It’s meant to connect people closer together, but it technology actually making us lonelier? Technology is a big tool used throughout the world by man people. Brought upon to make people connect to each other; technology is really distancing people away from things. Technology is distancing people away, making people feel lonely, and interrupting the way people connect with others. Technology is constantly been distancing people away. In Alone in the Crowd Mr. Price states “Young men talk about how only a few years ago, their dads used to watch Sunday sports with them and during the station breaks or between plays, they used to chat. Now their fathers are too often checking their email during games. The young men I interview sometimes call it “the BlackBerry zone” when they speak of their fathers’ unavailability.” This goes to show that young men were used to interacting with their fathers’ during the Sunday sports but since technology is frequently being used their “fathers’” don’t have the availability to be hold attention to their sons. Margie Warrell states in Text or Talk “ more people feel more alone than ever. Surprisingly, those who report feeling most alone, are those you’d expect it from least: young people under 35 who are the most prolific social networkers of all. [...] , more and more people find themselves feeling distant and never touching. Or at least not enough to avoid us feeling increasingly alone. [...] But whether loneliness leads people to the Internet, or the internet to loneliness, it seems that many of us turn to the internet to avoid simply being with ourselves.[...] until we learn how to be okay with solitude, we are not going to be able to connect deeply with others” People who we are least expecting to be lonely are alone. What people on the internet are doing is just finding another way to lose contact with people and make themselves more

Personal Narrative Analysis

...home in rural Missouri is where I had my first experience with technology. My older brother Josh had received his first Playstation. Whether it was televisions, computers, or gaming consoles, I grew up in a family where technology has always been present. While it took me many years to experience technology as I do now, some of my earliest memories were of me being fascinated by simply watching my brothers play games. This led to me wanting to experience technology for myself. I have four older siblings. My two oldest siblings, Chris and Shelly, were out of the house years before I was born. I grew up with my two youngest brothers Josh and Nate. They were always very close and it seemed like I was the one who was always left out. It didn’t particularly bother me since I was always very interested in just watching the two of them. It wasn’t until many years after my brothers got their own video game consoles that I was able to experience video games for myself. Among all my siblings, Josh has had the most experience with video games. He has owned an Atari, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and an Xbox One. My youngest brother...

How Does Technology Help Sacrifice In America?

...Did you know that 48% of Americans now only have one other person to confide in? If you compare that to a study done 25 years ago, at that time Americans’ claimed they had three other people to confide in. As a society, Americans have surely changed since technology has become a large part of our lifestyle. Many Americans believe that technology is bringing us closer to one another, although I believe the technology is driving a wedge between us because technology has come up with artificial ways to fill the void for intimacy, and since we are able to easily access social networking, it neglects the relationships around us. I would like you to think of a time when you were walking past a stranger and you go to smile or just simply make eye contact with them, only to see them looking down at their cell phone. I bet that left you either annoyed or embarrassed, which can deter you to not to even care about the next stranger you encounter. The culprit in this scenario would be technology, because it artificially fills the void that humans naturally crave. Products such as cell phones, video games, social networking, and television have become a massive part of people’s lifestyle. It is genuinely easy to be fixated on what’s happening on Facebook, or who can I beat on this video game? Either way you’re not...

Social Media and the Internet

...Name Instructor Course Date Social Media and the Internet: Does it Help or Hinder? Human beings demonstrate a desire to interact and share their experiences with others. With the development of social media and the Internet, such interactions are rapidly shifting. Evidently, it is rare to meet a person who does not use this form of media to communicate with others. It follows that social media and the Internet have become an integral component of the life of an ordinary human being (Tardanico). For instance, Facebook alone has more than 500 million users globally. For the other sites, such Twitter and Myspace, the cumulative number of interactions per minutes is millions. However, the only legitimate means of connection between people is through the authentic communication. Studies reveal that only 7% of communication is reliant on the verbal and written word. The other portion of it is dependent on nonverbal body language (Werbach). This paper evaluates various sources to determine how developments in social media and the Internet have increased the level of human interaction at the expense of effective face-to-face communication. One Saturday evening, Annalise exchanged instant messages with her son who is a college student. They ‘chatted’ quite a lot, Annalise asking about his well-being and her son replying with positive statements followed by emoticons: hearts and smiles. That same evening, her son was arrested for DUI. A few hours later, it was discovered...

Negative Effects of Social Networking

...Negative Effects of Social Networking Shelly Miner Western Governors University WGU Student #000246417 Negative Effects of Social Networking Social Networking or Social Media Websites (Social Networking) allow users to quickly share information and create online connections with other users. Despite the benefits, social networking can negatively effect us socially and can lead to undeveloped social skills and social alienation. Our intimate relationships can be negatively effected because social networking users can quickly find and communicate discreetly with others which can potentially lead to infidelity. Information posted on social networking sites can also have negative effects on current or potential employment opportunities. Social networks are intended to share information with everyone; this lack of protection can increase security risks such as identity theft, cyberbullying and computer viruses. Although each of these social networking sites offers attractive incentives and overwhelming popularity, research indicates that social networking can actually be detrimental because it has negative effects on social skills, relationships, employment, and security. Since their creation, social networking are rapidly changing the way we communicate, discover and share information and has become a crucial part of not only our personal lives but our professional lives. Social networking can be seen almost everywhere we go from retail stores...
