...The Age Of The Internet The Internet could be impacting the way our brains think more than thought possible in the 21st century. When I say the Age of the Internet, I am not merely talking about the effects of the Internet. With the Internet, came many new technological improvements. Technology plays a major role in our lives way more than ever before. We are constantly staring at screens, always in touch with one another, and rely on it heavily in our daily lives. Almost all of us carry a piece of it in our pocket and use it like we use oxygen. If not, then we're staring at a screen. Our generation is among the first to have a major role in whom the Age of the Internet actually affects. We have grown up, literally, in front of a screen. Most of us can't even remember a time when the Internet did not exist. Because our generation will some day lead the world, will this have an effect on the way it will be run? Some of the world's leading professionals in this field provide some insight on the (possible) outcomes, such as provided by “In Defense of Distraction” by Sam Anderson in New York Magazine; “Our Cluttered Minds” by Jonah Lehrer in The New York Times; “Digital Devices Deprive Brain of Needed Downtime” and “Attached to Technology and Paying a Price” by Matt Richtel in The New York Times; and (the main article) “Impact of the Internet of Thinking by Alan Greenblatt in CQ Researcher. All these articles comment on how the Age of the Internet could have a more profound effect...

...CHAPTER – 1 INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET WHAT IS A NETWORK? [pic] A network is a group of computers that are able to communicate with one another and share data, files, programs, and operations. The computers in a network are connected via hardware and software. The hardware is what physically connects the computers in the network together. For example: telephone lines, fibre-optic cables, routers and gateways, and the computers themselves. The software is what enables us to use the hardware for communication and exchanging information. Just as your brain tells your body parts how to function and work together, the software governs the way computers in the network communicate with each other and perform functions. Software that enables networking follows a set of rules that are generally referred to as protocol. Networks can be interoperable. This means that different types of computers, using different operating systems, can be connected, communicate with each other, and share information - as long as they follow the network protocols. [pic] In Summary: A network is a group of two or more computers, connected together through a physical infrastructure, that are able to communicate and exchange information because they agree to use software that observes the same set of rules, or protocol. WHAT IS THE INTERNET? • A network of networks • Based on TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) • Global • A variety of services and...

...Many define reading as the mere examination of text. If I were to define “reading” as the sustained perusing of text that is usually, but not always, associated with the printed word, “the hours spent prowling the Internet are [indeed] the enemy of reading”. (RICH 2008) Opponents contend that spending time on the Internet improves literacy in terms of the ability to read and write. The material available online is diverse, presenting different points of views on a topic quite unlike most books. The Internet also encourages writing with websites urging users to share their opinions and comments. Thus, opponents assert that the time devoted to Internet surfing enhances literacy for we are able gather considerably more information and practice our skill of reading and writing. However, opponents seem to neglect the fact that “many youths spend most of their time on … activities that involve minimal reading at best.”(RICH 2008) Furthermore, they do not take into account the final and perhaps most important facet of “literacy”: the ability to think critically about the text. Most adopt “skim-reading”, a rapid scanning of text to pick out the main ideas, which weakens our capacity for the kind of deep reading required for critical thinking. The Internet may serve up more knowledge than a book can but as Sven Birkerts contends, “we know countless more “bits” of information… [but] we know them without a stable sense of context” (Birkerts 1994). With little time taken to chew on and...

...Enter the Age of Internet Voting Voting has changed drastically since the beginning of humanity. Some of these changes have been for the better, and others have been fraudulent. The first form of voting originated in Ancient Athens where Greeks would use small balls to vote. A white ball would be cast in favor of a candidate or a topic and a black ball would be cast to vote against someone or something. This is where the term black balled came from (Glenco). Then a couple thousand or so years later came paper ballots, lever machines, punch cards, optical scans, and touch screens. The three most well known ways of voting are by optical scanners, punch cards, and touch screens. In which touch-screens are the most dominant in America Today. There have been major incidents with all of these machines that have caused doubt about whether the results are truly accurate or a miscalculation. The best way to solve this problem is to no longer use any by optical scanners, punch cards, or touch screens and make voting possible online. Internet voting seems like the most logical answer to the current problems faced by these machines and punch cards. It is also possible to have internet voting while ensuring that the votes are accurate. New voting technologies tend to emerge out of crises of confidence as seen prominently in the 2000 presidential election. We only rarely change systems and in response to a public anxiety that electoral results can no longer be trusted. There have...

