Today we live in a globalized world. What exactly does that mean though? Globalization is a term that refers to processes of international integration coming from the exchanging of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture. Since the sixteenth century until now we have taken huge steps towards being more globalized as human beings with advances in transportation, telecommunications, technology, and infrastructure (Source 2).
Globalization in the 16th to 19th centuries started out being dominated by a select few countries in Europe who had enough advances in their transportation with ships to travel across the oceans. First off, globalization just started with being able to exchange items such as crops, goods, animals, and ideas (source 1). For example in Southern Africa, the crop “Maize” arrived in the late 1600s and had a huge impact on society and the way of life by becoming a huge part of the of the African diet. Then it was mainly used as a crop for food and to feed livestock. Later on people began to figure out more uses for maze such as for pottery and inscribing (pg. 32, source 2). Globalization changed from the 16th to the 19th century by being bigger and on a wider scale. During this time period the industrial revolution occured and machines were in high demand which cause a demand for more metal part, which caused the need for more trade between companies. Modern cities came about and railway construction was huge in speedy travel. Starting in the 20th century, globalization has become even more rapid. This time period is the information age. Now we have the internet, cell phones, and airplanes all which make globalization more complete than before.
Globalization has overall been terrible for the environment here on earth. The better communication has become, the easier we are able to spread our ideas and technological advancements to people across the globe. The more our technologic advancement and ideas spread, the better health care and living conditions will be. The better living conditions are, the more likely we are to have massive population growth. The more people there are that live on this planet, the more people we have to feed/clothe/house. With globalization comes the environmental problems that come from having a large and ever increasing population such as air pollution from industries/manufacturing, burning fossil fuels, and household/farming chemicals. Air pollution is just the beginning though. More environmental problems from globalization include water contamination (both fresh-water and the oceans), over-fishing of the ocean, and climate change.
Although the negative effects on the environment from globalization are very clear, there is actually a positive side in that globalization increases awareness and multinational corporations research into eco-friendly technology.
Understanding the long-term course of history can help us to make decisions today because we can use our knowledge to collect data on any previous situations that relates to the decisions we are trying to make today to make very educated and informed decisions.

...Alternatives to Incarceration Abstract Our country continues to search alternatives to the overcrowded prisons bulging at the seams. Citizens are crying for a relief on taxation in funding these prisons. The criminal justice system has searched for years for ideas to limit incarceration. Some alternative programs have withstood the test of time, some continue to build a name for themselves, and others have just come onto the scene. This paper will focus on three alternative programs to placing adults in prisons. These programs include military services, intensive supervision programs (ISP’s), and Restorative Justice programs. Each provides some type of benefit to criminals, corrections department, and society. Alternatives to Incarceration Our country seems to have gone in various directions trying to find a successful justice system to work in punishing crimes. We went from a rehabilitation system, to no tolerance policies in the 1980’s. Overcrowded prisons forced officials to let prisoners out early in the 90’s. Taxpayers wanted something done with crime in their communities, but didn’t know which way to turn. A faulty criminal justice system has been blamed in such that it had, “Inadequate or ineffective rehabilitation programs, lack of drug treatment, insufficient funding for resettlement after prison, and other . . . policies. . . .”, (Sherman & Strang, 2007, p. 12). Crimes continue to be a major concern within American society, yet our only response...

...1. What is the main purpose of the GATS? back to top The creation of the GATS was one of the landmark achievements of the Uruguay Round, whose results entered into force in January 1995. The GATS was inspired by essentially the same objectives as its counterpart in merchandise trade, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT): creating a credible and reliable system of international trade rules; ensuring fair and equitable treatment of all participants (principle of non-discrimination); stimulating economic activity through guaranteed policy bindings; and promoting trade and development through progressive liberalization. While services currently account for over 60 percent of global production and employment, they represent no more than 20 per cent of total trade (BOP basis). This — seemingly modest — share should not be underestimated, however. Many services, which have long been considered genuine domestic activities, have increasingly become internationally mobile. This trend is likely to continue, owing to the introduction of new transmission technologies (e.g. electronic banking, tele-health or tele-education services), the opening up in many countries of long-entrenched monopolies (e.g. voice telephony and postal services), and regulatory reforms in hitherto tightly regulated sectors such as transport. Combined with changing consumer preferences, such technical and regulatory innovations have enhanced the “tradability” of services and, thus, created a need for...

