...Is College for Everyone? 8/24/2012 In my life I have heard the question asked again and again ‘is college for everyone’? No matter how many times you engage in this discussion, you will always receive several opinions (in most cases each opinion will have good points). I will discuss the difference of needing a college education and wanting a college education. I will also bring to light why I feel a college education is in fact right for everyone. You may not agree with my opinion on this matter and if that is still your stance after reading my views I can only say this: “to each his own”. When we talk about a college education we are referring to higher learning. It is my belief that everyone wants to do the very best they can in any endeavor or just in life. I do not believe there are people who want to purposely fail. It is because of this that I have the opinion that a college education is for everyone. The reason we have this debate is because a college education is optional. Why don’t we discuss whether or not a kindergarten, elementary, middle school, or high school education is for everyone? I think it is universally accepted that the education received in all the grades below college level, give us the foundation to enter society and become a productive person. If you add to this, the hunger that sits in us all to learn more, we have to believe that a college education is a must. However, before we can move forward in this discussion we must first remove the...

...High-paying jobs, huge amounts of debt, and a diploma; what do the three have in common? The answer: they can all be obtained through a college education. The idea of college has spawned many arguments since its creation, and it only becomes more prevalent as time wears on. Supporters believe it to be valuable, whether for grabbing a great job or for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, opponents say it isn’t worth its high cost or that it doesn’t always pay off in the end. While college can provide the opportunity for a better future, making it worth everything, it could also end up causing serious health problems. To begin with, college offers an opportunity for a better life. The article Education Still Pays states, “For decades, BLS data have shown that workers with more education have lower unemployment and higher earnings than workers with less education.”(p. 64) The article explains how college graduates are able to get much “higher earnings”(p.64) and are more likely to get a job. Both would allow graduates to have a stable life and fewer problems than those without a degree. The author also uses the word “decades” to show this trend is not new. An education is, and has always been, a necessity for a successful future. The article Why College Isn’t (And Shouldn’t Have To Be) For Everyone also says, “A degree from a prestigious...

Mike Rose is a professor, an author, and is on the faculty of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies as well is the author of “My View: Should everyone go to college?” Mike Rose’s response to the debate is that college is worth the time and money to attend. He wants everyone to at least attend college be it for the associate’s or the bachelor’s degree because a lot of people have found themselves and their true passions from attending. Karen R. Lawrence is president of Sarah Lawrence College and the author of the piece “What value really means in higher education.” Karen R. ...Essay 1 “Should Everyone Go To College?” In this report “Should Everyone Go to College?” written by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, a senior research assistant in the center of children and a senior fellow in Economic studies and co-director of the center on children, spoke about how has been absurdly overrated. Owen and Sawhill reported in the first paragraph of the summary saying “By telling all young people that they should go to college no matter what, we are actually doing some of them a disservice” Their prove in the report is known to be 100% accurate because this proves were gotten from reliable sources like March CPS 2007-2010, Hess et al and some other reliable sources. The rate of return on education can be calculated by discovering the cost and benefit associated with a certain level of schooling, this cost will be made up of the cost of textbooks and stationery, salaries of all the staffs, cost of time and study, rent of land on which the institution is cited and some other expenses. The cost of education is very high so there is not much net benefit. In other words the higher the tuition of college education the lower the net benefit of attending. Owen and Sawhill's report says that “the correlation is not causation, and getting at the true causal effect of...

...believe that in order to be successful you must have a college degree. While a college education has affected our great American culture and economy, the idea that college is the “right” and “responsible” decision for those who are pursuing the American dream is outdated and borderline dangerous. Today, many opportunities are given to everyone to receive higher educations. But this does not mean that everyone should attend a four year college. Everyone was not created equally in their educational abilities, everyone should not be pressured to attend a four year college but should be encouraged to go to a community college, vocational school, or job experience instead of being looked down upon in...

...Going to college is one of the gateways to a better life. However, the tuition for college is immensely higher than the average American's income. This leads many to not go after their dreams. On the other hand, the young adults that do go to college end up in an enormous amount of debt. Bernie Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, advocates that colleges should be free for everyone. This would theoretically push a lot of young adults into going to college. Although this proposal sounds perfect there are some hindrances to this. Hence, why lawmakers should not make college free of charge since there is not enough money to fund this and there are ways in which the government can help young adults into college. To begin with, the legislators shouldn’t make college tuition free because the government cannot afford the amount of money it would cost. America spends a lot of money on many goods, military and other things; that making college free is not an option. The government in its current state is in debt, and this proposal would push America into a bigger amount of debt. The proposal would “cost the...
