...History Generosity is a quality, the desire to give to others without being asked. Before even the enactment of any legislation, philanthropists helped to shape the way we organize to support the less fortunate. The history of charitable organizations in the United States originated almost at the same time as the formation of our new nation. Benjamin Franklin, was one the founders of our nations and the earliest American philanthropists. He founded the University of Pennsylvania to educate youth. The early setters formed charitable and voluntary associations to help with issues of the era like education, orphanages, and illness (Arnsberger, Ludlum, Riley & Stanton, 2008 p. 1). Young Americans were able to form charitable organizations to fill gaps in the social welfare programs. Back then, charities were mainly hospitals and orphanages support by religious groups and wealthy individuals. During the 19th century, these organizations were controlled and founded by private corporations or a person (Arnsberger, Ludlum, Riley & Stanton, 2008 p. 2). The bloom of the American industry gave birth to bigger corporations; at the same time, the increase of more formal charitable organizations. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that government began paying more attention to this new sector. The first legislation the government imposed was in1894, the Tariff Act that established a flat two percent tax to corporate income, but excluded charities. However, the Tariff Act was...

...Case 5: Adopting International Accounting Standards Intro to International Business – 1. Both business enterprises and investors can benefit from the adoption of international accounting standards because they do not have to worry about losing money due to different exchange rates. In regards to business ventures, it will help in the long run with a systematic way to compare prices. Although the process is held up slightly for United States entrepreneurs, the process is still great. According to an article published by the NYTimes, “American companies must use rules established by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, a group chosen by the S.E.C., and foreign companies that do not use international standards must reconcile their statements with the American rules before their securities can trade in American markets.” 2. Overstating a country wealth is one of the potentially negative risk associated with investing in a foreign country. A country could be worth 20 billion dollars according to their standards however, when invested in, it is only worth 10million American dollars. Such as when you are an internal user at a firm, you can easily access all correct financial data that is made available to investors and executives. External parties have to rely on information given to them by the company which could be falsified in regards to their financial statements. 3. The United States would cause revisions to the IASB accounting standards because they have general accepted...

...mechanisms of a clock which has plenty of unique working parts that, when put together, will tell the time. As such, the roles and functions of police organizations will be identified along with their role as it applies to the law. There are various types of police agencies ranging from the local to federal level which will also be described. Finally, the specific role and function of patrol work will be explained. Roles and Functions of Police Organizations Roles and functions begin within an organizational chart that assigns tasks and authority for achieving goals. There are two basic classifications of police functions which are either operational or administrative (Grant and Terry, 2012). One role in a police department is in administrative services. The units that provide these services are sometimes referred to as support units. Their functions are usually in hiring and training of police officers, record keeping, planning and research as well as internal affairs. These units are co-staffed by sworn officers and civilian employees. Operational units or line personnel are in direct assistance to the community. They patrol on foot for community building and in vehicles to patrol traffic. These are the men and women in uniform that the public identifies as law enforcement officers who are sworn into office. In addition to administrative and operational units, there are special functions or units within a police force. Several examples are S.W.A.T., K9 and covert...

...Analysis of Amending Gun Laws in America Written By: Merri C. Eder Intro to American Government Instructor: Curtis Ankeny April 26, 2013 Analysis of Amending Gun Laws in America Amending gun laws, more specifically background checks and gun registration laws, is perhaps one of the most widespread debates currently occurring in America. The United States experiences tragic levels of gun violence, claiming over 30,000 lives annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention( CDC, 2013). For every one person who dies from a gunshot wound, two others are wounded. Every year, approximately 100,000 people are victims of gun violence in America( CDC, 2013). In addition to those who are killed or injured, there are countless others whose lives are forever changed by the deaths of and injuries to their loved ones. Gun violence touches every branch of our society in which we live. Gun violence increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the chances of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and also among those who attempt suicide, places children and young people at risk, and disproportionately affects communities of color. Mass shooting tragedies like the school shootings at Sandy Hook, at Virginia Tech in April 2007 and Northern Illinois University in February 2008 – or the 1993 office shooting in San Francisco that led to the formation of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence – receive strong...

