Through Year of Wonders, we are presented with a range of evidence that provide us themes of knowledge, ignorance and isolation. “Sam’s world was a dark, damp maze of rakes and scrins thirty feet under the ground… his whole life was confined by these things”. The plague in which many people died from, was a major factor of isolation throughout the village in the novel. It forced many villagers living in Eyam to flee the town in order of survival. Anna Frith shows great knowledge throughout the novel as she shows readers her independence as she guides Elinor Mompellion and many others to natural remedies against the plague. “When she discovered that I hunged to learn, she commenced to shovel knowledge my way…”. Finally, ignorance is present
