Research has not shown just one factor or cause of EBD but there are many factors that are casual risk factors that seem to go on. These risk factors can be external or internal. The external factors are school, family, culture. The internal would be biological. These risk factors effect children differently because of their developmental stage. All of these factors whether it is external or internal increase the risk of emotional and behavioral problems. If a child is exposed to many of these factors then this is when the EBD behaviors will show it’s self whether in school, biologically, or family. Many students with EBD display learning and behavioral problems that make teaching them effectively in instruction difficult (Kauffman, 2005). When a student is in a class where the instruction is not being effectively instructed, an EBD student will tend to make much less academically then their peers. Reading and writing are closely related, mutually supportive linguistic activities. Therefore, developing beginning reading skills through writing activities is an effective approach. Writing requires careful scrutiny of the sound and sequence in order to write words correctly and it is this cognitive process that enables the child to become proficient in the phonetic analysis skills that are the foundation of the reading process. This guide will include principles of effective instruction and some teaching strategies used to address the needs of students with EBD. At times it will refer to principles governing behavior that impact the outcomes of instruction. It will include some instructional lessons for teaching primary reading and writing, the steps to achieve the objectives and assessment procedures to insure the efficacy of interventions. I believe that we are quick to believe that if we give these children medication that it will automatically dismiss these types of behaviors. I honestly think that this is where we are wrong. In my opinion I do not believe that all children need to be on medication due to being diagnosed to EBD and ADHD. For most children I think that it will be something that will fade out the older that they get. I do not think that just because a doctor says a child is ADHD or has EBD that they need to be medicated. I have been able to see children that were taking ADHD medicines and how their persona changed. They become quiet, depressed, or just seem to be zoned out for the most part. This is not what a young child needs to experience. With these types of children I believe their treatments should start at home. Most kids develop these types of problems due to parents not being home, or not receiving enough attention at home. Possible alternative plans could be talking more with the child and getting their feelings on the situation. Possibly talking to a family counselor could also help. Teachers could also play a big part in their student’s life by taking some one on one time with the students that have ADHD and EBD. It’s the manner in which students are referred to and then placed in special education. In the past 30 years special education has grown in numbers. According to NPR.org one in seven students, is classified as having a disability. That’s 63% more than when special education programs officially began in 1976. The concern is, what happened in those 3 decades to allow a generation of children to decline mentally and intellectually. There are 13 categories of special education under IDEA: autism, deaf-blindness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment,otherhealth impairment, specific learning disability, traumatic brain injury, speech language impairment and visual impairment including blindness (nichy.org). B is a 6 year old child with a diagnosis of ASD [Autism] he also has EBD [emotional and behavioural difficulties] with Attachment issues. B is now in Year 2 . B is academically able but exhibiting severe behavioural difficulties and displaying severe aggression toward both peers and adults with obsessive demand avoidance behaviour and impulsivity. These behaviours severely inhibit both his learning and social interaction. B is an only child . The time scale is over a nine month period, June 2010 to February 2011. B was chosen as he was not only requiring two to one support and isolation from the group to uphold the safety of his peers and of staff but was also attending for a reduced timetable of mornings only. Evidently work was required in order to go some way to improve the situation. The impact of the interventions and strategies on the child will form the main thrust of the case study.
