...(2001) 263 ± 275 The behaviour of international firms in socio-political environments in the European Union Amjad Hadjikhania, Pervez N. Ghaurib,* b Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden Faculty of Management and Organisation, University of Groningen, Landleven 5, 9700 AV Groningen, Netherlands Received 1 March 1998 a Abstract Most of the earlier studies on international business ignore the influence of the political actors and the environment on the internationalisation of the firm. The focus of this study is on the interaction between business and political actors and the main question deals with how firms standing in different stages of their internationalisation manage their relationships with political actors. By using network theory, the study presents a conceptual framework and aims to augment the knowledge on the internationalisation of the firms' political activities. The variety in management actions are discussed by the two variables of influence and adaptation, which have become connected to the two fundamental variables in internationalisation of the firms, namely commitment and knowledge. By comparing the management behaviour of seven small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and three multinationals (MNEs), the study shows how smaller exporting firms vs. MNEs manage their relationships with political actors. The outcome of the analysis contains results elevating general aspects on the political behaviour of the firms in the European market. D 2001 Elsevier...

...company who believes that; ‘the idea of wealth in the ground anywhere in the world belonging to all citizens is a bit mushy for hardnosed business men’? In this dilemma a legitimate source of governance is required, however the challenge we face in legitimacy is ‘the participation of civil society in some fashion as well as the state’. This factor measures whether non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) can function within the global community and more importantly to this proposal, whether those NGO’s active in Zambia can be held accountable for the rights of workers in the country’s copper mining industry. Human rights watch recorded the plea of a drill operator ‘who would just have to do [his] job no matter how unsafe’ or threats of sacking would be fulfilled. Other cases have ‘been documented of apparent collusion between MNE’s and host governments in major violations of human rights’, this supports the claim of a widespread conception that accountability automatically equates to blame. However this proposal seeks to dig deeper than label fault on them. Firstly, its aim is to consider the challenge NGO’s, privatisation, the...

...Proposal 2: Social Media and Infectious Disease There are multiple uses of social media in infectious disease surveillance. Salathé et al. (2013) discussed the benefits of digital epidemiology which included 1) early detection of disease outbreaks, 2) monitoring disease levels real-time through news media, E-mail, blogs, social media networks, and “vigilant journalists” using Twitter to communicate incidence of disease, 3) automated systems that filter key words pulled from the social media mentioned above, and 4) examine periods of time before outbreaks occur. As reported by Voss (2013) from an interview with Salathé, digital epidemiology compliments traditional methods, enhances transparency, and provides public health officials a more thorough picture of outbreaks. Salathé et al. (2013) discussed the difficulties of using only symptomatic surveillance when detecting Avian Influenza A H7N9 in asymptomatic birds and the benefit to supplementing traditional surveillance with digital epidemiology. Beyond detecting symptoms, the limited number of public health officials collecting data and assessing the potential for a pandemic poses challenges in communicating data rapidly (Salathé et al., 2013). There is a challenge in keeping the public engaged as the initial interest to a potential outbreak diminishes. When there is a decreased amount of information being shared over social media there is also a possible risk that new infections could be ignored (Salathé et al., 2013)...

...from a traditionally liberal community. In Streetwise, the migration of yuppies as a result of gentrification, and the movement of nearby-ghetto blacks into these urban renewal sites also invoke fear of crime and neighborhood devaluation among the gentrifying community. Not only is migration a common thread, but the persistence of poverty, despite the current economic boom, is the cornerstone of all these works. Poverty, complicated by the dynamics of race in America, call for universalistic policy strategies, some of which are articulated in Poor Support and The War Against the Poor. In When Work Disappears, William Julius Wilson builds upon many of the insights he introduced in The Truly Disadvantaged, such as the rampant joblessness, social isolation, and lack of marriageable males that characterized many urban ghetto neighborhoods. In the class discussion, Professor Wilson argues that it is necessary to disassociate unemployment with joblessness, as the former only measures those still seeking jobs while the latter encompasses those who may have dropped out of the labor market. Also, by focusing on neighborhood-level poverty, he highlights...

...Joe Bailey ITS-2120 Network Security Proposal Introduction Fixem Orthopedic Therapy is a physical therapy facility that treats people who are recovering from various musculoskeletal surgeries. The company is based in Southern Maryland and consists of three separate offices: one in Brandywine, one in Indian Head, and an office that was recently built in Waldorf. These offices connect to each other through WAN links, and they are also capable of connecting to local doctors’ offices which allows patient records to be easily sent from a patient’s doctor to the facility that needs them. Fixem Orthopedic must ensure that only authorized individuals, mainly the receptionists and physical therapists, can have access to these sensitive records. These files contain information that malicious people can take advantage of such as Social Security numbers and credit card and billing information. The lack of a proper security policy can result in severe penalties for Fixem Orthopedic under the HIPAA Security Rule (“HIPAA Security Rule”). Measures must also be taken to protect the network from malware, including worms and viruses. These are very serious security threats that can slow or bring down the network as well as pose a threat to data stored on the computers. Finally, the employees can pose a risk to the network’s security if they have not been properly trained to handle social engineering tactics. Improvement The security of this business’s network is vital to its continued operation...
