...prepared by me specifically for this course. Student's Signature: _______________Rui Xie_______________ ***************************************************************** Instructor's Grade on Assignment: Instructor's Comments: Reflection Paper I am in the Group 4, they all very kind and gave me a great many of help. This is the second time we get together to do the case. And I found that it is easier than the last time. We just meet after class and allocated the work as last time, it is easier for each person to do the same part what they did before and know how to improve it. We know each other by the first teamwork and this time we don’t need waste time on build a communication line, know each other, or rebuild the trust. It makes the teamwork more effective. What I learn from this group work is that a team needs some time when individuals challenge themselves and re-evaluate their skills. Team members need to learn how to work well with others and to understand that a person is unique; a person has knowledge and energy that can be channeled in a positive way. We do our own work very well, nobody late or forget to do something and we do almost same weight of work in our team. Also, we have some conflict on...

...Tuckman’s Model of Group Development Forming: in which the group is just coming together. It is often characterized by shyness, uncertainty and diffidence among the members, although extravert members may rapidly assume some kind of leadership. Maintenance concerns predominate Storming: in which, having been established, there is a period of jockeying for position, authority and influence among the members. In classes, this is the period of "testing-out" the teacher. Disagreements appear or are manufactured and roles are eventually allocated. The initial leaders may not survive this period: it is the most uncomfortable phase of the group's life—a sort of group adolescence. Norming: having sorted out its internal structure, there is then the issue of what the group stands for. What kind of behavior and contribution is acceptable and what isn't? Members explore behind the power processes of storming and begin to form some idea of the group's identity: the "group in the mind". This is rarely done explicitly, of course, and it can readily slip back into Storming, Performing: after all that, the group can begin to get some work done, on the basis of a relatively stable structure. Adjourning: This is about completion and disengagement, both from the tasks and the group members. Individuals will be proud of having achieved much and glad to have been part of such an enjoyable group. They need to recognize what they've done, and consciously move on. Some describe...

...reflecting on the effectiveness of working in short term groups who have been brought together in a study environment. My group was formed to work on a presentation where the topic was the way different types of teams communicate. My group consisted of five people: Brendon, Dominic, Bridgette, Kelly and myself. I have worked with everyone in this group before, however not as a group, and was confident that we would make a good team. I have a very dominant personality and tend to take the leadership role in these situations and so I took the lead (Thoms, Moore & Scott 1996), however it was also a collaboration, everyone gave their ideas and all ideas were discussed. I will be exploring the advantages and disadvantages of group work within the University setting based on my own group experiences. According to (Hodgkinson-Williams, Slay & Siebörger, 2008 and Lave & Wenger, 1991) the use of group work is an increasingly recognised way for students to problem solve and develop transferable skills which are necessary for the workplace. Group work can also help with expanding the student’s emotional intelligence (Landau & Meirovich, 2011). Emotional intelligence is a quality that employers are now looking for more and more in their employees, even to the point where learning about emotional intelligence is part of management training and development. ADVANTAGES It is believed that the greatest focus of groups, especially those that have been brought together...

...arise for group interaction. Groups are in many ways are an unavoidable part of human life. There are different types of groups that one interacts with throughout his or her life. One of the group types would be “Small Groups”. While it is arguable, many people agree that anywhere from 12 to 13 people may be the maximum size for a small group with a minimum size of three people. The most intersting part of a small group is that there are two types of small groups. The two types of small groups are “Primary” and “Secondary” groups. This article will define the two types of small groups listed above and relate my personal relationship with the two small group types listed in the above sentence. The Primary small group type is “a group whose main purpose is to give people a way to fulfill their basic need to associate with others”. It is common knowledge that the majority of humans require social interaction in order to maintain mental stability. Two primary groups that I am apart of would be my family and friends. Within these two primary groups, I am able to fulfill my basic need of to associate with others. With my family and friends, I am able to find a level of personal trust and communication that would be difficult to relate with any other social group. My role in the family is father and husband and I provide the majority of the finances for my family. The role I play in my friendships is one of mutual respect and understanding. The secondary small group is “a group that exists...

...Today website. It was written by Bart Jansen. The article was published on Thursday November 5, 2015. This article “House Passes 6-Year Bill Funded For 3 Years”, by Bart Jansen, was about The House of Representatives approving a highway bill.0 The legislation provides state and local government a federal commitment. It also sets the rules for planning and building highways, bridges, and transit programs for the next six years. Representatives think that the bill is critical to America and the economy. The highway bill is important and an overdue step forward to ending the cycle of stop-gas renewals. Also to building our future again. “Transportation has a direct impact on our day to day quality of life. It has an affect on how we get to work, how we get our kids home from school, and how much time we can spend with our families and friends instead of sitting in traffic. Transportation allows our country and our businesses be competitive,” Bill Shuster said after the bill was approved. The three terms I want to connect to my article are House of Representatives, page 252, Senate, page 253, and bill, page 253. In the article I found the term House of Representatives, the term applies because its the larger part of the two bodies of the Congress, who had to approve the bill. The term Senate applies because it's also a body of Congress which had to approve of a similar, earlier bill. The term bill applies because it was the law that stated as a proposal for the highway. House of...

