...There are many issues facing law enforcement ranging from monetary issues all the way to the lack of respect from citizens. When budget cuts are announced due to many factors like the declining economy, many different public areas take a hit. However, when a police officer who is already not making a large salary and has a family to support feels the pinch, it adds additional stress to an already stressful job. When economic conditions are less than favorable, crime is normally on the rise. Citizens within the jurisdictions also play a large factor. Normally, they are expecting a quick turn around and with some incidents; this may not be the case. Overworked and underpaid yet highly trained officers need to find a balance so that most of the citizens can be satisfied. The Department of Homeland Security was created following the attacks of 9/11. The majority of these officers were employed to avoid future attacks from terrorists outside as well as with the US. While these employees have gone through some training, many are not as properly trained as most police officers. Thus allowing some criminals to slip through the cracks and later becoming the responsibility of officers (local, state and federal). Understanding that there may not be a quick way to remedy this ongoing issue, two ideas that may be of some help would be redirecting funding to the areas of concern. The integrity of the US’s safety should never be compromised by removing funds to other nonessential programs...

...historically on policing, not only has law enforcement made incredible changes, but through these changes came the issue of conflict that arose in our society. The conflict could be that of law enforcement itself, different ethnic groups or social classes. As law enforcement progressed, so did the conflict among African Americans and law enforcement officials. The greatest argument to date in our society are those of the African American race. When a crime has been committed the first suspect in the case is an African American male whether there are other suspects or not. Another argument could be the socioeconomic class. An example of this may be if one were to come from a less than prosperous background, not only will they be arrested, but they will be tried and convicted due to the simple fact that they don’t have the resources to afford a decent attorney. Then there are those that are born into wealthy families and if they are arrested for a crime, they will never do any jail or prison time due to the fact that they do have the resources to have the best attorney or even an entire defense team. As hard as it is to believe we would like to think this doesn’t exist in our society, but if you were to ask anyone and the answer you are given may just surprise you. The sole objective in this paper is to not only describe the historical development of policing in the United States, but also how this is related to current relationships between law enforcement and those of different ethnic...

...not only examine current law enforcement issues, but also the past issues as well. The reason for this is to examine the strides law enforcement has made in fighting criminal activity and advances in technology that have a direct bearing on the future. Police agencies normally have numerous functions, but are based on Sir Robert Peel’s (1788-1850) “Peelian Principles” which are normally seen as the basic foundation for current law enforcement organizations and community policing throughout the world, (Nazemi, 2009). The founder of the first metropolitan police, Peel inadvertently founded the standard for modern policing. Although each of these principles was created in the 1800’s, they still hold very true today: 1. “The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.” 2. “The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions.” 3. “Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.” 4. “The degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.” 5. “Police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to the public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.” 6. “Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only...

...Law Enforcement Today Steven Camp CJS/200 Apr 26, 2015 Keith MC Ininch Law Enforcement Today Policing today’s American society has become more than just capturing the criminals. The daily tasks of law enforcement on local, state, and federal levels are challenging for these agencies. Law enforcement today must cope with issues, maintain and improve interaction amongst the upper and lower levels of the agencies, and look for ways to improve upon those relationships, all in an effort to protect and serve. Law enforcement agencies, more particular, the officers who work in those agencies, are constantly faced with issues of trust and integrity (Schmalleger, 2001). The dangers associated with being a law enforcement agent are inherent to the job itself. Officers are subject to violence of the offenders, health hazards at crime scenes, and the dangers of vehicular traffic among other dangers. Schmalleger presents that 134 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2008 (pp. 276). Issues of racial and biased profiling also present problems for law enforcement. It is important for officers to maintain a balance of justice and to treat all citizens equally. This becomes an issue many times when the crime occurs and the victim of said crime was a member of a minority group. If the victim were black in a predominantly white community, the police may find themselves looked at as not doing all they can to find the criminal. On the other side of that, if the criminal...

