...When doing any kind of research accuracy of the source is most important. Using information from a source that is not accurate undermines credibility and becomes a waste of valuable time. If research is for a college class, grades will suffer if quality information is not used. I chose “Hey! I’m Strapped to this Board and Can’t Get Up!” (Merrifield & Battle, 2007). Patients frequently arrive in the ED on a back board, and the number one complaint of these people is always the discomfort of being on the board. Using criteria from Evaluating Internet Sources and Sites: a Tutorial (Sharkey, 2007) five criteria were used to determine the credibility of this article. The five criteria noted in the tutorial are accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage (Sharkey, 2007). The accuracy of the authors indicated a good knowledge of their subject. They used one citation for the article. I didn’t recognize the authors of this article, but their positions in their ED and their certification as emergency nurses indicates they have a strong knowledge of the topic. The authors’ article was published in 2007, but the reference they cited was written in 1997. However, the topic of removing patients from backboards is an age old problem in the ED, so, the information remains current. The information the authors share in their article is very useful for other facilities, and their topic was explored thoroughly. This article had pros and cons, but overall, I trust the article...

...CRITIQUING INTERNET SOURCES Sue Reeves GEN/499 Dr. Elizabeth Brown January 19, 2015 Critiquing Internet Sources The internet is filled with information. Podcasts, videos, and blogs are the most used forms of information on the internet. Three factors that need to be used when evaluating internet sources for use in research are authority, can the speaker be authenticated, and is he qualified to speak on the subject, accuracy, can the information be found in other credible sources, and currency is the information current or when was the last revision to the page? The topic is Elder Abuse, a blog, video, and podcast, have been evaluated pertaining to the subject to show the credibility and reliability of the sources. A blog is a website containing a writer’s or group of writers’ own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having images and links to other websites (Oxford Dictionaries, 2015). The blog Elder Care and Technology is written by a group of writers’ in the Walton Law Firm. The blog explains in detail the impact of modern technology on Elder Abuse. The law firm based in San Diego, California specializes in court cases representing abused elders and their families. The Law firm can be authenticated and has been successful in prosecuting and retaining damages against nursing homes and personal care homes for years (Walton Law Firm, 2014). The blog does...

...Analyzing Internet Sources What I learned was how to choose which web site were better to use for educational purposes. I learned some important facts about using the internet to find resources and to know if the web site is a credible source. When looking at the web site it is a good idea to look at when the site was last updated, if it is a .org or .edu they tend to be more reliable. When looking to see if the site was good to use for the global warming project there were some good sites to use and then there were also some bad ones. The good ones were that were most updated and the ones were they were not asking for money for you to buy the information from them. These are just some of the things I learned for these activities. The things I did not learn for these this activity was that if there was a sure way to tell if the web site was credible. I know some ways that will help me tell but how do I know if the last update is the correct date or by the authors name. What if the author is lying about their name and they just made up everything on the site. I think I have a pretty good understanding of when a site is okay to use but I just wish there was a full proof method to it in finding out. I do not want to accidently use a site that was false information where they public can put anything they want to on it for an academic...

...Arturo G Pizarro GEN105 Week 3 Analyzing Internet Sources 1) What are the three or more best practices you learned about using the Internet for Academic Purposes? How do you think you might use them? Using the internet for academic research is different to using it for leisure and pleasure. Making best use of search engines help you identify information on a particular subject. One of the common search engines is Google, which, personally, helps me a lot when I need to find something on the internet. Also, I think using Gateways can help you, because they are good sources of quality-checked resources, which have been selected carefully from many websites sorted into specific subjects. Finally, using the information in a well manner, because when you use sources of information, books, articles, and internet sources; all that needs to be acknowledge by citing the work. 2) How can you determine if the information on a website is reputable and worthwhile for a research paper? Anyone can put anything on the internet. Whenever you need to verify for the information that you are trying to investigate, many things need to be checked, like if the information is out of date, or if it is distorted, or simply untrue. So when you find what you are looking for, it is always good to consider who wrote it, or the credentials, or who is this written for. A key of confirming that the information is accurate, up-to-date, reliable, and appropriate is to check this information...

