“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right.”
~~~Ralph Waldo Emerson Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines courage as, “the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous.” Courage is the motivator that allows a person to step outside of a comfort zone and persist forward with an idea. Courage provides the enthusiasm to grab onto the idea and see that idea through to completion. A person is capable of being persistent and enthusiastic about an idea or a concept; but without courage, setbacks or negativity can cause the persistence and enthusiasm to wane.
In the video “Manal al-Sharif: A Saudi woman who dared to drive,” from http://www.ted.com/talks/manal_al_sharif_a_saudi_woman_who_dared_to_drive.html, there is a story of courage. In American society, it has been almost a century since the end of the Women’s Right Movement. While women may still face issues within the society, they have the ability to face those issues without the ridicules once imposed prior to the movement. In Manal al-Sharif’s video, the story portrays a whole different societal view.
In Memphis, TN there is a law that is still on the books to date. This law states that whenever a woman is driving a vehicle, a man must be in front of that vehicle waving a red flag to indicate/warn other motorists of a female driver on the road. This law is obviously not in force and being enforced shown by the number of female drivers seen on a daily basis. In al-Sharif’s situation, there were no laws in place in regards to female drivers. She faced a ban instilled by societal and religious impositions. But yet, she wanted to drive.
So she drove. The result? Manal al-Sharif was arrested and incarcerated for nine (9) days. This did not stop her desire to drive. Despite being faced with public ridicule, al-Sharif became an activist for women to drive. A date was chosen, and a campaign for women to take the wheel on that date began. Enthusiasm and persistence for something she felt strongly about AND was not against the laws in Saudi Arabia were fuel for the courage with which al-Sharif forged ahead.
al-Sharif could have proceeded to move herself and her family to another country where female driving was not an issue. She could have remained complacent about the issue and simply never drove a vehicle again. There were other – easier – options available, yet these were not the options that al-Sharif felt were her course of action.
There are still battles ahead in al-Sharif’s road. Changes have already begun, but the road to maintain those changes is still being paved. Manal al-Sharif could have faced a number of different outcomes in the path that this road has followed, but the courage in her persistence and enthusiasm have led to a pleasant outlook for the future of women drivers in Saudi Arabia.
It Takes Courage
...Two people who I believe have shown extraordinary courage and persistence in their lives are Martin Luther King Jr. and Samwise Gamgee. Of course, one is a real historical figure and the other is a fictitious character from a fantasy classic, but both have overcome extraordinary obstacles and have taken incredible risks to be the historical and literary figures they are today. Martin Luther King Jr. who was both a Baptist minister and a civil rights leader, faced intense challenges and the ever possible threat of death throughout his life. Just given the time period and the fact that everyone knew who he was must have been a struggle on his conscience while coping with every considerable anxiety and fear possible. He did most of his nonviolent activist work in the south which was the heart of segregation and led marches through the streets of major towns and cities. He is known as one of the greatest historical orators and graduated from three different colleges with a B.A., a B.D., and a Ph. D. He headed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for the pursuit of peace and equality through nonviolent activism and went on to expand his pursuits on poverty and the Vietnam War before being assassinated in 1968. Interestingly enough, King originally did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a minister because he felt differently about some of the major ideals of the church at that time and he was known to rebel...
It Takes Courage
...This video is about a woman named, Aimee Mullins who was born without shin bones and how she overcame her disability. She is a model, actor, and an advocate for women and next generation prosthetics. In the video she shows the definition of the word disabled and it shows how society views people with disabilities. She compares the definition of the word from the early 1980s to the definition from 2009. There was very little change between the two definitions from these two time periods. She goes on to talk about how this word, disabled, affects people who live with these every day. The words that come out of these definitions, like useless, mutilated, and etc. mislabel these people in society. When she met the doctor that had delivered her he said that she made a liar out of him by exceeding his expectations because he was the one that had to deliver the bad news that her legs had to be amputated from below the knees. She goes on to say that we enhance ourselves through adversity and that no one should let go of their dreams even though it seems to be an impossible goal. “Adversity isn’t an obstacle that we need to get around in order to resume living our life. It’s part of our life. I think of it like my shadow — sometimes I see a lot of it, sometimes there’s very little, but it’s always with me.” (Aimee Mullins). Only through her persistence she rose above her disabilities to become successful in her career and as an example that people can over many obstacles in their life...
Named Courage Research Paper
...My Inheritance Named Courage “Courageous, brave, strong, outgoing...” and the list goes on and on. I could not describe a single superhero without using one of those words, and at the very top of that list, is courage. It seems almost cliché to use nowadays. For myself, courage became something ordinary. It had this numb meaning, almost as if this rare trait lost its worth when it became a normality. To think that a value that I see now as priceless, could be thought of as common and as easily obtained as a cold. However, it all boils down to meaning. How courage is defined truly sets its own value in someone’s mind. At least, that was what happened with me. Courage finally became more than just a word, it became a perspective, a goal, a standard. To do so, all I had to do was look inside my own home. Who knew that extraordinary people could live such “ordinary” lives? In the end, my parents...