...Police and Law Enforcement Criminal Justice System Police officers serve an important function in society; they protect the property and lives of the people they serve. Police officers pursue and apprehend people who break the law and then cite or arrest those people. Police officers on all levels, local, state, or federal enforce laws ensure the safety of citizens. In the course of their jobs law enforcement personnel deal with a wide range of issues, laws, and restrictions. One of the most basic concepts that affect a police officer’s performance of his or her duties is probable cause (Vila & Morris, 1999). According to American Bar Association (2011), " Probable cause is defined as facts sufficient to support a reasonable belief that criminal activity is probably taking place or knowledge of circumstances indicating a fair probability that evidence of crime will be found. It requires more than a mere "hunch," but less than proof beyond a reasonable doubt.” (What is probable cause?, para. 1). Before a warrant, such as an arrest or search warrant, can be issued law enforcement officers must demonstrate probable cause in the form of a written document. This document must be submitted to a magistrate (low level judge) who is responsible for ensuring probable cause standards are met in order for a warrant to be issued. Once the magistrate is satisfied and the warrant is issued...

...Law Enforcement Recruiting | John Skiba CRJS101 | Ebony Johnson 5/4/14 | In dealing with the issues of Law Enforcement Recruiting, we must address moral, financial, and social influences that affect our overall goal of obtaining the very best candidates. Understanding that these candidates must be able to demonstrate a standard of ethical and moral integrity because of the authority in which they are given. We must believe that person is trustworthy and know that the trust that is bestowed upon them by the people they serve will not be betrayed. The ability to put one’s personal views aside and focus in on what is right and lawful is a character trait rooted at the center of integrity. I define integrity as the person you are when no one else is around and watching. Will you hold to your moral standard? Or will you circum to the desire to do what you can get away with? Integrity also takes courage. Do you have the inner strength to stand for what’s right regardless of the outcome or the perception of your peers, family and friends? These issues are never absolute. No one can guarantee the actions and mind of another. No one can go into the future and be sure that mistakes won’t be made. So then, how should we recruit? With current law enforcement agents falling short every day, are we to look just for the brightest minds? Or recruits with strongest physical attributes? We must come up with a standard belief system. We must develop a standard that is based deeper than right...

...Local Law Enforcement Intelligence The world of local law enforcement intelligence has changed significantly since September 11, 2001. State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies have been given a variety of new responsibilities to handle including intelligence as just one. The intelligence discipline has evolved significantly in recent years since 9/11. As these various trends have merged, increasing numbers of American law enforcement agencies have begun to explore, and sometimes embrace, the intelligence function. Law enforcement agencies should consider many new techniques in bettering their intelligence functions. This research paper will discuss law enforcement intelligence history, methods to integrate intelligence into their agency and resources to help with their departments function. To begin this research the first question to be asked should be that of what is law enforcement intelligence? “Law enforcement intelligence is the product of an analytical process that provides an integrated perspective to disparate information about crime, crime trends, crime and security threats and conditions associated with criminality” (Carter). In my opinion the term “law enforcement intelligence” is used and viewed improperly. The majority of people will take this term out of its context and confuse it with national intelligence. Law enforcement intelligence is often viewed as pieces of information about people, places, or events that can be used to provide insight about...

...Sheriff Date: 08/17/2013 Subject: Proposal to Improve Interpersonal Communications Within Law Enforcement Attached is my proposal to improve interpersonal communication within the Sheriffs’ Office. It focuses on the concepts that are used to train law enforcement agencies in the skill of interpersonal communication within the department and in public. Good communication skills are absolutely essential within law enforcement and many of the problems that law enforcement officers confront are solved through effective communication. REASON FOR PROPOSAL There are several important reasons why this research will be beneficial to the sheriffs’ office and the local law enforcement agencies we provide radio service and interact with on a daily basis. First and foremost is officer, dispatch, and jailers safety. The communication problems with in the sheriffs’ office have caused major safety issues in the past between officers, jailers, and dispatchers. Most of the issues have been caused by poor communication skills or lack of knowledge in using good communication skills. This proposal will point out the key issues that need to be addressed and the solutions to correct them. I look forward to meeting with you and Sheriff Geries in working on ways to promote better communication skills within the department. 0 IMPROVE INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS WITHIN LAW ENFORCEMENT Prepared for Sheriff Randy Geries Parmer County Sheriffs’ Office Prepared by Princilee...
