On July 5, 1984, the Irving Independent School District v. Tatro was brought to the U.S. Supreme Court. Amber Tatro was an eight year old girl who was born with a birth defect known as Spina Bifida. Amber suffers from orthopedic and speech impairments and a neurogenic bladder, which prevents her from emptying her bladder voluntarily. She must be catheterized every three hours or so, in order to avoid injuring her kidneys.
