...How Mercedes-Benz turned research into reality By Mustafa Bayülgen | Supply Chain Quarterly| Quarter 2 2012 issue By adopting proven practices from the supply chain literature, a Mercedes-Benz bus factory in Turkey avoided “reinventing the supply chain wheel” while making big gains in production and efficiency. As the year 2008 came to a close, the global economy was struggling. Even so, we at the Mercedes-Benz bus plant where I work in Hosdere, near Istanbul, Turkey, were determined that we would not simply weather the economic downturn but would also increase production capacity by 30 percent. We knew it would be a huge challenge because of economic conditions and the increasingly complex nature of supply chains. Nevertheless, we went ahead with the project, which ultimately proved successful. Thanks to the efforts of a logistics task-force team that Mercedes-Benz Türk A.Ş. (MBT) formed to tackle that challenge, the plant was able to meet its goal. The team achieved success by aligning all logistics operations with production operations through a project called “Hosdere 2010—New Logistics Concept.” This project applied a concept that can best be described as “evidence-based supply chain practice” (EBSCP). Simply put, EBSCP is the incorporation of proven practical or research findings into daily supply chain management practices. It involves taking what has already been discovered—examining best-practice examples and current research—and then implementing it and enhancing...

...Most the community leaders had been taken away by the FBI after Pearl Harbor. Therefore, there were few left who would speak up. Thus, began the mass evacuation of “more than 110,000 Japanese Americans on the West Coast” into “10 hastily constructed Spartan ‘relocation camps’ in seven states.” Many of these camps were not fully functioning when the people arrived. They were very cramped and lacked privacy. Mitsuko Hashiguchi, an internee, had “heard of cases where evacuees were put in horse stalls and they hadn’t even whitewashed them, or washed them down or anything – smelly, dirty.” These conditions made living in the camps difficult and a new experience for all the children, Issei, and...

...Message From the Holy Qur’an Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Those who take Riba (usury) will not stand (on the day of resurrection) except like the standing a person beaten by Shaitan (Shatan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: “Trading is only like Riba (usury)”, whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Riba (usury) shall not be punished for the past: his case is for Allah (to judge); but whoever returns [to Riba (usury)], such are the dwellers of the fire- they will be abide therein. −Surah Al-Baquarah, verse-275 Allah will destroy Riba (usury) and will give increase for Sadaqaat (deeds of charity, alms etc.)And Allah likes not the disbelievers, sinners. −Surah Al-Baquarah, verse-276 O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from Riba [(usury) (from now onward)], if you are (really) believers. −Surah Al-Baquarah, verse-278 And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger; but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sums), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums). −Surah Al-Baquarah, verse-279 1. ...World War II: The Internment of Japanese Americans Josh White Sothern New Hampshire University WORLD WAR II: THE INTERNMENT OF JAPANESE AMERICANS The topic of Japanese American Internment during the Second World War is a very important part of American history. It happened during the Second World War when nations were against each other and after the Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, Japan automatically became an enemy to the United States thus leading to the government of the day led by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 to take several measures against Japan and its origins mainly living in the United states. What followed was an executive order by the president to allow forceful removal of Americans of Japanese origin from their homes and incarcerated into camps. The government had feared another attack by the Japanese would be imminent and so they had to come up with some measures to get rid of Japanese spies that were living in the west coast. This led to one of the lowest moments in American history as these camps were an absolute human rights violation to these Japanese Americans. Most of these Japanese Americans who had been taken to these camps were actually legal American citizens thus showing that this move was based on racial stereotypes and propaganda that was being peddled during that time referring to the Japanese as less of human beings. This incarceration seriously affected these Japanese Americans...

...I have learned a lot by attending this speech of “Civil Liberties and War, Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Korematsu v. United States.” It is presented by Nihonmachi Outreach Committee(NOC). In the speech, there are three parts. They talked about community program, candlelight procession and reception. I was surprised that, it is really crowded. Most of the people are kind of old. However, I learned a lot by hearing this speech. Firstly, I learned about Nihonmachi Outreach Committee (NOC). It is a progressive organization based in the San Jose Japanese American community that is dedicated to educating the public about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, and as a consequence, is committed to defending all people on issues of civil rights, equality, justice, tolerance and peace. And one of this main activities of NOC continues to be the annual Day of Remembrance(DOR) commemorating Executive Order9066 which ordered 120,000 Japanese Americans to concentration camps during World War II. From the first event in 1981, DOR has come to present some of the defining issues facing the Japanese- American community and a time to reflect on our history in the United States. Staring with the debate over redress/reparations to support for American Muslims today. DOR has provided a forum for the San Jose Japanese American community to come together to remember the lessons of the past and define the future. However, I have also learned about the Campaign...
