“Sofia and Dawin didn’t have to help; no, they got to sit sweetly on the sofa and take questions while I served platter after platter of sandwiches” (Pg. 26) This expresses the theme of isolation because Miramar is being treated as a maid while her younger siblings are experiencing fame with all the interviews. She feels left out and isolated that she did not mysteriously get any talent after Ba died. Miramar tries to overcome this isolation by pretending to have a good time during the interview.
“Wherever I went, to the mall, to the grocery store, or to the front of the house to water the lawn, everyone wanted to know about Sofia and Darwin” (Pg. 28) This captures the feeling of isolation because everywhere Miramar went, people would only ask about Sofia and Darwin about their…show more content… No, I would reply, embarrassed and take that as a cue to slip away” (Pg. 28) She feels embarrassed that she does not have any talents but her siblings were fortunate enough to mysteriously develop these gifts. This impacts her mental emotions as she starts to change her feelings towards her siblings.
“Once again, I faded into the background, something I was used to doing in the outside would, but never had to do in the world of Woo” (Pg. 29) This shows isolation because Miramar feels that she has been disappeared and left out of society. She overcomes this feeling by going to university, meeting new people and becoming more independent.
“I could barely look at Sofia and Darwin because I thought I might scream or hit what I imagined as smugness off their faces” (Pg. 30) The experience of isolation for Miramar affected her relationship with her siblings. She now feels jealous, demanding and violent towards her siblings and their gifts.
