...TUI University Michael D. Reid BUS 401 International Business Module Four Case Assignment Cultural mistakes often occur when someone doesn’t understand the cultures of the country they are visiting. While cultural mistakes may be offensive, most of the time they are not intentional but are the result of ignorance. Individuals that conduct business in different countries should take as much time as possible to familiarize themselves with the culture of the countries they encounter during their business ventures. In Bulgaria, many American executives get confused as they think everything they say is taken negatively, for example shaking your head "no" means that the person is listening and not that they disagree with you. In Hungary, glasses of apricot brandy are often served at business meetings even early in the morning and to refuse is seen as being rude or even untrustworthy. When conducting meetings, business associates should be aware of what "punctuality" means because in different countries the meaning varies. They should be prepared to act professionally in the face of unexpected tardiness, no matter how unprofessional it may seem. (Jared Wade) In the 1950s, Richard Nixon made a trip to Brazil, and as he was getting off the plane, he greeted a mass of Brazilian officials, journalists and other citizens. On his way down the stairs to the runway he smiled, waved and gave the "A-Okay" sign to show the people his good intentions. Unfortunately for Nixon, this...

...INTERNATIONAL HR It is evident that in today’s economy, globalization has affected every facet of the way businesses are run and the way customs view companies. This is also true of HRM and IHRM. We have seen that businesses that usually operated in a monolithic culture and environment are now finding their markets, suppliers and customers from all over the globe. Some of them even outsource their HR functions to other countries. For this discussion, I chose a country I had visited a few years ago, United Arab Emirates - U.A.E. In UAE, status is important and must be recognized by using the correct title when addressing someone. Their custom is to use Sheikh meaning Chief, or Sheikha for a woman. In this part of the world, people are addressed generally by their first names such as Mr. John. When greeting people it is important to acknowledge the most senior person in the room first. Handshakes are used and can last a long time. Etiquette recommends that one waits for the other to withdraw their hand first before doing the same. When introducing a man to a woman, it is advisable to wait and see if a hand is extended. The right hand is always used as the left is preserved for bodily hygiene and considered unclean. Holding hands among men is common and does not carry the same connotations as it does in the U.S. Many people in the Middle East claim a more modest area of personal space than is usual in the U.S. Accordingly, it could seem rude for an individual to step away when...

...REDBUS: THE NEXT STEP FOR GROWTH redBus launched in 2006 as a bus-ticketing company that served bus operators by providing an online platform to display their real-time inventory, and served bus travelers by providing an efficient online and offline ticket-booking and delivery network. Although they have achieved a growth of 1000 times by 2012 since their initial establishment, they are currently faced with the challenge of selecting the right growth strategy to achieve scalability and sustainable growth, however, this can be accomplished through careful selection of the right option that formulates a strategic direction and action plan. The first option for redBus is to launch its own private buses since it had developed strong capabilities in analytics and data mining. This would serve as a great advantage in identifying the most profitable routes and launching its own buses on these routes. This may appear to be a profitable option, however, I believe this will damage their relationship with the private bus operator customer segment and will open up new competition and how they will respond will have to be dealt with. The second option is to diversify into add-on service offerings like online booking for air travel, hotels, cabs, and package tours. Although redBus has a strong technology platform and infrastructure in place to integrate these add-on value offerings, this market is highly competitive, has high entry barriers and is dominated by six large online travel...

...That was the first venture by what has grown to be an international business trading in 15 European countries. In 1960 the company – still called Cowie – moved into motor retailing. And in 1980 it started to purchase bus companies with the acquisition of the Grey-Green bus company in London. Over the next few years, there were more bus company acquisitions, with the biggest – British Bus Group plc – in 1996 making the business one of the largest bus operators in the UK. Arriva was born in 1997, bringing together many different company backgrounds under the Arriva flag. Also in that year Arriva acquired its first business on the European mainland – Unibus Holdings in Denmark. In 1999 Arriva decided to focus its management and financial resources to enable the group to capitalise on opportunities in passenger transportation in the UK and mainland Europe. Subsequently the group successfully disposed of a number of major motor retailing and finance businesses. This process was completed by the summer of 2003 and the sale of its vehicle rental division followed in 2006. During that time Arriva has established a position as one of the leading transport services organisations in Europe with bus and train operations in the UK, Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden. ...praised by their superior, Lieutenant "Mac" McMahon. Later, Jack sees a city bus explode. The bomber contacts him, explaining that a similar bomb is rigged on another bus, and will get activated if it goes over 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) and blow up when the speed drops below 50. The bomber demands a larger ransom and says he will set off the bomb if passengers are offloaded. Jack races through traffic and manages to board the moving bus. However, it is already going over 50: the bomb is armed. Jack explains the situation to the driver, Sam, but then a panicked small-time criminal on the bus, fearing Jack is going to arrest him, fires his gun, wounding Sam. Passenger Annie Porter takes Sam's place behind the wheel while Jack explains the situation to everyone aboard. Jack examines the bomb under the bus and phones Harry, who uses clues to identify the bomber as a former police officer. The police clear a route for the bus to a closed-down freeway. Mac insists they offload the passengers onto a pacing flatbed truck, but Jack warns about the bomber's demands. The bomber allows the officers to offload the injured Sam, but detonates an explosive under the bus's front stairs when another passenger attempts to escape; she falls out and is run over. Jack learns that part of the freeway ahead is incomplete, but gets Annie to accelerate the bus and jump the gap. Jack directs Annie to nearby Los Angeles International Airport to drive on the runway. Meanwhile, Harry has identified the bomber...