...Laquan Gordon * Why should students know how to identify credible information on the Internet? * * Students should know how to identify credible information on the internet because the internet is not just designed for research. Though it is fast and convenient there is no reliable assistance when you are confused. Anyone can put anything on the internet so if you just take everything for what it is there is a possibility to get not so credible information. Doing research on the internet as a student is very important and many students use this information for papers or other assignments. Without the ability of identifying credible a student runs the risk of basing an assignment around information that is misguided, disproven, or flat out untrue. This is why students should learn how to not only gather information but also evaluate it for accuracy and credibility. * * Describe three strategies that students can use to identify which search results are worth exploring when using the Internet to research a topic? There are quite a few strategies students can use to identify which search results are worth exploring. Firstly, looking at the URL is the most important strategy to me. Looking for ".org", ".gov", or ".edu" in the URL is very important. The website name is also important when doing research, remembering that sites like Wikipedia are not as credible as TheNationalGeographic.com, for example. Most things ending in “.com” may not be the most...

...Information Technology – The Advantages and Perils of using the Internet as a source Introduction In today’s society, the internet is a major part of our daily lives. We use it to read the news, communicate with our friends & family, upload and edit photos and videos, for research and education, booking travel, shopping & banking – the list goes on. The internet is a sea of information comprised of many facts, figures and opinions; which makes it very easy to get caught up or lost in. Advantages There is no doubt about it, the internet makes the world and its various wonders just an easy click away. You barely need to step outside your house to get what you need anymore. In the last 10 years, the internet has made enormous improvements with advancing technology. – it’s faster and contains more information than any other information resource. If you are looking for information on a product, person, service or similar the internet makes it extremely easy to find the information. Message boards and the like also make it simple to write and share your opinion with others as well as get others’ opinions on topics that may interest you. An increase can also be seen with people using the internet to research medical conditions after they have been diagnosed. It provides a sense of ‘control’ after they have left the doctor’s office to be able to find out more. The power of search engines such as Google are also astounding. Users can type almost anything into the search...

...Individual Analyzing Internet Sources Week 2 What did you learn? I learned more than I expected from the Pearson student lab activities. In the first activity I knew most of the information presented, but in the second activity I learned quite a bit about researching a topic. I did not know that the URL .org is no longer limited to a non-profit or research organization; which makes it harder to use that as a reliable resource but it can still be useful. I learned it is important to look for non-bias opinions, information with publish dates are resourceful, research based, and the best domains to find good information on are .org, .gov, .mil, and .edu. Although just because the site has one of these domains it does not mean the resource is accurate or correct necessarily. What did you not learn? Well as I said in the previous paragraph in the first activity most of the information that was present I acquired before. The comparison between the library and the internet are basic knowledge to most people. The Library is based for research purposes, with trained staff to help you, but closes at certain times. The internet has multiple reasons for use, with no trained assistance, but it never closes. They each have great traits that can be used for study. I also knew it is not safe to purchase items online you must be careful when doing this. You need to do research and make sure the site is reliable. Some people think because a paper has a title and author that it is true but...

...In this modern world, abundance in information through the internet is taking over the role of tradition libraries. However, when it comes to academic research, libraries still holds its importance. Many thousands of web pages exist, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet instead of a traditional library. Many of these are personal opinions, with the authors ranging from commercial sites to professional organizations. This essay aims to compare and contrast these two major sources of information for use by students in academic written work from the perspective of sources and reliability of information A library has a very systematic way in which information is catalogued to enable searchers to locate the desired information. From the individual perspective, more information related to the academic is obtained especially for students as well as it is the key source of information including books, journals, and archival materials such as document collections. From the practical perspective, library contained more precise information and the most reliable source. Libraries are considered appropriate and even necessary sources of information for college-level work and research. It is also best for credible information quickly and for full-text, scholarly articles. Before a book or journal appears in a university library, it has usually gone through a number of checks to make sure the information in it is reliable. The articles and books in the library are...

...Week2: General Internet Skills I learned some important information literacy basics from listening to the gentlemen talk about an overview of the Library, Internet and some wrap-up information. I also learned about some critical analyzing internet sources. I learned that the Library was designed for research papers, speeches, projects, and essays. Information that you find in the Library is usually credible information. That is different from using the internet because when you use the internet to find resources, you take a big risk using that information as credible. You should also look on the internet, when you find a source that you were researching on, to see if you can find factual information within the other sources that you are looking at. Also, when you are using the internet for research purposes, there are no trained specialists available to help you if you should need any help. When you are using the internet you should use these strategies for your search results: 1. Always keep in mind what you need to find or locate 2. Examine the URL 3. Examine the synopsis or short description of the site 4. Bookmark sites that look useful to you 5. Examine the related searches list You should have strong information literacy skills while using the internet. You should also check for accuracy and credibility of any research you have done. Music or pictures that you have downloaded for your own personal use or for school projects cannot be used unless you pay or cite the...

