...My Self Evaluation I am writing this paper as a self-evaluation of myself as a writer and my growth in writing as a college student. College is something many people try to tackle in their lifetime and also a fear many people never tackle during their life. At eighteen years old I was one of those people fearful to become a college student and because of that I did not attend college until I was twenty one years old. When attending my first semester of college I thought that the English class I attended that semester would be the only English class I would have to attend throughout my college experience and the only form of writing I would have to tackle. Little did I know that it was only the beginning of my journey with writing? When starting English 102 I was very nervous not only knowing that there would be an extremely long and time consuming paper involved but also the numerous comments I’ve heard about how hard the class truly is. One of those comments being that the national average drop rate for the course was a 60%. During my first night in class we were informed that our first paper would be a website evaluation. I was frightened just starting...

...Research Problem: The current trend in the educational sector shows a decline in the number of enrollment of the students at higher level of education at colleges over the globe. There could be many reasons behind this inclination but among the major causes, the increasing cost of higher education is the most important one. Hypothesis: “The high admission cost and tuition fee have turned away potential college students leading to a decrease in number of enrollments in higher educational level.” Introduction: In the contemporary world, college degree has become indispensable credential to survive in the workforce. But with soaring costs of higher education not every potential student has been able to afford the luxury of being a graduate. Over half of college students have shown concern regarding the payment of their college fee. This is the highest this number has been since 1971 (Marill and O’Leary 64-66, 93). Also the increasing trend of unemployment over the entire globe has helped in tightening the terms and conditions for college student debt. Although the financial aids have helped the students a lot in pursuing their desired professions but still this number is much smaller than the number of students affected by the high education cost. Although the decreasing number of entries in colleges can mainly be attributed to high cost of education, but there are many other factors which play important role in the current decreasing trend. Whatever the reason may be...

...How Affirmative Action Ban Affect College Admission? Abstract: In this research paper I examined the effects of affirmative action ban on the university enrollment stage. The importance of this topic is that it is very contentious social issue today. In this paper I mentioned some of the experiences of African American activist Ward Connerly, examples of his movement and his opponent approach towards affirmative action. The research finds that affirmative action bans decrease the enrollment in selective universities. However, affirmative action debate will continue in the United States. From research discussions I find that affirmative action carries out emotional reaction, because the concern is the inequality in education. However throughout the research I found some confusions and mixed proofs for that concern. Affirmative action in college admission is one of today’s most argumentative social policy issues. The supporters of affirmative action view it as a just response to past or present discrimination, stress the social benefits of producing minority role models and leaders, and claim that there are educational benefits to diversity. At the same time its opponents contend that it is an impediment to achieving a race-blind society and may even be harmful to those it is intended to directly benefit. The issue has been in headlines as affirmative action in college admissions has been limited in recent years by court decisions...

For several decades, researchers have documented the gap between high school and college expectations, noting that even students who complete a college preparatory curriculum in high school are often poorly prepared for college. This lack of alignment contributes to high postsecondary remediation rates and hinders college completion. Over the years, state policymakers and education leaders have responded with a variety of wide-ranging and costly efforts, including the development of state-level content standards and assessments. However, these standards vary widely among states and generally lack sufficient rigor to assure readiness for credit bearing courses in college. It is encouraging that states have adopted the English Language Arts and...

...Affirmative Action College Admissions 2 Abstract Affirmative action has been a strong subject of discussion and debate for more than 30 years. Its use in college admissions has even been heard and ruled by the U.S. Supreme Court. Affirmative action is in essence, a policy or procedure developed by numerous institutions of higher learning to attempt to diversify their student bodies racially and by ethnicity. Looking closer at this procedure will display the advantages and disadvantages of affirmative action and college admissions. Affirmative Action College Admissions 3 Affirmative action is the practice, usually by institutions, of giving preference to racial minorities or women when hiring employees, giving awards, or deciding whom to admit (So you Wanna, 2003). Affirmative action arose out of a desire to bring minority groups into institutions and professions that had traditionally been dominated by white males. It first appeared after the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s as an attempt to accompany the new legal equality gained for minorities with social and economic equality. This paper I will discuss the history, advantages and disadvantages of affirmative action in college admissions. After explaining these issues I will state and my belief on the issue of affirmative action in college admissions. In 1961, President Kennedy signed Executive Order No. 10925, putting the term “affirmative action” its first use in relation to civil rights...

...sounded like they'd be useful when writing a paper on the topic. The first two that I chose to visit were findarticles.com and wiki.answers.com. Wiki.answers.com literally gave a one sentence definition of what is believed to be academic dishonesty. Findarticles.com gave a short and simple description on academic dishonesty in online courses and provided a few links to articles about academic dishonesty. Those articles gave very little information on plagiarism and other terms defining academic dishonesty. One of the articles only informed a person about using correct citations in a paper and it was only six to eight sentences long. As with google.com, ask.com provided many links to many different colleges and academic institutions. I'm looking for academic integrity, not links to colleges, or links to different colleges' guidelines on their ideas on academic integrity (although they could somewhat prove to be useful). One thing that I was hoping for were statistics (real case studies) on academic dishonesty in higher learning. I did a search using ask.com for statistics on academic dishonesty. A lot of data was found, but it's accuracy is undetermined for most of the websites provided. Within a library or an academic online library, I know that the information provided is going to be from professionals and individuals who are evaluated by their peers in the same profession. I will be able to find published articles, papers, and books with guaranteed...