...www.vtpi.org Info@vtpi.org 250-360-1560 Transit Price Elasticities and Cross-Elasticities 25 May 2012 Todd Litman Victoria Transport Policy Institute Abstract This paper summarizes price elasticities and cross elasticities for use in public transit planning. It describes how elasticities are used, and summarizes previous research on transit elasticities. Commonly used transit elasticity values are largely based on studies of short- and medium-run impacts performed decades ago when real incomes where lower and a larger portion of the population was transit dependent. As a result, they tend to be lower than appropriate to model long-run impacts. Analysis based on these elasticity values tends to understate the potential of transit fare reductions and service improvements to reduce problems such as traffic congestion and vehicle pollution, and understate the long-term negative impacts that fare increases and service cuts will have on transit ridership, transit revenue, traffic congestion and pollution emissions. ...Analysis Introduction- InterCity InterCity has been transporting Kiwis and international visitors around New Zealand (NZ) for more than 30 years. In 2009, InterCity carried over 1.3million passengers throughout their extensive NZ network (Rode, 2010). Their current business model (B2C) has been developed over time to compete with airlines and other inter-city bus companies such as Nakedbus. The company’s long run success has lead managers to keep InterCity’s business model relatively consistent. However, this approach will not ensure a sustainable competitive advantage in the upcoming future. In order to compete with other companies changes will need to be made to the existing business model. This report will complete basic analyses including; customer, competitor, industry and SWOT. These analyses will lead to the discovery of critical success factors. Combined, these factors and analysis will allow future recommendation to be made in relation to the marketing mix. Strategies will be indentified which include, retaining low pricing, promotions to students, providing an online feedback system, focus on upcoming technologies and maintaining bus quality. Industry Analysis In order to understand the industry, analysis of the four factors used in PEST will be discussed briefly. Political/Legal Regulations and road rules are the main political/ legal issues in the transport industry, such as driver hours, bus facilities, and speed limits. These must be followed to maintain InterCity’s...

Lessons in what not to do can often be found in cities, where most officials, overwhelmed by a flood of problems, try to cope by naming and solving them one at a time. If they are faced with congestion, their answer is to widen streets and build bypasses and parking garages. Crime? Lock up the offenders. Smog? Regulate emissions. Illiteracy? Toughen standards. Litter? Raise fines. Homelessness? Build shelters, and if that seems to fail, jail the loiterers. Insufficient budget to fund all these competing priorities? Raise taxes or impose sacrificial austerity, to taste. Disaffected voters? Blame political enemies. Sometimes single-problem, single-solution approaches do work, but often, as previously described, optimizing one element in isolation pessimizes the entire system. Hidden connections that have not been recognized and turned to advantage will eventually tend to create disadvantage. Consider what happened in Borneo in the s. Many Dayak villagers had malaria, and the World Health Organization had a solution that was simple and direct. Spraying DDT seemed...

...service is called Stageline and runs regular routes throughout the city of Clovis proper and into some portions of the neighboring town, Fresno. The paratransit service is called RoundUp and provides service to disabled residents of the city. Clovis Transit is considered a mid-sized transit agency and provides approximately 300,000 trips per year. The city brands itself in the western motif with the goal of maintaining a small-town feel and personality while still serving a population of just short of 100,000 citizens. Passengers who use Clovis Transit fall into three main categories: low income, student, and disabled riders. These riders are considered “transit dependent” which means they have no other choice for transportation beyond the bus and therefore marketing has remained a low priority. The City of Clovis maintains a website that provides access to all its departments including Transit. The Transit department’s website currently contains basic information about the services offered and various forms and documents that can be downloaded by the user. Because the department serves two distinct customer groups, regular fixed-route transit riders and disabled citizens, there is an opportunity to improve the website to and provide the information, products, and access each group needs. Clovis Transit also has a Twitter account but it is not promoted nor used regularly to communicate with followers. Transit riders frequently express their desire for increased communication about...