To Kill A Mockingbird Quotes About Courage
...̈He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. ̈ said the professional boxer Muhammad Ali. This quotes means that you have to have to courage to accomplish great things in life. You have to take chances to get where you want to be. Courage takes great strength and motivation. The theme courage was present throughout all the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird. Many characters displayed courage at one point in the story. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout learns about courage from Mrs. Dubose, Atticus and Boo Radley. Mrs. Dubose shows a great deal of courage in this story. She may have been a mean old lady to the children, but she had far more going on in her life than the kids were aware of. She said some mean and nasty things to the children. “And you what are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady! You’ll grown up waiting on tables if somebody doesn’t change your waysa Finch waiting on tables at the O.K. Caféhah!” (Lee 101). She directed this towards scout and towards Scout and Jem’s mother. She was addicted to morphine and was trying to stop her addiction before she died and it caused her to say some rude things. When Jem messed with her yard, she made him read to her every day after school and on Sundays for two...
How Does Courage Affect Your Life
...How does courage affect you in your life? I’m going to tell you how you can use courage in three different ways. First, you half to have the courage to never give in what you want to do. Second, have the courage to keep wanting even if you can’t. Third, to have courage to take responsibility for your actions. Courage is an important element of character. The paragraph I’m going to write may be about country music. Yet, you should get more out of it than just a country song. They told him not much people like the original way of country, so he kept a smile on his face and said ok. Still, that didn’t stop Watson from playing country music. Cool
...Allison Winans Sullivan English 30 9.10.2012 The Understanding of Courage Courage is being able to stand up for what is right, even if that means others will be against you. Everyone has courage that lives inside of them, but not everyone let's it free. Abraham Lincoln was full of courage throughout his whole life. Lincoln went from being illiterate as a child to becoming one of the most revolutionist presidents in history. The one thing that made Lincoln so powerful was that he was filled with determination and courage. Courage is something that we all can acquire if we have a reason to be motivated. Lincoln once said “ It often requires more courage to dare to do right than to fear to do wrong.” and he is completely right. Fears are what will hold you back from actually showing courage when it needs to be shown. First, courage is not something you are born with. Not one person that has shown acts of courage has just woke up one day and been full of courage. Lincoln was illiterate when he was a boy, but with determination he taught himself to read and write. Lincoln was born and raised in a log cabin on his family's farm. Lincoln's father wanted Lincoln to stop reading all the time, but Lincoln did not want to stop his fascination with reading. To settle the dispute Lincoln and his father decided to make a compromise. The compromise between the two was that Lincoln could keep reading, but he had to get his farm work done first. To be able to accomplish this task Lincoln would...
Courage Comparison Essay
...I found the definition of courage has various meanings, and there are three main themes or descriptions that show or prove courage. Mostly it is physical courage, emotional courage, and moral courage. The literature of English 421 taught me that it may take a little or a lot of courage to stand up for yourself in order to reach your goal, and you may find courage you never knew you had. I will describe situations of courage that I think were important in the three novels we read, beginning with the novel displaying the least courageous characters and finishing with the novel displaying the most courageous characters. A Midsummer Night’s Dream It is my opinion this novel did not have the type of characters I would think of as courageous. So, when I was trying to come up with examples of courage from this novel, I thought of Hermia, and the courage she showed when standing up to her parents about Lysander. She loved Lysander, but was supposed to marry Demetrius. There were many conflicts in the novel, mostly about who loved who, and the confusion around why things were happening, not necessarily acts of courage. Hermia stuck to what her heart wanted and that took courage no matter what the Royal parents thought. It takes courage for Hermia to stand up to her father. This is a pretty good example of emotional courage. (Shakespeare, 64) Lord of the Flies Ralph is the main character in Lord of the Flies. He wants to be leader of the boy’s tribe because the boys voted...
Overcoming Fears
...The Courage to Take Action Perhaps the greatest challenge that you will ever face in life is the conquest of fear and the development of the habit of courage. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said , "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," he was saying that the emotion of fear, rather than the reality of what we fear, is the cause of the associated anxiety, stress, and unhappiness. When we develop the habit of courage and unshakable self-confidence, a whole new world of possibilities opens up to us. Just think: What would you dare to dream, be, or do if you were not afraid of anything in the whole world? Fortunately, the habit of courage can be learned, just as any other skill is learned. To do so, we need to go to work systematically to diminish and eradicate our fears, while simultaneously building the kind of courage that will enable us to deal fearlessly with the inevitable ups and downs of life. Syndicated columnist Ann Landers wrote, "If I were asked to give what I considered the single most useful bit of advice for all humanity, it would be this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life, and when it comes, hold your head high. Look it squarely in the eye and say, 'I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.' " This is the kind of attitude that leads to victory. The starting point in overcoming fear and developing courage is to look at the factors that predispose us toward fear. The root source of fear is childhood conditioning that caused us to...