...GEN 105 Week 2 Analyzing Internet Sources I have learned that no matter what you do when you are working with internet sources; you need to make sure that they are credible sources. It is very easy to be mistaken with the sources that you are working with. To get caught up with what you are doing, and mistake a bad source for a credible source. I have also learned that you need to make sure you give credit where credit is due. Making sure that you cite your sources is very important. Your websites that you visit need to be good websites as well; they need to be able to give you information that will help you with your paper work. Websites like Wikipedia and YouTube are not necessarily websites that you would use for a college essay paper. You would need to go with the websites that have the .edu and .gov in the URL they are credible websites and have reliable information on their sites! You also need to make sure that you stay away from websites that have blogs and that are trying to sell things to you; these sites are not credible, and will not get you anywhere. The main thing is to make sure that you are double-checking that your sources are credible. Making sure that you cite everything that you do, and you should be fine! What I would have liked to learn in this exercise is mainly how to keep from using bad sources. I mean I know that the exercise cannot tell you everything, but it would have been helpful if it could have touched on it a little more and been a little...

...Discrimination against a racial or ethnic group becomes a larger problem when practiced by an institution—especially a governmental one. Do you think institutional discrimination is common? What do you think it looks like? I do think discrimination is still common especially in government institution. A recent example that came to mind was the Los Angelis Police Department verses Ex-Cop Christopher Dorner who was on the run from killing 3 innocent people because of discrimination against him on the L.A. Police force. Christopher Dorner claims of police corruption and discrimination against the black people and also called the black people bad names. Per his 11 pages manifesto published, he stated unfortunately after reporting the incident to his supervisors and the police internal affairs, nothing was done but rather broken their supposed “Blue Line” After exhausting all possible legal avenue he last resort was to attack and kill members of the family of his ex-cop colleagues who discriminated against him. Discrimination in my opinion is ugly and sometimes the negative results are unbelievable. In this example, it was a sad situation for innocent people to get killed because of institutional discrimination. Response to Steevi, Yes discrimination turns out to be very harmful sometimes. Making it harder for an entire ethnic group to live in poverty and ensuring life is harder for them by discrimination against them is really shocking. An example of another...

...27 September 2012 The Internet has evolved from a business use-protocol to a necessity at home and an invaluable tool to college students worldwide. Since the boom of the Information Superhighway, otherwise known as the Internet, anonymous credibility has been given to anyone with access to the Internet. Before the Internet became what it is today, college professors required the use of the library for research and encyclopedias for accredited facts from known contributors to today’s society. It is said that, “Once upon a time, Encyclopedia Britannica recruited Einstein, Freud, Curie, Mencken and even Houdini as contributors. The names helped the encyclopedia bolster its credibility.”(Stross 331) The new millennium of college students has since abandoned the gothic ruins of brick and mortar for modern technology. Hence, as an evolving community of college students, we must consider the use of websites such as Wikipedia for credible sources or not use them at all. The Internet contains a history of creditable sources. It also contains a legacy of anonymous sources. We have relied on the reviews and opinions of others to prove the validity of said information on the Internet and stop challenging it when we read the answer that strikes a chord in our cognitive judgments. If this process continues to be the norm, printed sources such as encyclopedias will leave people saying “This was written by one person? Then looked at by only two or three other people? How can I trust that...

...What is an ‘academic reference’? An academic reference is a book or journal article that has been “peer-reviewed” by academic specialists in the particular field. Academic references are considered to have more legitimacy and credibility than popular sources for this reason. Popular sources such as newspapers, social media, websites and blogs are not academic references and may have no claims to legitimacy or credibility. Why is academic referencing important at university? At university we are trying to develop critical thinking in students. Not “critical” in terms of negative thinking, but in terms of being able to analyse information and make informed comments about how valid the views expressed in the source may be. By using academic references you show that you can compare sources of legitimate information. Make sure you have a majority of academic references in your assignments. While you may use and reference popular sources, make sure most of your references are academic references. Ask the lecturer if you have any concerns or comments about either referencing or any aspect of your study, including after you receive marked assignments. ____________________________________________________________________________ Common types of academic references used in The Business School at UB. 1. Citation of a reference in your assignment (“in-text citation”). Method: author(s) and date of publication. Example: Retrenchment has become a part of contemporary...

The purpose of the present study was to extend previous literature to examine the moderating effect of PBS (protective behavioral strategies) on the relationship between binge drinking and alcohol-related problems. Findings indicated that PBS moderated the binge drinking-alcohol problems relationship for each of the four measures of binge drinking. I will be using this source because it explains the psychological effects that could cause college or university students to start binge drinking. It also explains the problems binge drinking can cause students. The source is a very reliable source that has multiple authors who are either college or university professors or department of education, giving me respectful and reliable information. Ryan, J.