...Natural Disaster Situation Kimberly Bennett DeVry University: Intro to Business and Tech 60715 The essay will be discussing why the socialist system is the best economic system to respond in the event of a natural disaster. Natural disasters with epic proportions such as hurricane, flood, blizzard, forest fire, etc. it will explain how it is the best system to assist with individuals after the disaster and how to deal with the aftermath of the crisis. Finally it will explain how the laws of supply and demand increase the cost to heat our homes and businesses in the winter. Socialism is an economic system that is better described as social ownership. It is based on organizational use, which mean the good and services produce are used to directly “satisfy” the economic demand. This is what makes it a good system for the public, they directly deal with goods and services that humans consume and use. An economic system in which the production and distribution of goods are controlled substantially by the government rather than by private enterprise, and in which cooperation rather than competition guides economic activity. (Harper, 2010). There are a numerous amounts of socialism some tolerate capitalism as long as they follow the same guidelines. All communists are socials but not necessarily all socialists are communists. The capitalist party that runs the United States can’t even deal with two feet of snow in New York City. Billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg was...

...The death penalty in the United States and around the World Raul Lopez-Rodriguez Liberty University Online CJUS 230 Professor: Jeffrey Sexton July 31, 2013 Abstract This document explore the advance and disadvantages of the death penalty in the United States. The death penalty has been used by many countries including Europe in the early years of society. In addition, during the years, death penalty has been an option to suppress those who are not so privilege in society. The death penalty crime in those areas, where the Capital punishment is permitted those states are in a higher crime rate. The American Civil Liberties Union has been one of the most important organization in the world in support of many human rights and are against the death penalty. Since, the American Civil Liberties Union gives us; some of the reasons that helps to understand why this punishment does not help to minimize crimes in our society. Although, many lawyers are use or put on the cases to help those in need to be free, there has been many of those lawyers who if they are not paid a good amount of money they will not work hard enough to get them what they deserve which is their liberty. Christianity has not been in support of the death penalty at all and it has been working against the destruction of human beings using the bible as their back up and the Holy Ghost who change people hearts. The death penalty is against the rights of defendant and cannot be...

...Understanding the Teachings of Islam Devry University Abstract Even though Islam is the third largest religion practiced in the U.S., many see Islam through a distorted view that focuses on terrorists and extremists. Even though this religion teaches peace and love, because of highly publicized Islamic fundamentalists who have abused and defamed the name of Islam there are stereotypes and distrust geared towards the group. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief insight into the teachings of Islam and how those teaching promote love and peace, not war and bloodshed, in spite of the misconceptions. Understanding the Teachings of Islam Right now, Islam is a highly controversial and sensitive issue in today’s world and there are many misconceptions about its beliefs, values, and goals. The condition of Islam right now is in chaos because of the acts of terrorists and extremists. There needs to be an understanding that the religion of Islam does not portray violence and hate that most see in the media today. The religion of Islam is not very different from other highly practiced religions in the world. Many see Islam through a fallacious view that focuses on terrorists and extremists. Even though this religion teaches mercy and compassion, it has been abused by these people to change focus of the true meaning. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief insight into the teachings of Islam and how this religion is not about the violence and hate. By discussing its...

...Ebony Williams EDU-210 January 18, 2015 Thomas Christner Movers and Shakers in Education What is Education? Why is it so important to our world? When thinking about how far we have come in education reform, it is also important to reflect on how it all started. Education is a form of learning that usually takes place in a school institution where one who is experienced and has obtained a degree in Education teaches to his/ her students. Education develops one’s intellect, knowledge, and beliefs in which prepares us for the real world upon our completion of high school. Under any circumstance where one’s thoughts and feelings are consumed, that could be considered an educational and learning experience as well. Education has evolved so much over time, and is providing our kids with the tools to help them to be successful individuals. The concept of Education goes back farther than most of us could ever imagine. School has been formatted into four stages which is Elementary, Middle School, High School, and College. In this paper, I will discuss the four people and events that had a great affect on the evolution of American education. Born in 470 BC in Athens, Greece, Socrates was a Greek philosopher who had a great influence on ancient and modern philosophy. Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve practical results for the greater well being of society. Little was known about his life in which what was, was told through the dialogue between his students...

