Into the Woods Report.

Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a musical format that follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel-all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them. Some people think that “Into the Woods” is like a Disney story but eventually it’s not , while it appears that Disney does have a monopoly over characters like Cinderella and Rapunzel, the story was not born out of the mouse House, but the studio is producing it. “Into the Woods” is based on the idea of “Once upon a time”, but no actual Disney characters. These are completely different characters, all coming from Stephen Sondheim’s 1986 musical of the same name.

Stephen Sondheim
American composer Stephen Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, in New York City. After early practice at songwriting, his knowledge of musical theater was influenced by master lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, who served as a mentor. Sondheim's contributions to West Side Story and Gypsy in the 1950s brought him recognition as a rising star of Broadway. Known for the startling complexity of his lyricism and music, his major works for the theater also include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods.
Early Life and Musical Interests of Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, in New York City. His parents, Herbert and Janet (née Fox) Sondheim, worked in New York's garment industry; his father was a dress manufacturer and his mother was a designer. They divorced in 1942 and Sondheim moved to Doylestown, Pennsylvania with his mother. He began studying piano and organ at a young age, and he was already practicing songwriting as a student at the George School. In Pennsylvania, Sondheim became friends with the son of Broadway lyricist and producer Oscar Hammerstein II, who gave the young Sondheim advice and tutelage in musical theater, and served as a surrogate father during a time of tumult. In his teens, Sondheim had penned a satire about his school, the musical By George!, which he thought his mentor would love and thus asked for feedback. Hammerstein in fact thought the project needed tons of work and offered honest criticism, which Sondheim would later see as invaluable. Sondheim also worked as an assistant on 1947's Allegro, one of Hammerstein's theater collaborations with composer Richard Rodgers, with the experience having long-lasting implications on the young composer's approach to his work.Sondheim attended Williams College, where he majored in music. After graduating from the school in 1950, he studied further with avant-garde composer Milton Babbitt and moved to New York City.
James Lapine
JAMES LAPINE was born in Mansfield, Ohio and lived there until his early teens when his family moved to Stamford, Connecticut. He attended public schools before entering Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he majored in History. He went on to get an MFA in Design from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. After graduate school, he moved to New York City where he worked part-time as a waiter; a page and tour guide at NBC; a free-lance photographer and graphic designer; and an architectural preservationist for the Architectural League of NY. One of his free-lance jobs was designing the magazine of the Yale School of Drama, Yale/Theater. The dean of the School of Drama, Robert Brustein subsequently offered Lapine a full-time job designing all of the printed materials for the School of Drama and the Yale Repertory Theatre as well as a faculty position teaching a course in advertising design. While at Yale, his students urged him to direct a play during the annual January period when both faculty and students undertook a project outside of their areas of study or expertise. At their suggestion Lapine directed a Gertrude Stein play, PHOTOGRAPH. The play was five acts, and just three pages in length. Assembling students and friends, it was presented in New Haven and came to the attention of director Lee Breuer, who helped arrange for a small performance space in Soho to produce the work for three weeks. The production was enthusiastically received and won Lapine an Obie award. Lapine was then approached to create a new piece for the Music-Theatre Group. He wrote and directed a workshop version of TWELVE DREAMS, a work inspired by a Jungian case history. The play was later presented at the Public Theatre and revived by Lincoln Center Theatre. Lapine eventually left the visual arts for a career in the theatre where he has also written and directed the plays TABLE SETTINGS; LUCK, PLUCK and VIRTUE; THE MOMENT WHEN; FRAN’S BED; MRS. MILLER DOES HER THING; and ACT ONE, a stage adaptation of the famous Moss Hart's autobiography. On Broadway he has written the book for and directed Stephen Sondheim’s SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE; INTO THE WOODS; PASSION; and the multi-media revue SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM. He also directed MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG as part of Encores Series at New York City Center. With William Finn he has collaborated on MARCH OF THE FALSETTOS and FALSETTOLAND, later presented on Broadway as FALSETTOS; A NEW BRAIN; MUSCLE; and LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. He has also directed on Broadway David Henry Hwang’s GOLDEN CHILD; THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK; Michel Legrand’s AMOUR; THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE; and the 2012 revival of ANNIE. Among his many off-Broadway offerings were three Shakespeare productions for the Public Theatre. With Frank Rich he co-produced and also directed the HBO documentary SIX BY SONDHEIM for which he received an Emmy nomination and a Peabody award. Lapine wrote the screenplay for the film version of INTO THE WOODS directed by Rob Marshall and is completing the film CUSTODY which he wrote and directed starring Viola Davis, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Hayden Panettiere and Ellen Burstyn. He is slated to direct a revival of the musical FALSETTOS on Broadway this Fall. He has been nominated for twelve Tony Awards winning on three occasions and has received five Drama Desk Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. In 2011, he was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame and in 2015 was the recipient of the Mr. Abbott Award presented by the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers for a lifetime of exceptional achievement in the theatre. Lapine is a member of the Dramatist Guild Council and for the last fifteen years has been a mentor for TDF's Open Doors Program. He currently lives in New York City.

