...A Modest Proposal by Jonathon Swift In the essay A Modest Proposal, Swift’s promoter, David Berkowitz, proposes what he thinks is the right solution to the problems being faced by the public of an eighteenth century Ireland. In this particularly long essay, Berkowitz promotes the idea of selling and consuming children. The promoter proposes the immoral ideas in an unsubstantiated fashion which results in this essay being an unsuccessful research essay. In A Modest Proposal, there are three key elements in this piece of writing that render Berkowitz’s argument baseless: the seriousness of the tone of the promoter, the proposal itself, and the use of unreliable sources used throughout the essay. A Modest Proposal begins with the writer describing the underprivileged state of the country of Ireland. Berkowitz starts to build on and take advantage of the relationship of a writer and his audience. He develops sympathy with the masses of Ireland forcing the reader to begin to sympathize and consider how big the problem is. He says that “this prodigious number of children in the arms, …, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom, a very great additional grievance.”(Swift 2). He implies that having such a great number of starving children is a huge problem being faced by the country. He explains that the mothers of these children are driven to beg for any kind of support they can get for their infants when he says “are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance...

...English 103 10 July 2014 An Improper Proposal “A Modest Proposal”, written by Johnathon Swift, is perhaps one of the greatest literary works in English history. It is an intelligently written satire that is set in 1729. In it Swift presents the idea of devouring one year old infants in an attempt to feed the hungry and ever growing population. The satire is set in Ireland and was aimed at Catholics, who were known for having a lot of kids and being too poor to care for them. Throughout his persuasive/argumentative satire he utilizes logic and reason, emotion, and character to argue why his proposal is a good solution to the excess population and to persuade others to follow his idea. One of the types of arguments Swift employs throughout his essay is logos. Logos are arguments that are based on fact and reason. In the beginning of his literary work Swift begins discussing how many children are born every year to poverty stricken parents. He uses specific numbers such as “. . . . One-hundred and twenty thousand children of the poor are born annually” to bring to light how much the population and hunger problems will continue to grow. Swift is using logos (logic and reason) when he uses statistics of children born to parents who cannot afford to care for them. He also uses logos to dehumanize the infants by comparing them to food already eaten. When Swift compares the children to roasting pigs he is using an analogy. Another logical analogy Swift uses is comparing...

The question that he answers in this essay is: What are your short-term and long-term career aspirations? How will an MBA education further your development? Why does the academic experience offered at the Stanford GSB appeal to you? (Unlimited length) I work at the Information Technology industry since 1993, when I was recruited to the classified electronic surveillance unit of Israel Defense Force (IDF). Since I've advanced to management positions in a very early stage of my professional career (at the age of 19 I've already finished the IDF Technical Officers course and was positioned as a Team Leader commanding 8-10 network professionals and computer technicians), it was a natural step to continue my career on management positions in the industry after my release from the active duty at 1997. I started my civilian career as an Information Systems Manager at Mobile Solutions Ltd., a dynamic Ireland-based start-up company developing various hardware devices for mobile satellite antenna’s technology. During my military service I've come to realization that in order to...

...Nichole Oliver Professor Scott ENG-ENF 3/III April 23, 2016 We Should Abolish Columbus Day Only two federal holidays in the United States bear the name of two specific men, ironically one of them fought racism -- Martin Luther King Jr., and the other was a genocidal racist – Chistopher Columbus. Opposition to Columbus Day (observed on the second Monday of October) has intensified in recent decades, while the former passes each year with relatively little controversy. The issue of if we should still celebrate Columbus Day is widely discussed. The topic remains important because it concerns fundamental moral and economic questions related to the origin of how Christopher Columbus got his recognition. In my essay I will touch on the ongoing debate of if we should erase Columbus Day as one of our federal holidays. As our young minds are still developing and processing information of our history, which hopefully holds an importance to the American citizens of this great nation, there is a poem taught to children about our history. How does the saying go? Ah, yes! In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue… We are taught that Columbus is viewed a valiant adventurer that opened up the worlds eyes by discovering the Americas; on the contrary, he is perceived a symbol of slavery and genocide. His trip to America is often claimed as a voyage of bravery in his attempts to discover new lands and did however lead to the permanent colonization, settlement, political...

