In Italy, the population is 58 million. More of these people live in the North of Italy. I believe that this is because the industry growth has been very rapid. It is now the 7th richest nation and the industry triangle is the wealthiest region out of the whole country. The industry triangle has become so rich because goods are able to be exported and sold in Germany, France and Great Britain as it is located near. However, the South of Italy is a very poor country. Standard of living must be pretty tough as people live on hilltop town’s rustic areas. The South is not developing as a country and has a little industry so therefore; it will not attract many people. Many people from the South migrate to the North or to other European countries. In the rest of my assessment I will tell you differences and similarities about the north and south of Italy.

The climate in Italy has a big range, from the north to south, and highland to mountain tops. Some days in the north when its winter it can be snowing and -2’C and some occasional rain. The middle region is slightly hotter reaching 12’C and the South is even hotter up to a temperature of 18’C. So therefore, the range is 20’C which is three completely different ways of living. In summer it is quite the opposite, it is not such of a great change of temperature between north and the south of Italy. The North has a high humidity yet some rainy days. This hot weather is coming from Africa and the hot dry wind travels through, making it nice to be around. There is always a cool breeze by the seas and the close mountains, which then turns into thunderstorms. Whereas, the South is typically known for scorching hot weather this makes it good for tourists to spend their holidays.

Floods keep accruing in the North; it makes people homeless by cutting off villages and railways. Obviously some years are not as bad as others, but in the year 2000, it was particularly bad. In the future, the flooding is set out to get worse. This is because of global warming! Many buildings built along the riverbanks and floodplain is at great risk due to extreme weather that will eventually get worse and worse. The rivers Tanaro and Borbone, burst their banks from the bad storm, which caused the upheavals. Volcanoes are an annual thing in southern Italy. There are many active and potentially active volcanoes in the South, and it's a result of a collision of two plates. While the eruption is taking place, some people swim in the sea to get the best view and to keep out of harms way while others will go to a safe place.

The population in the north is growing and growing as many people from the south migrate there. The countries capital, Rome has a current population of 11.5 million. This number is huge and gets bigger every year. This is because it is well developed and has a successful economy. This makes it attractive for people to migrate here, as they no there will be many good jobs. The south is the opposite to the north. The population is getting lower. This is because the standard of living is horrible; it is one of lowest standard of living in the EC. The few towns, which are on the coast, have little industry to attract people. This is why the younger generations of families migrate.

In the south, farming is a main type of land use. Most of them are quite small because a lot of families do it. Furthermore, much of the land is high and steep, so it is hard for them and less room to farm. Farming is at a subsistent level. This is because the food that they grow, they mostly eat so they don't have very much left over to sell. As a result of this, because they make very little money, they cannot afford fertiliser. You would think that every European market would want to buy their delicious fruit and vegetables that they grow, but as they are far away, they have nobody to sell their stock to.

The industry in the north is very wealthy. The growth has been rapid in the past 50 years. This is because, (unlike the south) there are many better-paid and skilled jobs. The north has plenty of flat land available mostly taken up by large factories, but also it is great for large-scale farming. Because land is being built upon, there is less land for agriculture. The south of Italy has never been an important industry region. There is very little money in this area, people with limited skills and a high birth rate, which means there are too many people looking at the few available jobs.

Italy has become very developed as a country. Global companies have set up in Italy. However, the north is more industrial as there is more people living in the region so more global shops. With all these problems that I have mentioned in this essay, the south of Italy is slowly becoming better off. Trees have been planted. Dams, irrigation systems and motorways have been built. Also, the hot summers are attracting tourists to come and visit the beautiful country that people don't give credit for.

South of Italy

Tourists visit both the north and the south of Italy. Tourists visit the north to ski the Alps. They visit the cities to shop at the large fashion houses as well as visit important religious sites and see the region’s museums filled with art history. In the south tourists visit the beaches. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia have large resorts that are very popular with the jet set. Many people visit Italy for the exquisite food and wine. Italian Restaurants are popular in every culture. Whether the traveller wishes to ski, cycle, hike or sightsee, shop and eat; Italy is rich in its culture.

In conclusion, we can say that the north of Italy is richer then the south for a range of human and physical reasons. Climate and distances from the markets are all factors to explain why they are both very different.
