INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this research paper is to provide an Interpretive Journey into the New Testament text, Acts 6:1-7. The author, Luke, penned; In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” 5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith (Acts 6:1-7, NIV). I will use the five-step process of the basic Interpretive Journey in hopes of providing at least a meaning, principle and application of the text as viewed by the biblical audience and applicable for today’s Christians.
STEP ONE: GRASP THE TEXT IN THEIR TOWN
Summarize the original situation and the meaning of the text for the biblical audience.
The Hellenistic Jews (probably from the Diaspora who had returned to Palestine) spoke Greek where as the Hebraic Jews

Interpretive Journey Paper

...Interpretive Journey Paper Deuteronomy 22:8 BIBL 350 (Summer 2014 350-B06) Josephine Myhand Professor James C. Baird Submission Date: (07/08/14) Introduction “The book of Deuteronomy is the most important book in the Old Testament from the standpoint of God's revelation to man." Deuteronomy is a book of the law for the Israelites in which God gave Moses instruction on the covenant them to keep His commandments. There were charges for the children of Israelites to pay attention to the laws that were presented. It is a book that showed God’s faithfulness time and time again. The Israelites would follow the law but then they would break the law. Because of the love God had for them He forgave them. God wanted them take advantage of the laws of the covenant and keep them. Moses would not reach the promise land with them but he did give them instructions on the aspects of life when they reach the promise land. ``They had low houses, ill built, and flat at the top, as they are generally in the east; for they cover their houses with a flat roof or floor, so that you may walk about as far as the houses go, and the neighbors walk over the tops of their houses to visit one another; and sometimes in the summer they slept on the top of them.'' 1 Step 1 Grasp the text in their town Summarize the original situation and the meaning of the text for the biblical...

Seventy Weeks

...concern for me. The prophet Daniel completed his memoirs around 530 B.C. and is one of three books compiled during Israel’s Babylonian captivity . Many scholars have debated over the true date and authorship of the book due to its pinpoint accuracy when predicting future events. One of the most intriguing and heavily disputed passages pertains to the prophecy known as the “Seventy Sevens”. In this paper, Daniel’s Prophecy of Seventy Weeks will be exegetically interpreted with a focus on identifying the purpose of the prophecy, the starting time and event for the prophecy, the division of the weeks within the prophecy, and the details pertaining to the fulfillment of this prophecy. The Interpretive Method The prophecy of Seventy Weeks is recorded in the ninth chapter of Daniel, verses 24-27. These four verses are often considered to be the most difficult to understand text recorded in the book . To help understand the depth and meaning of this passage one can benefit from applying four key factors to their study; better know as the interpretive method. The interpretive method consists of four main principles; how the passage applied to the original audience, the differences between the original audience and the current one, the theological principle, and how those principles should be applied to Christians today . Original Audience In order to determine how...

Sustainability

...Without question, "sustainability" is the latest buzzword in many sectors, public and private, for-profit and nonprofit. Is it just the latest fad? This paper, the first phase of a larger research project, agues that sustainability is "creating permanent shift in the very nature of business." Sustainability integrates three spheres--profits, the planet, and people--often viewed as competing or contradictory. How can management integrate them to boost the "triple bottom line?" This study identifies the leadership challenges through a literature analysis and emphasizes that measurement tools often miss the point: the pursuit of an organization's particular brand of success is a journey, not a destination. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Introduction "Sustainability" has come to have many different meanings. It's the latest buzzword among business, government, and nonprofit entities. Business leaders must be wondering if it's just the latest management fad of a concept that will fundamentally change how businesses are managed and measured. This paper is based on the notion that sustainability is more than a fad, but rather is creating a permanent shift in the very nature of business. Since the advent of the paradigm of sustainable development in the 1980s, the private sector has been shifting from a narrow economic conception of responsibility toward a comprehensive approach that attempts to balance economic objectives with environmental pressures and changing societal expectations...