...Source: The Place of Men in changing family cultures. Geoff Dench (1996). The following extract comes from a 1950's home economics textbook: • Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal - on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed. • Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift. • Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up school books, toys, paper, etc. then run a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift, too. • Prepare the children: Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. • Minimize all noise: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of washer, dryer, dishwasher or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be...

...Group work can be a very fun and enjoyable experience however, if you choose the wrong group members to work with, it can be a terrible experience. As a business student at SAIT, a lot of our projects are group based. I’ve experienced both success and failure working in groups. Choosing the right group members is key to doing well. When I first attended SAIT I would choose people who were my friends regardless of their work ethic. This ended up coming back to bite me as our group did poorly as a result of my group members lack of work ethic. It can be hard choosing the “right” group members, as you typically do not know how people work until you start working on the project. Through trial and error I have found a method to ensure success within the group. The first and most important step is to communicate effectively with group members. Gather every one’s e-mail and phone number so that every will be on the same page. The second step is to create a team charter. The charter will entail expectations and rules that the group will create and agree on. The third is to have weekly meetings with group members. This will allow everyone to stay accountable for their part because their will be weekly check-ins. The fourth and final step is to proof read each other’s work. When you put everyone’s work together and do not bother to take the time to look at what others have written, you run the risk of having multiple errors within the project. Provided you follow these steps, you will...

...Autonomous Work Groups The dynamics of a workforce is ever changing with management, diversity, and the collaboration between management and employees. With all the changes it is important that employees and management, as well, remain motivated. Therefore there must be a workflow design that works well for both management and employees. It must create an alliance, collaboration, a line of trust, decision making, and create a sense of empowerment. Autonomous work groups offer this and so much more. There are pros and cons about autonomous work groups and why they work and do not work, but it is a work design that many companies are beginning to consider based upon research. The Effectiveness of Autonomous Work Groups Autonomous work groups, also known as self-managing work teams, are a team of employees granted autonomy or independence over the work they do within an organization (Kokemuller, 2014). This autonomy includes independent decision-making related to a specific work function, project or job and independent freedom to assign individual members specific tasks within the group (Kokemuller, 2014). An autonomous work group (AWG) can hire, fire, and make the necessary decisions for their department. An AWG replaces the role of having a boss and usually someone is elected to stand as leader to help facilitate within the group. What makes AWG effective groups are that they are able to work together toward a common task or project goal. They typically come up with broader...

...Courtroom work group Ronald A. Tonelli University of Phoenix The Criminal Justice System CJA/204 JEROME SIMPSON JR. Courtroom work group Across The United States of America and in every State, County and City criminal justice system, a Courtroom Workgroup has a familiar understanding between the prosecutor, defense attorney, and the judge. This concept of criminal justice describes the seemingly confrontational courtroom participants as colleagues serving within the criminal justice system. Eisenstein and Jacob in 1977 studied the interactions of court members at all levels they came up with the courtroom work group. The three individuals have totally different jobs and responsibilities than the other two, they work separately from one another toward their personal goal but work together for a common goal “justice”. The biggest change I would make in the system would be to add more judges and courts on all levels of the criminal justice system to help with the overload of today's society. With more courts, we would be able to ensure quicker court dates for the accused. This change would free up a lot of money due to people not sitting in jails, and the cost per day per person is around $234.00. Think of how much we could put into programs to help prevent crime with that amount of money saved. The judge ensures all follows the laws of the court and its procedures in the courtroom. He will address all objections place before the court either overruling or sustaining...

...What are the indications that conflict may be present in a work group? What are two methods for addressing/resolving such conflicts? Justify your rationale. I would like to say that people are able to easily pick up on workplace tension when it is constantly in their mists. Per the ETU website, signs of workplace or workgroup conflict can be: • cliques or factions meeting to discuss issues separately, when they affect the whole organisation • one group being left out of organising an event which should include everybody • groups using threatening slogans or symbols to show that their group is right and the others are wrong • colleagues not speaking to each other or ignoring each other • contradicting and bad-mouthing one another • deliberately undermining or not co-operating with each other, to the downfall of the team The big question though is how to address or resolve these conflicts. Noticing or being on the receiving end of work place conflict is only one side of the situation. Taking action about it can cause further division or at times in extreme cases, causing the group to dissolve. A few suggestions for handling such issues are taken from a blog posted by Pathak. Pathak places emphasis on presenting a “super ordinate goal” to bring pack into perspective the reason the group exists to begin with. “Focusing attention on the higher goals that the groups share or the long-range aims that they have in common tends to make the current problem...

