...Invitation to Sociology Peter Ludwig Berger was born March 17, 1929 in Vienna. Shortly after WW2 he emigrated to the United Sates. He first got a degree in Arts at Wagner College in 1949 before he continued his studies at the New School for Social Research in New York. In 1950 he got his masters and in 1952 he received his Ph.D. After finishing his education he went back to school, but to work and teach other students. First he started at Evangelische Academic in Bad Boll, Germany. Then from 1956 to 1958 Berger became the assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. He has also taught at Rutgers, The New School, and Boston College. In the end he settled down at Boston University and has been working there since 1985 (Biographybase). In 1963 he published a book called Invitation to Sociology. He starts the book by giving an introduction to what he is going to talk about and that is sociology. Berger gives a great example about of people traveling may experience culture shock minus the geographical displacement (Wadsworth 7). This statements refers that people that study sociology don’t need to travel to far distant lands to experience a whole new society. By digging deeper into their own society and studying people and the cultures they will be surprised over everything they discover. I really enjoyed his example about love and who marry who on page 9. Berger uses the example of the institution of marriage. Instead of just looking at the surface, he digs deeper revealing...

...identity of a corporation” (Berger, page 49-50). Apple has achieved just that, by using an apple as their logo. However, the use of an apple can go so much deeper than just a logo-it is an indexical sign, causing consumers to feel loyalty, trust, and an association with knowledge. I first remember seeing the logo of an apple in grade school on old computers manufactured by Macintosh, the same corporation that is known today as “Apple”. For centuries, apples have been associated with knowledge. For example, Isaac Newton used an apple in his famous experiment, students often gift their favorite teachers apples, and “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” anecdote to follow for a healthy life. It is only fitting that a company would capitalize on this infamous fruit and associate it with technology-especially a company that is as cutting-edge as Apple. In this way, the apple is an indexical sign which logically connects it to what it represents-knowledge (Berger, page 49). The logo itself uses very simple graphics and design elements-basically the logo is just an apple with space between the actual fruit and the stem. The open, blank, or “white”, space between the fruit and the stem represents wealth, and in this case a wealth of knowledge (Berger, page 77). By using just one color for the apple (white or black depending on the background) with no shadow, Apple has strong lighting which causes the observer to feel knowledgeable and rational (Berger, page 81). The last element...

...Berger believes there are three ways to escaping the tyranny of society, which is transformation, detachment, and manipulation. One way of escaping from the tyranny of society is Transformation. With the connections of new definitions of reality derives the process of social change. With the redefinition, any individual may begin to act obstructive to the expectations that were bound for him with the old definition. Berger states, “Social situations can be transformed or at least sabotaged by a refusal to accept their previous definitions.” We can quickly destroy and transform social situations when one refuses to accept the conception of society. Then Some may find themselves unable to manage when others act in ways that are not expected. Stephan Potter “calls the “ploy” is a precise technique of redefining the situation contrary to general expectations.” In order for one to attempt transformation, One must refuse the external social controls and adapt to the internal social controls. Berger goes on to talk about how in the many examples he had pointed out. One can find the introduction of a character that does not fit into the scenario of a certain play, which can threaten the role playing of the ones who do fit. These kinds of experiments may lead to a reversal in an individual’s view of society. The second way of escaping the tyranny of society is detachment. Which is the method of resistance to social controls. Berger states. “It is possible, though frequently at considerable...

...Introduction The goal of the life span perspective of development is to understand how and why all different kinds of people, everywhere, and of every age, change over time (Berger, 2011). Developmental psychologists study the constant changes we experience throughout life, including physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Psychologists also study how we are affected by, react to, and process the world around us (Stone, 2011). The first aspect of developmental science is to understand how and why people change. Another aspect of developmental science is to identify universal similarities and differences among people, and then use that information to unify humanity as well as distinguish us as individuals (Berger, 2011). The most important aspect of developmental science is to understand that people change over time. According to Berger (2001), “Change is systematic, ongoing, and dynamic throughout the entire life span.” Explain the life span perspective of development. According to Paul and Margret Baltes, life-span perspective views human development as multidirectional, multicontextual, multicultural, multidisciplinary, and plastic. Development is considered multidirectional because change occurs in all directions, in every part of life. Human characteristics can increase, decrease, or remain the same (Berger, 2011). Development is also multicontextual. It can occur in many different physical and social environments. We develop, regardless of where we are...

