A Behavioral Finance Approach to Decision
Making in Entrepreneurial Finance

Abstract Three central decisions in entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial finance – entry/seed funding, financing/investment, and growth/exit – are discussed and case is made for applying the behavioral finance theories and concepts to better understand the involved decision processes, and consequently, to help improve the decisionmaking process for both entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. The behavioral finance approach is important because the traditional finance has remained silent on the first issue, and the Agency Theory (financial contracting), which is effectively the only theory that is applicable to issues in entrepreneurial finance, has produced mixed empirical results. (See for example Bitler et al. [Bitler MP, Moskowitz T J, VissingJorgensen A (2009) Why do entrepreneurs hold large ownership shares? Testing agency theory using entrepreneur effort and wealth. Working Paper. Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago].) Attempts are also made in this chapter to

Finance Internet Firm Outlook

...There has been a flood of capital being poured into technology firms at a rate that have some fearing another bubble is ready to burst and a repeat of the “dot.bomb era” of a decade ago may soon repeat. How valid is this concern? Using the recent LinkedIn initial public offering as an example, the shares soared on first day of trading last week from $45 per share to over $94, that’s 100% plus increase (this too followed a last minute decision to raise the initial offering price from around $35 to $45). The stock traded as high as $122.70 and is currently trading slightly above $94, putting the current market value of the stock close to $9 billion. Pandora, an internet radio station, recently increased their offering price just prior to its’ recent IPO which had a $2.8 billion market value at end of the first trading day. This while Pandora is unprofitable and may be for some time. For this week’s discussion, I’d like to also reference this weekend’l r s WSJ article “Virtual Farms, Rich Harvest” discussing how the next firm up, “ Zynga, a company that sells imaginary tractors and other make believe goods in online games, plans to raise some very real money from public investors” (Winfield & Cowan, 2011). Zynga is seeking about $20 billion from the offering. Many believe that other social networking sites, like Twitter and Facebook, are contemplating raising capital through issuing common stock and are scrutinizing these IPOs to help gauge how the market may respond to their...

Riordan Manufacturing Proposal

...Internet and mobile access components When designing a unified, single system intended for total company-wide access, it is important to allow for maximum access. If employees cannot access the system, data cannot be added, and the master databases will not reflect the latest data. On this same note, executives who cannot access the system will not be up to date on current numbers, which may affect current decisions and future plans. Riordan’s unified data system will be accessible through the internet via Virtual Private Network (VPN) channels. The system will not have a mobile application, though the internet portal will be accessible through smartphones and tablets. Riordan’s unified system will be hosted at the company headquarters, but employees will access the system through the internet. This is for several reasons. First, it provides a single point of access for all employees, whether they work at the company headquarters, at one of the Riordan’s outstations, or while they are at home or on travel. A single point of access means a single point of failure, which will help the IT department resolve access issues quickly. Additionally, an online access point keeps users from directly accessing the main system database, which could result in data loss or errors created by users poking around in the main system. To sign into the system at work, users will access a link on the company intranet. There is no need for additional login, because the users are already...

...My paper will attempt to show three marketing opportunities and how these opportunities will affect the firm’s finances, public relations and the reasoning why the firms should pursue my suggestions. Dmoz is currently the only search engine with all human editors. Given that fact, they have managed to index 3.5 million page with over 400,000 categories. Dmoz is unique because each site that is submitted must be reviewed by an actual human before it will appear in the listing. While it may seem “old-fashioned” to some, the result is a highly reliable index of only legitimate, properly categorized sites. Dmoz's directory structure is very hard, if not impossible to fool. In fact, although submitting sites are permitted to select certain categories, the human editors may place the site elsewhere if they believe it to be a better fit. This gives searchers the confidence that they will find what they are actually looking for when they enter a certain category (http://www.search-engine-site.net/dmoz.html) AltaVista, as an Overture company, seems to use a very similar algorithm and spidering process as Yahoo. However, there are a few ways in which AltaVista sets itself apart. AltaVista provides the most obvious advantage to those conducting specific multimedia searches. Directly above the search field are a number of tabs (Images, MP3/Audio, Video, etc.) that allow the user to search for files as well as webpages.
