statements for retroactive restatements, (6) explain the rationale for clawback provisions in compensation contracts, and (7) understand the difference between the real and accrual-based earnings management. Keywords: earnings management; financial statement fraud; restatements; error correction; clawback provision; Conceptual Framework...

The company’s financial statements, prepared by the client’s co-owner, contain accounting choices and judgments that students should identify and evaluate using critical thinking skills. This case is suitable for use in introductory and intermediate financial accounting, and in introductory auditing and assurance courses. Accompanying the case is a set of teaching notes and assessment rubrics for use by instructors. THE CASE The Setting Wiki Art Gallery, Inc. ...Scarce skills Jobs are scarce. What plan can you make to secure a job in today’s world of work? The answer is to study for a scarce skill! What is a scarce skill? A scarce skill is a qualification or job for which there are too little people in South Africa doing the job. Government would like to set South Africa on a winning economic pathway, by developing the skills of our people and assisting people to find employment more easily. Studying for a scarce skill would not only mean helping your country, but also helping yourself! A scarcity in qualifications or jobs, can come from the fact that the occupation is new and very few people have studied to fill these posts. It can also happen that people have not chosen to study for the course and a scarcity developed in the job. Sometimes special experience is required, for example people with years of experience of management, or in other cases people are needed in certain towns, cities or geographical areas. Scarcity can also be in terms of equity, for example too few women enter into a specific career. 2 How can you benefit? Choose to study for a scarce skill. Not only will you be able to find a job more easily, but chances are that you will be paid better and progress to the top of your career path more easily, because employers will snap you up. Also, some qualifications are scarce all over the world, which means that opportunities open up for you much more easily. You can make an appointment with one of the Department’s careers...

...Accounting and finance degrees: is the academic performance of placement students better? Abstract The relationship between placement and academic performance on accounting and finance degrees is significantly under-researched. This paper examines the relationship between a number of factors, including placement, and academic performance as measured by average marks. Readily available data on placement status, gender and prior achievement for the academic years ended 2004, 2005 and 2006 for an accounting and finance degree were used. Linear regression models were constructed using two versions of the data – one with all students in it and the second with graduates only. Placement students perform significantly better than full-time students and, in the Graduates model, it is the female placement students who perform significantly better than their male counterparts. Most recent prior academic performance is significant in all models whereas gender had no separate significant effect on performance in the second and final years of the degree. The paper concludes with suggestions for further research into placement. Keywords: academic performance, placement, gender, work-based learning Introduction There is a considerable body of UK and overseas research investigating the influence of particular factors on academic performance. Factors such as gender, prior academic achievement and course type have been examined over a wide range of degree courses (see for example Morrison et...

The client is considering purchasing a similar company with the vision of expanding into the sales and service of emerging technologies. The target company’s unaudited financial statements contain questionable accounting choices and judgments that appear to enable the company to meet external financial reporting constraints. In their role as financial advisers, students are expected to use critical thinking skills to identify and evaluate questionable choices in the target company’s financial statements. This case is suitable for use in introductory and intermediate financial accounting as well as introductory auditing and assurance courses, and can be used as a context for inclass discussion, as a basis for exam questions, and/or as a writing assignment. Assessment rubrics and Teaching Notes accompany the case for use by instructors. Keywords: financial accounting; policy choices; loan covenants; ratio analysis.