...with Criminal Intent? Edward W. Hargrave Forum 3 Case Study Liberty University PSYC 210 Can a Child Commit a Crime with Criminal Intent? Criminal intent by definition means, the intent to do something wrong or forbidden by law…intent refers to the state of mind accompanying an act…it is the outline of the mental pattern which is necessary to do the crime” (Criminal Intent). The question in this situation is whether it is or it is not possible for a child to commit a crime with criminal intent. I believe the answer to this particular question can be found in the argumentation within several of the factors that we have studied thus far in this course. These factors mentioned being biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial growth. Introduction This particular little boy is considered to be in the stage of the ‘play years’, which is when children are between the ages of 2 and 6 years. As a 6-year-old child, his brain has not fully developed. The process of lateralization, which is when both the right and the left sides of the brain are being connected, has not yet been completed. The right hemisphere of the brain is engaged in reasoning, analyzing, and logical thinking and the left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for emotions, constant, and communication. According to the PowerPoint presentation, a child within this stage has insufficient muscle control along with lacking patience and the judgment in certain situations. In this particular case, injury control/harm reduction...

Berger Paints is a well-established name in the paint industry of Bangladesh. The company has gained quite a good name in the paint market and has been running strong through all these years after it was first established. ... The introduction of middle childhood and adolescence, a crucial period of development, for the child and parent can become a time of uncertainty. The parenting styles of the parent makes a difference in the out-come of the child. All children need parents that care about them. The different parenting styles include; authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. In the best interest of the child’s development, parents have to make an evaluation of the parenting methods that work well with the personality of the child. During these years the child’s temperament also begins to have an effect in their lives. “A child’s temperament matters (Kagan & Fox, 2006). If they do not consider the personality of the child, authoritarian parents might terrorize children who are innately fearful or anxious, or permissive parents might watch their impulsive children flail out of control.”(Berger, 2010). Environmental circumstances also have a role in children’s development for example: a parent gaining or loosing employment. There will be many changes that take place for middle childhood and adolescent children. Middle Childhood For many people puberty is a time in their life that will not be forgotten. The ages from 7 to 11 are sometimes called the school years. “The average 7- to 11-year-old gains about 2 inches (5 centimeters) and 5 pounds (about 2.2 kilometers) per year.”(Berger, 2010). Those healthy and productive years allow measured...

...Visual Communication and Approaches Deondra Richardson CGD218: Visual Literacy in Business (BNC1111A) Mr. Tony Sgarlatti April 11, 2011 Visual Communication and Approaches “Visual communication is a central aspect of our lives, and much of this communication is done indirectly, through symbolic means: by words, signs, and symbols of all kinds” (Berger, 2008a, p.2). Utilizing communication is an important part of advertising or expressing ideas without actually saying them. I recently finished a visual project in which I was required to reflect on the effectiveness of visual communication using at least three different approaches to convey my message. The different approaches I used in my visual project to demonstrate the effectiveness of visual communication are as follows: images, typography, color, signs, and symbols. In this paper, I will explain why each approach will pose as an effective tool in communicating my message. In conclusion, I will also explain why I feel signs and symbols is the most effective approach in my visual project of effective visual communication. As the old saying goes, “a picture says a thousand words?” In my opinion, this phrase exemplifies the power of images. I believe this saying is true because images can be used to persuade and to perpetuate ideas that words alone cannot (Lester, 2006). We see images every day, and they often contain more information than we imagine. The world has become flooded with images: some selling...

...Infancy and Early Childhood Development Paper By: Pamela Smith March 8, 2014 PSY 375 Life Span Human Development Introduction While researching this topic I found it to be interesting that there is a controversy about this topic. When Judith Rich Harris published her book in 1998 "The Nurture Assumption" which in the book Harris revels that parents have little to no influence over the long-term development of their child's development. Therefore, developmental psychologist have found themselves on the defense about this topic. Harris believed that the child developed more by the people around them and the surrounding around them outside the home. Her ideas went widespread and gained media attention and therefore the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation sponsored a conference on parentingr." The fruit of this conference is a book, "Parenting and the Child's World: Influences on Academic, Intellectual and Socio emotional Development," to be published next year by Erlbaum. Chapters by Harris and behavioral geneticist David Rowe, PhD, present data to support Harris's view, while a cadre of developmental psychologists detail decades of research that they feel demonstrates the role parents play in influencing children's development" (Azar, pg. 62). Parents do matter, from the way they parent, to the foods they let the children eat, academics, socially, and personality development in a child. ...

...very low in interpersonal and social intelligence. In this paper we will review two theories of intelligence. The first one is Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory and the second one is Robert Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence. We will also consider with the reader aspects of intelligence testing with a broader perspective. Howard Gardner believes that there are at least eight basic intelligences. They are: “linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, naturalistic, social-understanding, and selv-understanding” (Berger, 2005, p. 528). Even though everyone may have a minimal level of intelligence on each one we tend to be more skilled in some. Depending on the experiences, upbringing, cultural environment, family, and community the person develops more in one type of intelligence than others. “Asians may emphasize interpersonal intelligence” (Berger, 2005, p. 528). When looking at testing psychometricians that testing verbal and logical skills have utilized the North American prototype as the basis, which does not make it valid for other cultures. Neuropsychologically speaking the different intelligences are networks created in the brain where that particular stimuli operates like a module. “Each module has its own...