...Courtroom Work Group There are many parts of the courtroom and the process of convicting a criminal. The courtroom work group has a major role in convicting and finalizing a case. In the courtroom work group, there are three groups of people that hold the entire courtroom together. Without the work group, the courtroom would not flow, and coming to a conclusion to the case would not be as easy. The work group is made up of the Judge, the Defense Counsel and the Prosecution. They work together to reach a result, in the case by staying in contact on a daily basis. There are many roles in the work group, and if they are not all followed through with then the results could be different than what they should be. In this paper, we will look at the roles of the prosecutor, how the criminal justice funnel effects the courtroom work group and what will help eliminate the funnel and reduce the backlog of cases. The Work Group The courtroom work group is composed of various people who make the court systems work to the best of their ability. Each person has its position, and she/he is responsible for their part. We can start from the top, first we have a Judge, he/she is responsible for imposing the proper judging techniques in the courtroom, and they are to make sure the accused rights are not violated in the courtroom. Then we have a defense attorney, and the defense attorney is to defend his client against any wrongdoing by the court and prove his client is innocent of the charges...

...Intro In my perception, group work is a method of working with people in groups (two or more people) for personal growth, the enhancement of social functioning, and for the achievement of socially desirable goals. Furthermore, groups are mostly presented with a team leader or a social worker who facilitates the group to guide and accomplish one or more goals. Although my interpretation of group work are very similar from the textbook, that I was assigned for class, my family, school, church, and social experiences also played a huge part in helping me construct it. In addition, those experiences not only gave me further knowledge, but skills to help me facilitate and accomplish group work tasks. As a facilitator and as a future social worker, my idea of a successful/effective group would be a group with a positive dynamic; where each individual in the group are able to open up, share and embrace their culture, interests, stories, and backgrounds. That way the group is able to trust and support each other and respect each other based on their values and ideas. Moreover, many people benefit from group work; a few are domestic violence, sexual abuse, anger management, etc. Groups like these and countless more are very crucial in our society because it provides structure for our communities to build on, as well as, meeting the individuals own socio-economical needs and/or accomplishing a goal that is set. Not to mention, improving yours and your group’s ideas so that the task becomes...

...Personal Team and Effectiveness Assignment The Group presentation process In order to put together a group presentation based on Tuckmans stages of development and Belbins team roles, I was put into a group with two other members. We were given a scenario that we ran a small clothing shop in Middlesbrough and a new team member was going to be added. Before the groups were put together, all students were evaluated and given roles based on Belbins Team role theory. There are nine roles included in this theory, which are as follows: Plant, Resource Investigator, Co-ordinator, Shaper, Monitor evaluator, Team worker, Implementer, Complete Finisher and Specialist. All groups were put together with people who had a mixture of characteristics therefore a mixture of different roles. My roles were Co-ordinator and Team worker. Belbins analysis of our team roles helped us greatly as it gave us an idea of our individual qualities, and also the areas in which we excelled. The other team member in my groups had been given the role of Team worker and complete finisher and the other person had the roles of Plant and resource investigator. We needed to produce a PowerPoint presentation which identified Tuckmans stages of development, the model is drawn from Tuckman and Jensen (1977) article, in which the model states that the stages stand at Forming, storming norming and performing. These stages identify the needed experiences which a group need to complete a task in an effective correct...

...courtroom work group consists of the defense attorney, the state attorney, prosecutor and the judicial officer. And the purpose of this work group is to hold meetings prior to official court room trail hearings for a case, in which they assume that the defendant is guilty and negotiate and discuss potential pre trial plea bargains for the defendant. The purpose of these meetings is to save time in closing the case, because all of these procedures are done before the trial and court hearings, so that whatever is decided in the meeting can be negotiated with the defendant to see if the dispute can be settled without there being a need for a full fledged trial. But unlike most people think these work groups are not like they are depicted in the movies or in television, these work groups are actually very familiarized with each other and are not necessarily mortal enemies. Courtroom work groups actually interact with each other daily since there role in the criminal justice system is actually the same; to make sure that justice is served and that the defendants rights are not violated and/or ignored. Me personally, I wouldn't change anything in the way the courtroom work group system works right now. And this is because, to my perspective it is great that all the people involved in solving criminal cases in a specific jurisdiction have such a close relationship with each other, since it most likely help create a better flowing dynamic between all of the people that make up the work group...