...THE UNIVESITY OF ZAMBIA SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT STUDIES NAME : KALUBA PHIRI QUESTION: ENTREPRENEURS ARE BORN. DISCUSS The main objective of this essay is to discuss whether entrepreneurs are born or made. It will start by giving an elaborate definition of an entrepreneur and also highlight the characteristics which they possess. It will thereafter discuss with valid points raised on both angles of whether entrepreneurs are born or made. It will therefore justify with persuasive evidence that entrepreneurs are made. Finally a conclusion will be drawn. The entrepreneur character is one of the characters which strongly influence business around the world. This explains the need to understand the profile of such a character. An entrepreneur is a person who creates a new business, taking risks in achieving the objectives which they propose, to make profits and growth by identifying some important opportunities. An entrepreneur manages important resources, which he or she draws from different sources on a major power to persuade those who hold them. Many experts have sought to understand and describe the personality of the entrepreneur, because, although many people have good ideas to start a business, some turn these ideas into concrete businesses (Shapiro 1975). Burdus (3, 2007) An entrepreneur is said to be "a person with...

Carry out a STEP analysis on the extract about Mannesmann. (10 points) It was clear to many observers that by hiving off its attractive telecoms activities into a separate company Mannesmann risked becoming vulnerable to an unwelcome take-over. Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, however, demanded that Germany treat a British attempt to take over one of its firms with the same fairness extended to Germans buying up business in Britain. He rebuked Gerhard Schroeder for fighting the take-over, making it clear that in the new global economy he should not try to block it. ...seems as though the answer is simple, that he was a terrible king. And yet, historians argue many sides, some even favoring Charles. In fact, the reason behind Charles’ beheading is still kind of unclear. Of course he made mistakes, but then so does every monarch. Yet, Charles was the first king to be legally tried and executed. And in the 17th century, when the King was seen as God’s lieutenant on earth, executing one was unimaginable. This essay will explain why the regicides executed Charles. But first, it’s important to know a bit about Charles. Charles is known to be rigid and insensitive1 and the reason for this is partly because of his extreme belief in the Divine right of kings. He thought that God would always protect him. This can even be proven because of his inflexibility during the civil war, even while he was losing. “No matter how generous the terms or desperate his condition, the king refused to yield.”2 Charles’ personality and thinking caused more problems than they solved, and this will be proven in this essay. For now, it is important to know that the regicides believed it was necessary to kill Charles I because of his tyrannical rule, which can easily be proven by looking at his Personal Rule. The infamous personal rule is a great example of Charles’ tyranny and absolute monarchy. King Charles I was seen by many in his time as being a tyrant. Parliament accused him of being an absolute monarch because he rarely ever agreed with Parliament. He...

...propaganda in wartime? The objective is obviously the same – to get the general populace to accept what the propaganda states and take appropriate action i.e. buy goods, vote for a party or support the war effort. Advertising and political propaganda continue to take place during the periods of War propaganda although the reverse is not generally true (or is reduced to recruitment advertising and maintaining armed deterrents). The method of delivery of the propaganda, in whichever age you choose, is also similar but varies with technology – speeches, signage, word of mouth, leaflets, posters, radio messages, TV advertisements/broadcasts, Internet messages/presentations/advertisements and even educational establishments (teaching). This essay will mainly (and briefly) address the last two plus centuries since the term propaganda was established (with a...

...MAJOR BARBARA by George Bernard Shaw THE AUTHOR George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was born into a lower-middle class Protestant family in Dublin, Ireland. His father was an alcoholic failed merchant, while his mother was a professional singer. When Shaw was sixteen, his mother ran off with her voice teacher, leaving him at home to complete school, which he despised. In 1876, he joined his mother in London and took up a career in journalism and writing, beginning with a string of five unsuccessful novels. Meanwhile, he became interested in political causes, especially socialism. This led him to become one of the founders of the Fabian Society, which had as its stated goal to transform Britain into a socialist society by means of education and legislation, while scorning the revolutionary violence of some of the Continental socialists. His first success as a writer came through his works of art, music, and dramatic criticism. It was not until 1891 that he wrote his first play, but once he started, he rarely stopped until his death at the age of 94, eventually producing a total of sixty plays. During his first twelve years as a playwright, he wrote a number of plays that are now highly esteemed (Arms and the Man, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Candida), but found that London theaters were unwilling to stage them. But in 1904, the Court Theater in Chelsea came under new management, and Shaw’s plays found a home among people interested in experimental drama. Here, he was able to direct his...
