Pink Floyd’s album The Wall explores the protagonist’s feelings of abandonment and isolation through music. The Wall is a “rock opera” – a rock album that uses music and lyrics to present the story of the character Pink. A rock opera differs from a rock album by presenting a narrative “arc” across its songs and lyrics (Rock). The Wall is about isolation as a theme, abandonment, and the creation and destruction of the wall. Pink has been hiding himself from society his whole life, creating abandonment from his family, educational system, and society. Since Pink has hidden himself he falls deep into a depression that only he can get himself out of.
The title symbolizes Pink’s isolating himself from the world. In response to, or as a defense