Compare Literary Works

...Compare and Contrasting Literary Works ENG125 June, 9, 2014 Instructor Sandra Heilman Compare and Contrasting Literary Works Foundations of literature are important because it consists of the structural makeup of a poem or short story.  This foundation includes the content, style, and form of each piece that offers insight to a deeper and personal understanding for the reader. Poetry by Pablo Neruda and You, Reader by Billy Collins are not the exceptions to the rule. These two poems share a common bond; a thread that takes the reader on a journey of discovery, through their creativity and creative process.     An author has the ability to use their imagination in a way like no other; to share thoughts and feelings about real or imagined experiences. It is through the use of wording these thoughts and feelings come to life, allowing the reader a glimpse inside the mind and heart of the author. This is where the bridge between the author and audience connect. In most cases, reading material is selected because of a first page or introduction that speaks to the reader. This content is what hooks the reader into a world that is interesting or oddly familiar, causing them to want to know more. When literature, whether it is a story, poem, quote, or even a movie script can speak to us on a deep level, it is a well written piece. It carries the ability to...

Nonprofit Board Governance

...forgive, flexible, easy to change, humble and free to explore. The same can said of a board member working out of a “generative mindset.” A child like heart is inquisitive, pure and full of wonder. Give a child a kaleidoscope and they are immediately fascinated, filled with wonder and amazement. Creating a dynamic governing board can and should be filled with this same type of humility, wonder and excitement that is bound in the heart of a child. This paper seeks to define and explore the ways generative governance can instill a greater sense of purpose, a child like wonder, humility and learning into our organizations today. These principles of generative thinking will be applied to the Mission Center of HOPE, a newly formed 501(c)3 organization that is in its infancy, in hopes that a culture of inquiry and generative mindset can be instilled in the very foundation of the organization. The MCOH, being a new organization, has the amazing opportunity to foster a learning organization from the very beginning. This paper will also show how generative thinking can be built organization a mechanism by...

Technology & Relationships

...Essay #1 – “I Search” Exploratory Essay 1500-2500 words (15% of your Final Grade) This paper is designed to teach the writer and the reader something valuable about a chosen topic and about the nature of searching and discovery. As opposed to the standard research paper where a writer usually assumes a detached and objective stance, the “I Search” paper allows you to relate your personal experience engaged with some aspect of a topic, to hunt for facts and opinions firsthand, and to provide a step-by-step record of the search process. It’s part research paper, part personal narrative, part reflection. • First step: choose a controversial topic broadly pertaining to digital technology, digital media, “the internet,” television, or modern computing technology that truly interests you—specifically some problem or concern you want to be more informed about (use Homework #1 as a launching point). The topic, however, has to be argumentatively rich, meaning that there have to be many different viewpoints on the issue. • Second step: rather than starting with a thesis or claim, you’re going to begin with a question or problem spurred by some personal experience or exploration. Think of yourself like an investigative journalist or social scientist: if you’re writing about online communities, immerse yourself in one; if you’re writing about internet/television/cell phone addiction, deprive yourself for a few days; if you’re investigating some activity, try engaging in that...

Evidence Based Practice

...Submitted to Sharon Mooney, RN, MSN in partial fulfillment of NR 460R Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing Regis University April 9, 2010 Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice Throughout history, nursing practice has experienced change. Florence Nightingale initiated the greatest change in nursing in the mid-1800’s when she gathered data regarding the morbidity and mortality of soldiers (Chitty & Black, 2007). Nightingale recognized there was a need for change to improve patient outcomes. Her determination to provide the best possible care, based on the evidence she gathered, has inspired a profession. Today, the process of using research to care for patients is referred to as evidence-based practice. The purpose of this paper is to define and explain the importance of evidence-based practice, discuss qualitative and quantitative research studies which affect medical-surgical areas, and barriers preventing research utilization and how they may be overcome. Definition of Evidence-Based Practice There are numerous definitions of evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is defined by Boswell and Cannon (2007) as, “A research-based, decision-making process used to guide the delivery of holistic patient care by nurses” (p. 340). Cope (as cited in Chitty & Black, 2007), defines EBP as “using the best available research findings to make clinical decisions that are most effective and beneficial for patients” (p. 275). It is clear throughout the spectrum of definitions...