To provide access to higher education opportunities that enables students to develop knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their professional goals, improve the productivity of their organizations and provide leadership and service to their communities. When defining the problems that Kava has faced or is facing, I have to agree with Alex when he stated “We have to turn them into opportunities.” One way of doing this is to use the appreciative inquiry approach: that focuses on the positives. With over 50% of the population being under the age of 15, establishing a university in Kava with Internet service could benefit the young at age because they would be able to receive their education whether it on-campus or enroll...

...Over a certain period of time I will be studying a child under the age of 5. I will be visiting the child every 2 weeks for a couple of weeks to see how they physically develop. I will be looking at their gross and fine motor skills of the child. Every visit I will be doing something new like painting, playing catch or going to the park etc. I will look at her normal routines of her everyday life. I will take pictures and collect information from every visit so I can use it as evidence. Every visit I will be looking at their height, weight and teeth to see how they develop over the period of time. After I have done all the visits I will go over what I have done and evaluate what I have found out and compare them to an average child the same age as them and see if they are developing quicker or slower to an average child. The method I will be using to collect my information will include the internet to look at the norms, books and during the visits while I will be observing the child. In the visits I will make it fun by putting fun activites for the child to so I can work on their fine and gross motor skills to see how they are improving every visit. With the information I collect I will be evaluating after all my visits and seeing how the child has improved over a couple of months. I will aslo be comparing the child to the norms that I have found from the internet and...

...spreadsheet of Ruby’s club customers who most are young executives and college students, mainly between the ages of 18-35. Most of Ruby Club’s customers are part of the digital age, so they use mobile devices and internet daily. In addition, Ruby’s provides customers with a full night of dancing, food, drinks and fun with friends. I added to the spreadsheet a primary key which is the point of reference just in case the customer is entered twice in error, they can always cross reference and just add information needed to be added without being entered twice. I will uniquely identify a person. What I did, I added a column numbering each customer, that way every customer will be tied to a unique identifier which the customer number in the spreadsheet and so forth. I also added a filter to help better manipulate the data in the spreadsheet. Lastly , I added a tab to help them to the worksheet by keeping the same information but instead creating an easier user friendly for them entering the information needed according the day of business operation. In case they ever need to add more information to the data without messing up the originals information. normalization which change a single file to multiple files that are related to the primary key which in this case are the first column added showing the customer number but as well as the secondary key which we use in this case the age of the Ruby’s club. In summary, I think Ruben and Lisa if they continue to manage...

...The Dewey Bozella Story It can take some people many years to accomplish a dream; Dewey Bozella was one of those people. Mr. Bozella lived a very hard life, at the age of eight he saw his father beat his pregnant mother to death and at age sixteen his brother was stabbed to death in a fight. He then entered into the foster system and a life of petty crime. This was not a very good start at life in which he had so much going against him. At age seventeen he moved upstate New York to start a life which would involve boxing but instead he began an ordeal that would last twenty-six years. On June 14, 1977 a 92-year old woman was brutally attacked and murdered in her house. There was much pressure on the police and the district attorney to solve this crime. It wasn’t until 1983, a time in which he was turning his life around, that a tip from two of the suspects, who were convicts, would bring Dewey’s name into question. At age eighteen Dewey would be charged with murder. There was no physical evidence and that should have been the end of the case, but he was convicted based on testimony from two convicted felons. It wasn’t until 1990 that he was able to get a retrial due to the fact that his civil rights were violated. But again the jury found him guilty and he would return to prison. In prison he was able to get a bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree. He also had the opportunity to take up boxing, something he thought her would never get a chance to do. During...