...The Transatlantic Slave Trade The Atlantic slave trade or transatlantic slave trade took place across the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th through to the 19th centuries. The vast majority of slaves transported to the New World were Africans from the central and western parts of the continent, sold by Africans to European slave traders who then transported them to North and South America. The numbers were so great that Africans who came by way of the slave trade became the most numerous Old World immigrants in both North and South America before the late eighteenth century. The South Atlantic economic system centered on making goods and clothing to sell in Europe and increasing the numbers of African slaves brought to the New World. This was crucial to those European countries which, in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, were vying with each other to create overseas empires. The evolution of slavery is crucial to understanding the importance of currently standing issues. Slavery began in 1440 when Portugal started to trade slaves with West Africa. The first Africans imported to the English colonies were also called “indentured servants” or “apprentices for life”. By the middle of the sixteenth century, they and their offspring were legally the property of their owners. As property, they were merchandise or units of labor, and were sold at markets with other goods and services. By the 17th century, Western Europeans developed an organized system of trading slaves...

... HCS/435 Victor Gibb By: David Moeller, April Shaffer, Josephine Johnson, Rachelle Jacquay, Angie Wellman, Margaret Werzinsky Intro Supp Side The topic of euthanasia has been of much debate for many years. Throughout the outline varying sides have been focused on in regards to this topic. On one side there are supporters of euthanasia that believe that each individual has the right to make their own choices when dealing with the quality of life they want to be subjected too. Many are in favor because euthanasia can help decrease the suffering that terminally ill patients have to endure. Then there are those that oppose this line of thinking, “These people are convinced that no individual has the right to determine the end of his life” (Geiger, 2010). When discussing the topic of euthanasia this has been deemed an ethical issue because it deals with moral principles, which is different for each individual. Opp Side Supp Side Euthanasia is a topic that brings about much debate, but when it comes to an individual’s life they should have a legal right to choose what is best for them. Many in opposition of euthanasia go along with the view that it is wrong for a person to end their life and that it is right to have laws that prohibit such actions. But the question that arises is if this legal course gives a person the right that was granted to them in the Declaration of Independence, each...

...Economic Systems, Socialism, and Supply & Demand Patrick Domench Intro to Business and Technology Professor Armes DeVry University September 7, 2014 The best system to handle a disaster of epic proportions is Capitalism. We live in a Capitalist system now and we have been through many natural disasters that have rocked our communities and we have always pulled together and gotten through everyone so far. We have even been attacked in New York, one of the largest cities in the USA, and we were able to rebuild. In the free market system the private sector owns most of the resources, this leaves the main function of the government to facilitate and aid economic activity. This is particularly strong in a disaster type situation because the infrastructure of the economy would be disturbed, so in this case the government would be focused on rebuilding and encouraging investment in the private sector. The private sectors main concern is profit and this greatly aids regeneration. A Socialist system would not be best in an emergency situation and I refuse to speculate that it would be. Firstly, the question itself is academically dishonest. It presumes an answer to a postulation or theory, then demands the student to support the results of that theory with "proof". It's like a rhetorical question, but sinister in its intellectual pre-suppositions. Like asking "Everyone knows that Crisco is better than butter in making croissants, now you prove it"! Secondly, it is quite...

...Intro There are certain people in this world that can be very influential based on their actions. When it comes to breaking the color barriers, many people think of big names like Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr.. Most do not think of those who were influential on the sports side of smashing the racial barriers. Branch Rickey was the most influential person, in baseball, to break down these barriers, who many will over look. If it were not for people like Branch Rickey, we may have never known the names of people like Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente. It is crazy to think how different baseball could have been if these players never were given the opportunity to play the game, and it is mostly all thanks to Branch Rickey. History...

Describe three types of illegal business behavior alleged against Mr. Madoff and for each type of behavior, explain how the behavior is illegal or unethical in the conduct of business. Madoff reportedly admitted to investigators that he had lost $50 billion of his investors' money, and pled guilty to 11 felony counts—securities fraud, investment adviser fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, false statements, perjury, false filings with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and theft from an employee benefit plan—on March 12, 2009.