The Woods

...English 101 October 1, 2012 The Woods The tops of the trees were visible from my childhood home, yet they seemed so far away. A trio of neighborhood pre-teen boys, including me, would frequently make the trek to the woods to quench our thirst for adventure. No matter our agenda for the day, the woods would always accommodate. We would start our journey by walking across a perpetually soggy horse pasture, dodging land mines left by the horses. The smells of fresh cut hay and horse manure followed in our wake. Our first stop in the woods was always the stream that ran the entire length. With a running start, a young boy could almost jump the width of the stream, landing a few feet short on the opposite bank. We would descend the bank and hop from rock to rock, trying to keep our tennis shoes dry. When that failed, we trod down the center of the stream, lifting up flat rocks to uncover unsuspecting crayfish. We did not know that people actually ate these peculiar looking creatures. In the winter, we would compete to see who could stand on the ice of the frozen stream the longest. The stream would always win, as the ice gave way with a resounding crack. We walked home with heavy feet, dragging rock-hard pant legs frozen up to the knees. Older kids rode their motorcycles in the woods and adjacent field, as the high-pitched engine whine and smells of two cycle oil mixed with gasoline filled the air. Eventually, my neighborhood trio had motorcycles of our own, and our spinning...

Minimum should be 3/8” for structural integrity. Plywood is sold in 24” x 48” sheets, so ideally we would have to buy 3 sheets for the outer walls. Framing Plywood starts to chip/splinter when cut in small pieces, so it is preferable to use hardwood in the framing. Framing consists of four rectangles with supporting vertical braces. Also, the edges of plywood aren't really aesthetically pleasing. Given the size of the model, the beams and studs should be at least 1/2” inch thick. Into the Woods

...I enjoyed the Into the Woods broadway musical. It meshed together many of my childhood fairy tales and stories, creating an unique plot for the musical. The main theme that stood out, in my opinion, was greed. The musical shed light on how many people have selfish tactics and will do anything in their power to get what they want. Jack wanted gold, the married couple wanted a baby, and Cinderella's husband wanted a beautiful woman. Each person did what could to get what they wanted, and everything seemed fine. Just like in reality, everything that glitters isn't gold. Once each person had what they wanted, things started to backfire on them because of the way they recieved these different wishes. Everybody still wanted more than what they had, or at least wanted to add to what they already had attained. The musical also showed how easy it was to lose things, once you have taken them for granted. Jack's mother died, the wife of the married husband died as well. If I had to create an alternate ending, I don't think I would have had anyone die. I did appreciate how the musical was shedding light onto great values and life lessons, but I would have altered death being involved. When I think of my favorite fairy tales, they all ended with happy endings. I wanted the musical to end that way, maybe the people could have been punished for their wrong doings. I would have maybe had everyone lose their prized possesion, but not their family member or spouse. It is still supposed to be a...

Ecology of Wood

...(disambiguation) and Heartwood (disambiguation). For small forests, see Woodland. For wood as a commodity, see Lumber. For other uses, see Wood (disambiguation). Page semi-protected Wood surface, showing several features Wood is a hard, fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees,[1] or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in tree roots or in other plants such as shrubs.[citation needed] In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also mediates the transfer of water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber. The Earth contains about one trillion tonnes of wood, which grows at a rate of 10 billion tonnes per year. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 billion cubic meters of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction...