...REACTION PAPER At the age of 16, what are you doing at this age? Ordinary teenagers at this age used to go to school particularly high school, and enjoy their teenage years. Aside from this routine, teenagers may earn money by different stuffs around them. Most of the teenagers enjoy playing online computer games as for now. And who knows you can use this stuff to earn money and lead your first step to become a successful entrepreneur or I should say technopreneur. Like Ittipat who is now a successful businessman. I just can’t imagine how these young people became successful in their life in a simple way like using technology. Ittipat made his first step when someone offer the money to buy the equipment of the online game he was addicted. Of course that way is illegal but he does not think the risk about that. Maybe this is the starter for Top to think about the business. But likes the other gamer addictive he forget his duty as a student, always playing game every day. Because of that he always get low score in his school and he didnt make up to enter state university of Thailand. ... has gone on through the centuries. In this country it was with the beginnings of rock and roll and has continued on today. Rock music is huge when it comes to censorship because of the allusion to sex, drugs, alcohol, and violence. The Government believes that profanity is what they need to censor people from, though the freedom of speech is a First Amendment right to all people. The Government sees it as what the average person would find offensive and lacks any serious value in literature, artistic, political, or scientific. It is the sexually explicit and violent material in the songs that makes it so a person has to be a certain age before they can buy a CD with this type of music. This is why many parents have to buy the CD’s that their children like. Many have found out in after doing research that this is a strictly state by state policy. There are families that have witness this because they have lived in different states, they can tell the difference from one to another. There are stores that also refuse to carry any music which can be offensive, even though they sell...

...so that we can capitalize on it. Since Macy’s, Inc has a long standing tradition of believing that giving back is the right thing to do (Macy's Inc, 2011) , we would like to help Kava try to recover from all the disasters they have gone through, and help to overcome the challenges that they are now facing. Macy’s will do this by addressing the issues found in the business scenario, forces involved in the formulation of the problem, and organizational and environmental obstacles impacting key stakeholders. After looking at the business scenario and seeing what the director of strategic planning had to say, it was easy to see what issues are present. Challenges now facing the island of Kava are 1) over 50% of the population are under the age of 15 years old; 2) the ethnic mix of languages and cultures indigenous to the South Pacific area of Kava; and 3) the economy for which the natives of Kava depend is constantly threatened by natural disasters such as tsunami,...

...What impacts the behaviors of individuals? There are several characteristics that contribute to this such as age, attitude, education and gender. How do these impact each other in the work place? Diversity plays a large role in the work place, many people working together daily and having to deal with many things that they may not agree with. Age Age impacts people in a few ways there is stereotyping, ageism and discrimination. Many workers that are over the age of 40 are considered ‘old’ and these people are thought to be ‘set in their ways’ and not willing to chance. This is not necessarily the truth, but they are more likely to be seen this way, this causes more discrimination and in turn more law suits. A perfect example of this is my father-in-law. He is in his 70’s and has been retired for 8 years, but he likes to work a couple of days a week to keep himself active. The move from another state proved to be very difficult for him to find work; he looked for 7 months before he was actually able to find work. This may not be because of his age, but he has been working for over 50 years finding a job one would think would be somewhat easy. Attitude Attitude impacts individuals in the workplace in one of two ways either negative or positive. One that has a positive attitude in the work place going to be do better at the job, whereas a person that has a negative attitude is more likely going to work as little as they can. One of the best ways to have a positive attitude...

...ascertain the age of N.O. As set out in Regina V. SLATER in the Saskatchewan court of appeal (2005) * appeal was denied because the crown proved that slater had not taken all the reasonable steps to ascertain the ages of his victims. * We believe that our client did indeed take all the reasonable steps to determine age before engaging in sexual activity with N.O. The first step outlined by Justice Jackson was Physical appearance. In relation to this step the defense would like to introduce exhibits A & B 1st slide: Notice the similarities of exhibit A to our complainant, she has large breasts and fits into the category of a 34-22-30 measurement. 2nd slide: Although exhibit B has smaller breasts she still fits into the same category as N.O. So put yourself in the shoes of our client, now can you guess how old she is? The next reasonable step that Justice Jackson pointed out was…Behaviour the fact that N.O. was observed drinking alcohol& smoking marijuana at a biker bush party can be used as relevant information pertaining to Chester’s belief that N.O. was not actually 13 In relation to our case The third step stated was…. The ages and appearances of those whose company the complaint has been found in…on this particular night N.O. had been found in the presence of bikers. it is reasonable to assume that to a be a biker one must hold a valid driver’s license. This makes majority of bikers hypothetically attending this party well above the age of consent. ...