The Big Bad Wold Is Heartless

...Dear Reader, Below you will find my intellectual journey as I have undergone a critical reflection on various forms of interpretations of children’s literature. This paper is essentially an academic endeavor, but it does differ from an academic essay in that the conclusion is reached in the same way an insight is formed: by starting out with an idea, thesis, antithesis and finally sublation. The resolution is an epiphany of sorts that, like a quest, comes only at the end, after having undergone various trials. I would like to think that this piece of writing exhibits the point I wish to instill: the necessity of imaginative freedom in myth. Let Absurdity Reign Erich Fromm interprets the story of Little Red Riding Hood as the “expression of a deep antagonism against men and sex” (TFL 241). Men (who are represented by the wolf) are seen as “ruthless and cunning animals, who turn the sexual act into a cannibalistic ritual” (CFT 7). A man is a heartless animal driven by the two most primary animal faculties: lust and hunger. Susan Brownmiller contrasts this position with her interpretation of the same tale as a “cultural story that holds the gender bottom line by perpetuating the notion that women are at once victims of male violence even as they must position themselves as beneficiaries of male protection”(CFT 8). Thus, according to Fromm, it is the wolf himself that symbolizes men, whilst for Brownmiller the story itself perpetuates a message of gender prejudice and stereotyping...

Beethoven's Musical

...For Beethoven, the sonata form is not a scheme that can be used in caprice one day and abandoned the next. This form dominates everything he imagines and composes; it is the very mark of his creation and the form of his thought – an inherent form, a natural one. (Edwin Fischer, Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas).       Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas constitute a great treasure that embodies a part of the human eternity. Numerous pianists and musicologists have researched or studied them, trying to impart to their students or readers the prodigality of these true musical riches.       Beethoven holds a key role in the transformation and evolution of the sonata form. Even if he maintains the characteristics initially set by his predecessors, Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven imposes on the sonata his strong personality creating a new, impressive, form of art, in which his own life, with its joys and sorrows, is projected. With Beethoven the musical theme acquires remarkable proportions, of such strength, that it imposes itself over the listener’s attention and memory. As the French composer, Vincent d’ Indy once said, with Beethoven, the musical theme turns into an concept that spreads throughout the hole work making it easily recognizable even if harmonic, modal or tonal aspects change.       The fundamental principle of organization of the Beethoven piano sonata is the tonality. We can say that Beethoven perceived tonality as the key to any composition, since it leads to the true...

Political Discourse Between American and British Corpus

...perspective in terms of the cultural and socio-political phenomenon, in which a lot of attention is placed on the elements ascertaining the pragmatic, variable, and cognitive details of the British and US's political discourses: The inaugural speeches of four US presidents and party political manifestos of two British political parties during the period between 1974 and 1997 are analysed. The main purpose of undertaking this kind of comparative study of the British and the American political discourses is quite evident, these discourses symbolize intriguing and complex methods of cultural values and political differences as depicted in the respective linguistic contexts. The key findings are that metaphors from the domains of conflict, journey and buildings are general across the divide. However, the British corpus contain metaphors that draw on the source domain of plants whereas the American corpus hugely draws on source domains like fire and light and the physical environments that are excluded in the context of the British corpus. Therefore, the variations offer quite a significant dissimilarity in the use of metaphors among the two set of political discourse and cultural differences. Keywords: Metaphor, Corpus, discourse, manifesto, and politics. Introduction Political and socio-cultural dimensions have been applied extensively in all kinds of linguistic studies on the...