A Death in the Woods

...A Death in the Woods - Sherwood Anderson She was an old woman and lived on a farm near the town in which I lived. All country and small-town people have seen such old women, but no one knows much about them. Such an old woman comes into town driving an old worn-out horse or she comes afoot carrying a basket. She may own a few hens and have eggs to sell. She brings them in a basket and takes them to a grocer. There she trades them in. She gets some salt pork and some beans. Then she gets a pound or two of sugar and some flour. Afterwards she goes to the butcher's and asks for some dog-meat. She may spend ten or fifteen cents, but when she does she asks for something. Formerly the butchers gave liver to any one who wanted to carry it away. In our family we were always having it. Once one of my brothers got a whole cow's liver at the slaughter-house near the fairgrounds in our town. We had it until we were sick of it. It never cost a cent. I have hated the thought of it ever since. The old farm woman got some liver and a soup-bone. She never visited with any one, and as soon as she got what she wanted she lit out for home. It made quite a load for such an old body. No one gave her a lift. People drive right down a road and never notice an old woman like that. There was such an old woman who used to come into town past our house one Summer and Fall when I was a young boy and was sick with what was called inflammatory rheumatism. She went home later carrying a heavy pack on her...

Touch Wood

...Touch Wood Touch Wood is based on the author¹s own life when she was growing as a Jewish girl during the German invasion of France. In 1940, Renée and her family were living in Alsace, France, where nothing ever changed. No one expected anything unusual to happen. Then one day, a war with Germany is announced on the radio. The Germans wanted to annex Alsace and forced the Jews to leave. France was split into two zones- the Free Zone and the German occupied zone. Renée¹s father chose for them to move to Paris, because it is a big city where he can find work, and also because Renée¹s mother has childhood friends there. So, Renée, her parents, her two younger sisters, and their blind grandmother move into a crowded apartment in the German-occupied zone. Renée was disappointed in Paris when she arrived. She finds that everything seems to be smaller in Paris. Eventually, her new neighborhood becomes more of a home and helps Renée to miss Alsace a little less. Renée¹s parents had left Poland and then Hungary to find a freer, better life. They settled in France and thought they¹d be safe. Then Adolf Hitler, a German man who hated Jewish people, started trouble all over again. First, seven synagogues were blown up. Then, the Germans created a curfew prohibiting Jews to go during certain hours. Any Jew caught in the street after curfew would be taken as hostage. Also, all Jewish people must wear a Star of David on their shirts. An ordinance is created requiring all Jewish...

Britton Woods

...The Bretton Woods system is commonly understood to refer to the international monetary regime that prevailed from the end of World War II until the early 1970s. Taking its name from the site of the 1944 conference that created the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development), the Bretton Woods system was history's first example of a fully negotiated monetary order intended to govern currency relations among sovereign states. In principle, the regime was designed to combine binding legal obligations with multilateral decision-making conducted through an international organization, the IMF, endowed with limited supranational authority. In practice the initial scheme, as well as its subsequent development and ultimate demise, were directly dependent on the preferences and policies of its most powerful member, the United States. The World Bank and its sister organization, the International Monetary Fund, were created at Bretton Woods New Hampshire in 1944. Together they are referred to as the Bretton Woods Institutions or BWIs. The IMF's original mandate sets forth three main objectives: 1. To promote international monetary cooperation; 2. To facilitate the expansion of international trade; 3. To promote exchange rate stability. The IMF achieves these objectives by advising member countries on their economic policies and by providing conditional assistance to member countries experiencing balance of payments...

A Walk in the Woods

...PERSONAL: THE FOREST Personal: The Forest Susan Jones DeVry Univeristy PERSONAL: THE FOREST 2. Personal: The Forest “A walk in the woods” is a chapter in the book, Omnivore’s Dilema by Michael Pollan. This chapter reminds me of where I was raised in the back woods of Kentucky. Our property was attached to one of the largest forests in Eastern Kentucky, known as The Daniel Boone National Forest. This forest is beautiful in any direction that one can see. From the beautiful tall oaks, to the large pine trees and their needles covering the spongy forest floor. There are beautiful green ferns, leafy vegetation, thickets and rock cliffs. There are so many wonderful things to see and hear in this forest, which provide a natural home and shelter for many animals to live. My experiences and memories of the forest and hunting have lead me to have mixed feelings about hunting which will be examined in the following paragraphs. Omnivore’s Dilema has brought back memories from home, and yes that is the back woods where I grew up. In many ways, it is quite easy for me to relate to the chapters written about hunting by Mr. Pollan. Hunting is something my father and my brothers enjoyed doing together. It wasn’t as much as a sport to them it was a necessity. Actually it was our meat source for our daily meals. There were lots of different game to hunt; deer, rabbit...
