Civil rights act of 1991- citizens who are working in foreign countries, you still can't discriminate.
Female expatriates- not accepted at the same rate as their male counterparts. Approx only 20% but it was actually a vast improvement. Slowly improving.
What's wrong with women? Women not being selected and blaming other countries for not being accepted but really, WE are the problem! Still making assumptions about other countries want or don't want. We are not giving them a chance.
Survey-Female say YES as the same rate as Men for wanting to be expatriates.
Females not selected:
Myth- not interested, provoke locals, discriminated in other countries
WE either they don't want it or they are not wanted- 2 main assumptions.
Foreigner- not treated same way as local women are and will not suffer and will be treated differently due to being an outsider.
Female expatriate- actually said they were an ADVANTAGE for being an expatriate. Don't get the negative reaction that they expect.
Improve rates:
Bypass our own bias, don't automatically assume they won't be accepted, do investigation how they are in fact treated.
Women has to speak up and ask to be trained for it. Assertive. Sitting there waiting and thinking pick me, will wait a long time, Take things into own hands.
Preparation:
Dealing with safety issues; appear to be more vulnerable.
DIVERSITY: anything that makes you different; ie. gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity.
Diversity issues in US: we way more regulation than any other country. build-reach advantages to best deal with challenges.--disagreements/ conflicts.
Selection in staffing; diversity is important.
HR person-domestic and A GROUP of people to help make decisions.