Personal Narrative: If You Give A Suitor A Cookie

...9th grade English rules. My very first piece, “If You Give a Suitor a Cookie”, was an analytical 8-point paper about The Odyssey, and it was quite literally the worst paper I have ever written. It was so terrible, that I couldn’t even make it through the first paragraph, when I attempted to re-read it. I remembered my writing not being horrible, because, otherwise, I wouldn’t have turned it in. As I recall, it was so bad, that you didn’t even grade it, because I would’ve gotten an F (thank you about that, by the way). This paper exemplifies the very beginning of my career as a high school writer, and through re-reading...

Books Will Always Exist

...Our homes are full of books of every genre. There are only few people who don't like reading. Accordingly, even the most lazy can't help but keeping on reading if the story is enough engaging. The most of times in our homes we find physical books, rather than digital stories. I think there is a reason for this. What is better than the smell of paper, especially when you buy a new book? It is something inimitable, that never will be replaced. Concerning to this, we cannot not talk about the smell of old books. It reminds you something ancient, of another epoch or of a parallel world. Something beset by an aura of fantastic. On the one hand, I think many people prefer to buy new books, rather than borrow them in library, due to the characteristic smell of brand new printed paper. However, the smell of ancient books cannot be recreated and that’s why, on the other hand, library are so full of requests. There are those who neither care to have their own literary works, nor library books. Actually, they don’t want physical volumes and prefer to have all they would want to read always with them. In other words, they like digital readings. For instance, a tablet make this real. This means you can choose among a great number of possibilities the book you want to read in that particular moment. The advantage consists in the fact that you have not to bring ten different volumes with you, but just one light tablet. Your back will thank you! Likewise, many people prefer digital books...

Personal Narrative: My First Paper

...My first paper was a little rocky. At first I could not settle with a topic. When I would start to write a paper I would think it was not good enough and change it to something else. I changed my paper three different times. It was just hard for me to get started and it was also hard narrowing down my topic because I felt like what I was talking about was so broad. Turns out when I finally picked my topic my paper was headed in all the wrong directions. I ended up having to change a lot of things. When I went to Professor Warfield’s office hours it did help me but I was still a little discouraged that I would never get my paper right. I am still trying to keep a positive mind frame and I am hoping for the best with my grade. Overall I learned...

...writing the introduction to the paper. Next, I do the actual writing of the paper and describe each topic in more detail. The last step is to, I revise it in case of any errors. I also revise it to make it better. Each step is important in order to make my writing good. I will discuss in depth and detail about each part of my writing process. As soon as I get the topic and know what I am to write about, I think to myself of some of the ideas that I have that could relate to this piece of writing. Often times, I come up with a story in my own life that can relate or something that I know of that can influence my paper to have more meaning, not only to the reader, but also to me. It will make writing the paper easier if you can make a connection to the topic and relate it to yourself somehow. If I don’t really have a way to connect it I just brainstorm for things or ideas that can be included or used in the piece. I make a list of things pertaining to the paper so I can go through the list easier. If it is a really detailed piece, I sometimes use the web process. If it is necessary to the paper, I will research the topic and try to gather more information about it. If not, I just stick to the list or web. Each one of my idea gathering processes has its benefits and is used depending on the type of paper I need to write. At this point, I would now have all of my ideas and my “helpers” in writing my paper. I would start with the introduction of my paper. In a few paragraphs, I would...
